In part 3 of our Introduction to Cricket Farming video, we discuss considerations in brooder setups. How big should your brooder be? What type of material should it be made out of? How do you configure the insides to minimize escapes...

Many thanks for sharing.... Just wonder...would it be better if crickets provided with the ventilation on side of the box? Knowing that cricket lives in bushes in nature which allows plenty of air movement.

Hello there :) Thank you very much for the important and useful informations. I could not find anywhere basic answer. How many crickets do fit in a box per gallon? I am planning to put them in a 20 gallon bin, but I'm still not sure how many of them can i put there, so they won't cannibalize, or die off. Thank you very much :)

Great video! Do you know how many crickets do you get out of each container after a full cicle?
@craftcrickets847

Hello, It is going to vary due to a number of factors. The size of the bin I show in the video (30 gallon) is not optimal if you want to operate a large cricket farm, but it is good and easy if you just plan on raising a small amount in minimal space. In this size bin I get on average about four pounds of live weight. This has a lot of variability, and sometimes I may only get half that.

have you tried coconut husk for crickets to lay their eggs in im not sure if its dense enough. Thanks for sharing, im trying to set up a small farm for my self for extra protien.

Hey Steve. I have just started using coconut husk as an egg laying substrate. Crickets are hatching though I haven't measured whether or not I'm getting as many crickets. There definitely are more pinhead crickets that stay hiding in the coconut husk after hatching. I originally got the idea from another commercial cricket farm which used coconut husk as the egg laying substrate, so I'm quite confident that it can work well...it may just require some tinkering to find the best way.

Have you done any reserch into locusts. I have a lot of grass so would be easier to feed locusts but I see more people go for keeping crickets and presume there is a reason for this, I wounder if you know why more people go for keeping crickets. Thanks Simon

I am no expert in either cricket nor locust nor insect farming, but since I have experience in living in farm, whiteout in-depth research, I can tell locust farming is more difficult. Crickets don't really swarm, nor fly! Locusts swarm, and fly. So the required facility and method to farm them would be significantly different. And if a small locust swarm get away into wildlife, it can easily turn into an eco disaster.

What dry food are you using for the crickets to feed on? Thanks
@craftcrickets847
@craftcrickets847 6 жыл бұрын
I have tried making my own feed but for simplicity I typically just buy chick feed from the local feed store. It should have a lot of protein, at least 20%. I have tried all sorts of brands and varieties and the crickets like them all pretty much. I ultimately pick a brand based on the inputs that my customers like (i.e. organic...)

Why did you guys shut down your Eugene Oregon operation?! I was just fixing to buy some cricket flour from you! I wanted to come visit and everything! Y'all just broke my heart! I'm leaving Oregon! Craft crickets is no longer in Oregon! I'm leaving! 😟😢😭

Ha, don’t leave Oregon on behalf of us. The facility we were using wasn’t appropriate for raising cricket (wrong layout, poorly sealed, hard to heat). Lesson for all: be patient and find the right place for your farm instead of rushing into a suboptimal site for Cricket Farming. We have been exploring options for low cost urban cricket models but in the interim are out advocating.

Is cricket poop something you could safely add to compost?
@mill1627
@mill1627 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Keith. Yes, we add the cricket frass to compost. We actually get nearly as many requests for our cricket poop as for our crickets. We aren't compost experts, but people who like compost like the cricket frass. It is high nitrogen so be sure you mix it appropriately with compost and don't put the frass directly on your garden.

I had to just stop watching this. The worst audio I've ever heard on any YT video. I mean really. I don't know if the files got distorted through the upload or what. I can't believe you just didn't listen to the video after you made it. I really wanted to hear what you were saying, but after 5 1/2 mins. I couldn't understand anything. Your other videos (that I've seen so far) were fine.
