This is a pretty bad mud spot in the track. I'm going to use my Jackson 6700
tamper to sweep as much mud as I can out of the crib ends. Then the
ballast regulator will come after and clean up the sides. Then dump some
new ballast and tamp it up. I tamped this spot 3 times that day and fixed
the surface and track alignment. It is now very solid track and should hold
up well thru the winter until we can get the middle of the ties cribbed out.

Thank you so much for the very nice comment Scott. I try my best to do what I can with the equipment, time and man power that is available plus dealing with weather conditions. Mud is our biggest problem here on the RR. Seems like you fix one spot and two more show up to take it's place....:-) At least all the train operators are telling me there is now a night and day difference in this spot, which makes me happy. There are only 2 of us that work track maintenance Mack. When we first started the mine back in 1977 US Steel had 4 track maintenance guys on the job and all for new track construction. We definitely need more guys, there is just so much to do and little time to do it with trains running. My buddy and I do what we can with what we are given in equipment, money and time to work the track plus trying to work around the weather. We have a lot of mud spots that have occurred this fall from all the rains just not enough time to get to all of them, plus with it being so cold these past few weeks we cannot haul frozen ballast or dig frozen ballast out of the track. Thank you for the very kind words and you are welcome, it's my pleasure to be able to make these videos and we are lucky I can do it. They do show what all it takes to keep trains running. Very grateful my friend for your taking the time to check out the tie sweeping video.

@ccrx6700 6 ай бұрын
No you are right Jim, but I've also been here the longest so should know a thing or two about the track... :-) The train operators had slowed down over this spot until I could get it fixed. Had to wait on the right weather, can't do this when stuff is frozen. Plus I have to wait on a train operator to haul ballast for us, which doesn't happen when they are running coal trains. So it went by for a time until we could get it done. At least all the train operators are telling me there is now a night and day difference in this spot, which makes me happy. Nice work with what you have available! Getting the shoulders opened up should help the track drain out better until you can get in there and undercut it. Might consider some nonwoven geotextile fabric under the ballast after you undercut it to help keep the mud from coming up into the ballast in the future. Not very expensive and helps a lot.
@ccrx6700

You are right mtgibbs, that road fabric is the ticket. Thank you for the nice comment Mary. Yes we do have our hands full. When coal fines consistently get in the track they soak down into the ballast and plug the ballast up. Then the water stays in the track and goes down. Every time the train passes the water gets pushed down and when the train unloads the ties act like a suction pump and bring mud back up with them. Quite a mess there, where did all the mud come from Dave?
@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 6 ай бұрын
Yes it certainly was Glenn. Where did the mud come from.... well first thing all the coal leaking out the car doors gets down in the ballast and plugs the ballast up. When that happens the water cannot get away from the track so it stays in there. When the train passes over it with all that weight, it tends to want to push the ties down and when it passes the ties come back up. That allows water to get under the ties. Next train the water gets pushed down by the ties and when the train passes and the ties come back up, that acts like a suction pulling mud back up with it. When that happens train after train then the cribs start to fill up with mud. When that happens the track surface and alignment just won't hold very good. It's a constant thing here dealing with mud in the track. New mud spots occur all the time. Coal fines down in the ballast are never a good thing. Very grateful my friend for your taking the time to visit with us and check out the tie sweeping video.

When I was a kid I liked to play in the mud Michael. However it usually got my mom upset with me. Now I play in the mud, get paid to do it, and it makes the train operators happy campers..... Things have sure changed over the years haven't they.....:-) Mud is our biggest problem out here on the track. It's finding time to deal with them because I need a locomotive to haul me ballast and they like to run trains here so I don't get to haul ballast all that often. Plus having to work around weather, can't do this kind of stuff when everythings frozen. Seems like we fix one mud spot and two more show up somewhere else to take it's place.... sigh. And it these had to get picked out by hand, then it ain't gonna happen unless they get some much younger guys out here! Very grateful my friend for your taking the time to visit with us and check out the crib sweeping video.

@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 6 ай бұрын
An under cutter would be nice americanlogger but you also need some down time on the track to do it, which is something we don't have a whole lot of time, they like to run trains here. We have done some under cutting before but it was always on a shut down period when the train wasn't running for an extended time. Plus hulcher is not always available to come in to do it for us. Since we do not interchange with another RR then getting one of those big shoulder cleaners in here is not an option either, so we do what we can with the equipment, time, man power we have plus working around weather conditions. You are certainly welcome Robin. You are right about the drainage. Several years ago they put a new pipe line along our track. On this particular curve the final grade when they dozed it sloped in towards the track so the surface water ran into our track. This certainly has not helped the mud problem in this curve. I asked for a rental dozer several years ago so I could grade the slope so the water ran away from the track, I'm still waiting on it to show up.... sigh..... Yep, another cool video, Dave. I'd like to know more about how the machine lifts and tamps .. that it's capable of lifting one rail or another 3/4 of an inch, or whatever is desired, and then tamp the ballast. Good work, thanks for sharing.
@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 6 ай бұрын
Thank you Kenneth for the nice comment, glad you enjoyed. There is a lifting device on the tamper called a jack beam that has hydraulic cylinders. When we move the machine ahead, there are clamps that go in against the rail and the hydraulic cylinders lift the rail up. That is controlled by a number of electrical things and when the proper surface level is attained the jacking on the hydraulic cylinders shuts off so it doesn't raise track up anymore. The computer on the machine tells the jack beam to raise one rail higher than the other to attain the proper super elevation. I have to manually set what super elevation I want for each different curve in the computer program for each curve. That's a pretty simple explanation of some complicated hydraulic/ electrical stuff going on making it all happen, but hope that helps explain it for you. Very grateful my friend for your taking the time to visit with us and check out the crib sweeping video.

Thank you for the nice comment Robin, you are right, water has to get drained away. Coal from leaky car doors plugged up this ballast and water can't get away when that happens. So the water stays in the track and gets pushed down when the train runs over it. Then when the train unloads, the ties act like a suction pump and pull mud back up with it. Eventually the mud takes over and then it's a real mess. All the train operators are telling me this spot is now a night and day difference from before. Very grateful my friend for your taking the time to visit with us and check out the crib sweeping video.

Hello Dave, I was wondering where the mud on your face came from, When I saw the condition of the base, I thought what a prime area for a derailment! with all the movement due to minimal rail support. what a difference! great job getting the rocks under the ties, and stabilizing the rails, preventing any pumping action on the tracks! that will destroy the ties and fatigue the rails. now it is a good fix until the time is available to do more of an extensive clean out of the coal / mud while replacing with stone.

Thank you for the very kind words Rishken. I do what I can with the equipment, track time and man power we have given to us, plus dealing with the weather, can't do this kind of stuff when it's frozen mud and ballast to work with. I think it will be just fine now until spring, all the train operators tell me it's a night and day difference from before. We do have a lot of mud spots here, more so since we've gotten a good bit of rain. Seems like you fix one spot and 2 more show up to take it's place. Sweet you could use the tamper to help get the mud moved to help drain it there. Now, after you took care of the ballast, it looks far better! Sturdy. You sure helped keep worse things from happening, that's for sure! In the city I live in, I got to see a tamper on a side track a couple weeks back. There were other pieces of equipment too. There were some bundles of ties off to the side. My guess is they're replacing bad ties, and will also put some new ballast in. The ties are looking poorly in areas. Also have some wet areas there. I'm glad they are looking after the rails around here too!😊

That's pretty cool they are doing some track work there Trena, hope you get to watch them do some work on it. If they need any assistance I'm sure you will be of help after watching my videos you know all about track maintenance now! :-) Tamper is not the best thing to use for getting mud out but it was all I had available to work with. But all the train operators are telling me it's a night and day difference now from what it was before which made me happy to hear. Very grateful my friend for your taking the time to stop by and check out the crib sweeping video.

Seems like every 2 years I go thru a new pair of work boots Steve. Walking on ballast is a bit hard on them, plus kicking track bolts to see if they are loose or not wears out the toes. Not sure if I'm on Santa's naughty or nice list but if I get a lump of coal for Christmas I will let you know....:-) Very grateful my friend for your taking the time to pay us a visit and check out the crib sweeping video.
