Biography:
Like many great Southern storytellers, singer-songwriter Tyler Childers has fallen in love with a place. The people, landmarks and legendary moments from his childhood home of Lawrence County, Kentucky, populate the 10 songs in his formidable debut, Purgatory, an album that’s simultaneously modern and as ancient as the Appalachian Mountains in which events unfold.
The album, co-produced by Grammy Award winners Sturgill Simpson and David Ferguson, is a semiautobiographical sketch of Childers’ growth from wayward youth to happily married man, told in the tradition of a Southern gothic novel with a classic noir antihero who may just be irredeemable. Purgatory is a chiaroscuro painting with darkness framing light in high relief. There’s catharsis and redemption. Sin and temptation. Murder and deceit. Demons and angels. Moonshine and cocaine. So much moonshine and cocaine. All played out on the large, colorful canvas of Eastern Kentucky.
Childers had been searching for a certain sound for his debut album for years as he honed his craft, and was finding it elusive when his friend, drummer Miles Miller, introduced him to Simpson, the Grammy Award-winning musician and fellow Kentuckian. Childers sent Simpson a group of his songs, then went to visit him in Nashville.
“And he said, ‘There’s this sound. I know what you’re trying to get at, the mountain sound,’” Childers recalled. “’So I asked, ‘What are you doing?’”
Intrigued, Simpson enlisted the aid of Ferguson, the Grammy Award winning sound engineer. They assembled a band that included multi-instrumentalists Stuart Duncan, Michael J. Henderson and Russ Pahl, bassist Michael Bub and Miller on drums, of course, and helped Childers make a debut album of consequence that announces an authentic new voice.
“I was writing an album about being in the mountains,” Childers said. “I wanted it to have that gritty mountain sound. But at the same time, I wanted a more modern version of it that a younger generation can listen to-the people I grew up with, something I’d want to listen to.”

I’m an old school rap head from nyc and never liked country except a few. Johnny cash and Merle haggard and the like. This dude is the real deal, you can feel his voice like cash, cobain, and biggie. Lesson here is to always give someone a shot. Never judge a book by its cover. I thought this would be another pop country boring ass CMA type, I was wrong. Props to this dude.

I've watched several, if not all, of his videos on KZfaq. I swear when that man sings he transcends somewhere and some old spirit just takes over. His eyes are so dark and they are constantly moving about. His presence on stage and the way he stares off, it's like he's living in the moment of the song. He's seeing what you're hearing. His ballads are in a class all to themselves.

Tina Nolan had a man with a good place for siftin'. He invited me diggin', so I picked up my screen, And a shovel to dig and a jar of 'shine, Traded me fair for a bottle of wine - His brother's Barnes Mountain wine. We trudged through the snow, straight up the hillside, Took a ridge for a while, then we slowly went down To an overhang hid from the ridgeline. We bent o'er our handles and we bit in the ground - The dark and bloody ground. It was a bitch to break ground but the wine kept us goin'. The moonshine was flowin', keepin' us warm, 'Cause you can't hold a girl with a fistful of shovel; Gotta find your fire in the comp'ny of corn. We dug for a while, then it all turned to ashes. Found a bunch of broke flint and a few bits of bone. Then I heard Jesse yell o'er the pile he was siftin' - Shook the hills like the angels were callin' us home: "Jesse, Zachary, come home!" It was banded as hell; it was fluted and Clovis; It was hot as the pistol I kept on my side... And I was fiendin' so fierce, I was broke-ass and busted - I pulled out my pistol and I took Jesse's life. A Clovis like that is a hard point to find - Makes pills swift to come by with a good chunk of change Left over for burn on whatever meanness, Whatever woman is comin' my way... Darlin', come my way! I sit in this cell for the banded Clovis I stole off of Nolan when I killed him that day. I reckon the chase of the pills and the powder, Corn liquor and women are the culprits to blame.

100.9 The Creek I'm subbing to you now if I'm not already, thank you!!! Tyler Childers is the best, hands down. I'm over in Norton, Virginia, over the mountain from where he's from. One local radio station I know finally played a song 2 weeks in a row. Terrible quality and slowed down so much it sounded horrible. Pissed me off. We gotta get Tyler more exposure. He'll take off like a rocket when the right person hears him. It's coming though.

There's a lot of bluegrass in his music even when he's playing solo. I believe that's one reason he's catching fire. A lot of us grew up hearing bluegrass and it touches my soul. But a lot of old timers don't like new music polluting its purity.

A friend of mine found two clovis' (plural?) during an arrowhead hunt/dig with his dad. One of his dad's lifelong dreams was to find a clovis, but he never did, and sadly died a few years ago, but he was overjoyed that his son had found even one. I showed my friend this song and he was blown away at how true and awesome it is. Tyler rocks

Tina Nolan had a man with a good place for siftin’ He invited me diggin’, so I picked up my screen And a shovel to dig and a jar of shine He traded me fair for a bottle of wine His brother’s Barnes Mountain wine We trudged through the snow straight up the hillside Took a ridge for a while, then we slowly went down To an overhang hid from the ridgeline We bent o'er our handles and we bit in the ground The dark and bloody ground Was a bitch to break ground but the wine kept us goin' The moonshine was flowin' and keepin' us warm 'Cause you can’t hold a girl with a fistful of shovel Got to find your fire in the company of corn We dug for a while then it all turned to ashes Found a bunch of broke flint and a few bits of bone Then I heard Jesse yell o'er the pile he was sifting Shook the hills like the angels were callin’ us home Jesse, Zachary come home It was banded as hell, it was fluted and clovis It was hot as the pistol I kept on my side I was fiending so fierce, I was broke ass and busted I pulled out my pistol and I took Jesse’s life >A clovis like that is a hard point to find Makes pills swift to come by with a good chunk of change Left over for burn on whatever meanness Whatever woman is comin' my way Darlin' come my way I sit in this cell for the banded clovis I stole off of Nolan when I killed'm that day I reckon the chase of the pills and the powder Corn liquor and woman are the culprits to blame
