A Lousiana creole here, and you did a good job. Just revisit New Iberia area last week and YT video sent this to me.

I’m glad that you clarified that it’s Louisiana English. Accept no substitute!

Great to see information on Louisiana being put out there by someone who's from here and who knows what he's talking about.

Thanks, this is very helpful! I sometimes hear people (such as our mayor, LaToya Cantrell) stretch out New Orleans to "New Or-lee-anz," but definitely no one says N'awlins.

Yes I needed this video. I hate when people pronounce these places incorrectly. I just started learning this language. Thanks for this video

I realize that this is an older video but I was so happy to find it!! My grandfather and great grandparents were born in Raceland. I've never been really sure how to pronounce some of the Parish names and your video has helped! I've also been working on my family genealogy for about 40 years. I've hit some dead ends - including the inability to find out when my great grandmother died {Marie Ophelia Boudoin, b 12 Nov 1853 in Lafourche Parish}. Some of the other names in my family are Knoblock, Toups, Lagemann, Thibodeaux, Azemar and Waguespack. I can't wait to watch some of your genealogy videos!

Exactly on point! I grew up in Des Allemands and lived in Houma and Breaux Bridge (Pont Breaux) This is exactly how I pronounce all these .... including New Orleans!

Good job! The video was interesting, educational, and entertaining. As a native of NOLA and having traveled to all the cities/parishes you mentioned I really enjoyed it.

This was very interesting and I greatly appreciate knowing the correct pronunciation when I discuss my ancestry. I was surprised that I knew most,in fact all, but Natchitoches. When I read the history of the area I stumbled and wondered how this was pronounced....now I know. I am also Breaux using the various spellings and also an Aleman. My Aleman was Juan and came from the Canary Islands. My mother was a Terrio (Theriot)which also had many spellings and finally they settled on the spelling of the way it sounded....I guess🤔! Thanks again for some great info on the subject.

Doctor Landry, this is really good! I ran across a few on a "pronounce these LA place names" video, but the phonetics were very unclear. Maybe you can help. The 3 are: Plaucheville [PLAWSH-ville?], Cloutierville [CLOOT-er-ville?], Chopin [like the composer?]. Thanks very much.

/ploe shay vil/ /kloo chee vil/ /shoe pañ/ That's in English in south Louisiana. In Kouri-Vini and Louisiana French: /kloo chay veel/ /ploe shay veel/ /shoe pañ/

Doesn't Steel Magnolias take place in or around Natchitoches as well? Don't know how well-remembered it is these days, but the book and movie were kind of big when they came out.
@cacardneaux2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was filmed in downtown Natchitoches. I was in College at the time and it was being filmed in the same neighborhood that I lived in and around town. If I remember right the year was 1988 because I graduated from high school in 87 and started College after that and it may have went into 1989.

Here is one for you - Ouachita. No one outside of Louisiana pronounces that one correctly.
@cattycorner82 жыл бұрын
Larry McClain Except Arkansas. Arkansans have the Ouachita Mountains and Lake Ouachita. It's pronounced "wash i taw" there. Maybe different in Louisiana. 😊

If you're from Louisiana you know we pronounce Lafayette, Laffy ette. Yes the way you said it is the correct but it's not the way Cajuns pronounce it. Homua is south east of Lafayette, it is south of New Orleans.

I accessed this video in hopes of finding out how to pronounce "Avoyelles". I saw two other on line but they were robotic voices so I prefer that a real human being pronounce it . I love in New Brunswick Canada the heart of Acadia where there are a lot of the same family names. The name "Breau" here has no "-x" o the end and I was told that the original settlers were illiterate so the priest signed their name for them and they added their "x" hence Breaux, Thibodeaux and Arcneaux (which is usally spelt Arsenault here).

Houma would not be considered South of Lafayette. Erath, Abbeville and New Iberia are south of Lafayette.
@ChristopheLandryPhD5 жыл бұрын
It's just a geographic reference. People know Lafayette, not Thibodaux. Even at the geographic level, Houma is south of Lafayette. Have to deal with the cartographers on that one. :)
@troyscards682 жыл бұрын
I got here from your alphabet video. But even by cartographical evaluation, i.e. how it looks on a map, Houma, Thibodaux, and Raceland are more a accurately described as southwest of NOLA vs southeast of Lafayette. And that is, as they say, as the crow flies. But in pure driving description, if I'm coming from Baton Rouge, almost DIRECTLY north of Houma by compass, and went by your directions of south of Lafayette, you just took me way, way out of the way! And that, cher (pronounced SHA) is Pas Bon!
