Come join me as we wander through the Mr. Pisgah Cemetery in Cripple Creek, Colorado. This was an old mining town and they also had some donkeys that roamed the area begging for food. Of course we had to oblige!

Rhett, I enjoyed this cemetery tour in Cripple Creek, Colorado, it's a very fascinating cemetery. I loved the various gravesites that were fenced in and the breathtaking scenery of the mountains, trains sounds, church bells, birds, etc. Loved you and your family feeding and intermingling with the donkeys, too. Great investigating, presentation and photos, too. Have a fantastic weekend. Take care 🐎

This cemetery is full of people prudent to the history in Teller County, Colorado. During the hay day of Colorado’s gold rush, Cripple Creek almost became our state capital. The donkeys you met are in fact relatives of the mining donkeys. Dr. Susan Anderson has two headstones at the cemetery. Doc Susie to some . The tv show Dr. Quinn, medicine woman was a tv show based loosely on her life.

Very interesting and different cemetery. Almost has a surreal whimsical feel to it. Maybe it’s the altitude with the fog and the sounds that seems to travel far. Or the sunken graves with trees growing up from them.

I love that you take us along on your random cemetery walks, Rhetty - and your edits with added information and even pictures are truly memorable. It's such a beautiful, peaceful place to rest for eternity - the birds are chirping, the trains are puffin', the church bells are a-ringing, whilst the clouds are rolling in. One could do much worse than to rest here. And who doesn't love donkeys?!!! Well, I do.. They are the sweetest and the most stubborn creatures - but they'll do anything for an apple and a scratch behind the ears, LOL. Thank you for a lovely video! XX

@@RhettyforHistory LOL - They WILL eat anything! I don't know about cameras, but best to be careful, LOL. I used to go and stay with a school friend for the school holidays when I was a girl, and her family owned a Donkey Farm. There were around 100 Crucifix Donkeys, and there were a special few with their own saddles and my friend knew all of the trails that led from their station into the little town, the beach, and ti all of the Freshwater swimming holes on their station (what you call a ranch). I fell in love with the Donkeys on my first visit - but I was not impressed when they broke into the home-paddock one night and ate all of my underwear off the clothesline, except for what I was wearing! (Yes - they really WILL eat anything - and everything, LOL!) My friend's Mum had to take me into town to buy new ones as I was staying for several weeks and the Donkeys ate them all! But they're so cute and loveable that I had forgiven them before we even got them back into their own paddock before breakfast .. They'll follow anyone with the loaf of bread, LOL! Adorable but very mischievous 🤣😂🤣
@RhettyforHistory
@RhettyforHistory 2 жыл бұрын
They do seem to be motivated by food and these came up pretty quick so I thought they must be pretty bad. That's funny they ate your underwear off the line! I know goats, lamas and ostriches will do that too. Those donkeys and lamas are invaluable to farmers and their livestock.

I am a third generation Coloradan perhaps I can fill in some little blanks. Those donkeys wandering around town they are descendants from the gold rush donkeys and they have names and are well cared for. They are friendly and always looking for a hand out. The cemetery has thousands of unmarked graves many people were buried there during that horrible flu epidemic during WW1. Just buried there nothing to mark where they are, a potters field. They are buried in the open field below the cemetery close to the road going into town. It was customary for people in the 19th century to surround their graves with fences that custom continued into the early 20th. Those trees that are there all over the cemetery are aspen trees not birch. And just a friendly word of advice when visiting the Rocky Mountains even in the summer always bring a jacket. Weather moves in fast and the temperature drops like a rock. Nice video thank you for posting.

Most rural cemeteries have fences to keep cows from knocking tombstone over but in Cripple Creek fences are to keep elk from doing same . Elk will migrate through area and there may be as many as two hundred elk on hillside in cemetery. Along w Pearl’s grave other famous people interred @CC are Mabel Barbee Lee , author, Doc Susie, one of the first women doctors in US and a horse which has a very interesting back story. If u are inclined research into CC and Mt. Pisgh Cemetery is time well sent and most entertaining. Ps- the donkeys are fed and cared for by dedicated volunteers so pls don’t feed them crap!!

What an incredibly fun video this was! My husband and I used to do history reenactments and finally remember this town. They didn't have any interest in the cemetery and it was too chilly for Sarah to get out but that all changed when we saw the Donkeys. We had no idea about this town and we were really just traveling the back roads trying to see the beautiful scenery of Colorado. It is a beautiful state. I think the stones are just from when they were digging the graves. I am not sure how thick all that is but I think they put it on top just to mark the grave. It definitely gives it an old west feel. I just saw this so someone has maybe already commented. Donkey Derby Days in the summer is when they gather the donkeys (descendants from the miner's donkeys) and race them through town. Just one of the things going on at this fun yearly festival. And beware of said donkeys. I had some chase me into a house one time because I fed one but they all wanted whatever it was. Good times from high school (Manitou Springs). Thanks for the memories because I live in Alabama now.
