I haven't finished watching this video yet, but I'm already a subscriber. This is what I've been searching for. I'm a farmer of apples and trees in Ohio, but after tasting several insects and finding the flavor and texture agreeable, I want to farm insects. There's a dearth of information online about raising insects for human consumption, at least in the languages I speak. It seems videos are mostly in Thai. I don't speak Thai. So I'm hoping to be able to farm crickets and other insects here and get certified eventually to sell to the public. I plan to integrate insect raising into my no-waste farming system.

We are two local guys from the West Texas area and are very interested in becoming a cricket producer, wether it be live, frozen ect. We are so serious that we have become a LLC under our soon to be company. We are anchoring the rest of our paperwork so we can get going. We are very excited and we will be even more ecstatic if we could get sum feed back, pointers and or any mentoring that y’all could share with us. We love what y’all are doing. Hope to hear back soon.. there’s so much to talk about!! Thank you.

Did you go straight into farming crickets for consumption or did you start selling live crickets to pet stores etc...?

4 years later, what are your thoughts now? Do you see more people getting into eating crickets? *I am doing this on a small time basis because I want to hear live crickets. I want to close my eyes and be able to imagine I'm dining at the Blue Bayou restaurant at Disneyland. I also keep hens and can feed them cricket treats and I'd be happy if able to simply keep 100-200 crickets alive at any given time. I think that should be enough choir singers..

what we need to test is to see efficiency to keeping crickets at temp vs other livestock. methane is not an issue it breaks down easy in the atmosphere much quicker than co2 and methane can be harvested for CNG or LNG and is a much more renewable fuel source to power electricity but methane is also made by any waste breaking down even the vents going to your roof from your water lines release methane. methane is also made by composting and we need to start harnessing it :-)

Hi Austin, thank you for sharing your knowledge with this fast but detailed video guide. I have a question though: in the last video you suggest that the crickets need to get the right amount of protein, and throughout the video series you mention that you mix proteins with fruits and other things. My question would be: how much fruit and chickfood should you provide to X number of crickets? Or better: how much time does X number of crickets consume X Amount of food type X ? I am not sure I am making myself clear here, I more or less want to know the proportion between the number of creickets and the amount of food to be provided to them. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work !

Hi, Austin! Love your work... I'm looking to start an industrial-scale cricket farm, and in doing my research I can't seem to find any information on the safety of feeding my crickets a chick feed that contains a coccidiostat... I've found a chicken feed supplier that gives me confidence, and they have another product that seems great for older crickets, but do you think "a coccidiostat at low levels" would be safe for my pinheads?? Once again, love your work, and thanks in advance for any insight you're able to provide. 😊

I have a strange question .... so i was looking at farming crickets and have been researching different dietary options . While searching for adequate sources of protein one thought i had was cricket flour . Makes sense , high in protein and you already have a large available supply of crickets . Not to mention cickets do eat each other naturally . So I began reading on negative effects of animal cannibalism. I found some interesting studies that notice it spread diseases (as expected) , and interfered with the life cycles particularly of animals that malted . Could this be the source of the cricket virus ? Watching videos from large scale farms they all seem to hint towards a secret blend for their feed? I was curious why you would need to sprinkle a cricket with calcium powder , because this would not be present in a wild cricket . Do you know if anyone has compared nutrional value of wild caught crickets vs farm raised crickets? Have you compared your nutrional values to that of other large scale farms? And do you feed cricket flour with your cricket feed for added protein? Im thinking it would be to hard to compete with these large scale farms on price .... so naturally im thinking of competing with quality . A more adequate food source , and for someone who feeds 30 or 40 crickets a week spending an extra dollar for a higher quality cricket that doesnt need calcium powder or high protein gut loading prior to feeding might very well be worth it .

Hey John. Good questions. You are correct that crickets will practice cannibalism. If they ever run out of food or if their food is lacking in protein, they will start eating each other. I do not know whether or not this directly spreads disease for crickets. I know this is definitely an issue with other animals, but I do not definitively know the impact of cricket cannibalism. I ensure my crickets always have plenty of nourishing food so that they won't resort to cannibalism. Perhaps crickets eating cricket flour would serve as a superior source of protein for the crickets. I don't know. I wouldn't feed it to my crickets though. One of the most common questions I receive from customers is, "What do you feed the crickets?" At least my customers are very particular and would not want to hear that I feed crickets to the crickets. They like to hear that my feed is organic, local, and non-GMO. Whether or not any of that matters, I don't know, but I do want my customers to be happy. When farms state they have a "secret blend", I'd be surprised if they were suggesting that crickets are included in the blend. I think it more has to do with additions such as calcium. I personally just care about getting a blend of grains/fruit/veggies which yield a 22% protein ratio (a % that has worked best for me). If I feed them less than 22% protein, I get a worse yield. I have compared some nutritional labels. As expected, our crickets contain less protein when we feed them less protein and less fruit and veggies. Our crickets normally have about 60% protein. Some people say their crickets have protein %'s in the high 60's. These crickets would be fed a super protein diet with zero food scraps. We like the idea of feeding our crickets some food scraps to make the diet more sustainable and willingly accept a slightly less protein-rich cricket as a trade-off. Cheers.

You mention if raising on a commercial level the space you would need increases to 2000-3000 sqf minimum. Can you estimate with that space the quanity of crickets you can raise. Maybe on a per 1000 sqf breakdown over a specific period of time. Again an estimate will be fine. Thanks.

Hello there, I am trying to get an idea of the typical yield of a cricket farm such as yours. How much would you say was your daily yield per cubic metre of farm space?
@craftcrickets847
@craftcrickets847 6 жыл бұрын
I am quite an inefficient farm as my Bin size is suboptimal and due to a few other reasons. Neverthess, when I have the bins stacked I get about 8 lbs per square meter every cycle (each cycle is 6-8 weeks).

"Insects are the food of the future" Yeah lol if you own a bible and read it when crap hits the fan im betting for a short time insects are the food of the future. Sorry I had to say that just the commentary made me laugh. No Im not here to thump ppl with a bible Im actually just here to learn about cricket farming to supplement my free range poultry diet, and possibly engage the alternative food market. Also I live in Oregon and I grow a variety of exotic vegetables in my one of a kind water recirculating wind powered off grid green house.
