I like to talk about the "Queen bee syndrome", which is what is happening on the Rogue's story, I think. Some girls like to be the center of attention in groups predominantly made up of guys, and when there is another girl there, there tends to be conflict. The conflict tends to be veiled and very subtle, however. Nearly 20 years ago I had a group of friends, and we liked to RP. But there was this one girl, and she didn't like me (me, being the gf of the dm). None of the guys EVER realized we didn't get along, just the one guy that briefly dated her, because he started to treat me awfully and a few years later came to apologize and spat it all out. Sufice to say, it was a ride. Point being... Girl's toxic behavior tends to be a bit more subtle, most of the times.
@dillongage
@dillongage Жыл бұрын
No I promise you, if its not a group of clueless teenagers, we notice. there's just nothing we can do except let you hash it out. You guys think you're subtle, you're not. At all. If we say something you'll both just deny it 99% of the time. Trust me, I've tried before and then I'm insulted for "making stuff up" and "trying to start conflict", only to months later have one person "confess" that they don't get along as if we didn't all know already. Men operate with the assumption that women do not like other women. That's the default for us. If yall didn't show up together, you don't like each other. Period. End of story.

Stranger stuff has happened than the flirt attempt. Went to school (about ~16) and had a guy constantly berating me and putting me down. Had a relationship with another person and they explained to me that apparently the guy was flirting? I did like ask "are you sure? that guy is like insulting me and putting me all the time". Yet apparently, that's that guys way of flirting? (its been in the late 90s where I don't think the concept of negging was as defined as it became later)

I can totally empathize with that last poster. I had several early on games with almost absolute strangers that just expected me to play a female character then threw very close to an adult temper tantrum because I was more interested in the characters I'd created versus changing my gender for what ever reason they had. Lucky enough where I am now though we have a really awesome LGS where that kind of behavior would have been dealt with. The first time that I ever gamed, I was, unfortunately, a Jenny. I didn't know any better, but I definitely was also uncomfortable with the amount of attention I was getting from the DM and how the other players just didn't get it. Even to a newbie, it is apparent when the game is off-balance like that. It is never apparent to the person trying to hookup rather than game, though. At level 1, my character was so over-powered that I was able to use my super far-sight to see a problem before the group, use my super flying speed to zoom ahead to the bandit camp, literally one-shot the ENCOUNTER with an AOE, zoom back to the party and have none of the other characters notice anything that I did or wonder why I was gone. Then, my character got to pretend that I didn't know what had happened when we came across the decimated bandit camp and the party started looking into that mystery. This was the first encounter that I ever played in any tabletop RPG system. Because I didn't know any better, I derailed the campaign and let the other players listen more than participate. What I did was funny, but not really fun for anyone other than the DM. Jenny's DM sounds very similar. Especially the way he is grooming her (at the very least, his strange "reward" system when she pouts about not making the final hit combined with him conditioning her to expect to be the one to make that final hit is a huge waving red flag). I was young and dumb and gave the DM NiceGuy™ a chance after his persistence. Then, I ended up spending two years trying to break up with him while he was constantly proposing to me. It took other gaming friends to help me get out of that toxic situation. OP needs to speak up, especially if Jenny is a new player.

Intro: Not going to lie, they had me in the first half. Simp Ruins D&D: And here be unsubtle favortism in its element. Yeah, as Crispy said, talk to them. Nothing improves if nothing is said, and if he does ignore your criticism (assuming you said it in a constructive and polite way), than if he does freak out or ignore you, you can leave knowing you at least tried to fix the problem. We can't control how anyone else act, just bring things to their attention. Roll20's Worst Impression: That wasn't a Roll20 exclusive issue, to be frank. Anyone can hide their actual personality in a LFG. Still, it's not fun when a DM is that trigger-happy for something so small. At least OP bailed before the game started. The Attempted Homewrecker: I blame bad romances who paints the relationship is bad for petty reasons. I wish that OP and DM talked to Rogue. Might cause problems latter on if they don't make it clear what the issue is. The Creepiest Game: One reason for berating the sex the incel is into is because they want to "break" them to get into their pants. And yes, it's as creepy as it sounds. Also, Joe and Don are likely both sexist in this case. OP shows disdain for the "favortism," yet Don blames her instead of the DM, the one hitting on her. Them bonding over her quitting just solidifies that. And having to ignore what actually happened to lie and make her look bad is also a very bad sign on their end (assuming OP is being truthful, which we don't have much reason to think she isn't).

Local game stores get a pretty bad rep, but honestly it's mostly deserved. At my game store, I went in to buy some D&D books- They have a bunch of 3D maps set up in one half of the store, so I decided to admire them (with my hands behind my back so nobody got worried I would mess with them) and got snapped at by one of the cashiers and told not to touch them. I left well enough alone, grabbed the books I wanted, and someone came into the store with a box full of vintage videogames to sell which took up both of the cashier's attention for 10+ minutes while I waited in line. I'm disabled and can't stand for long, so I put the books back and left. Far from the worst encounter in the world, but the only other time I went there the staff was just as standoffish and dismissive, so I haven't been back since.

the first story sounds a lot like the game i dropped, minus the DM dating the player getting special treatment. basically DM ran out of ideas for the campaign and admitted this, so the plot for the main game got changed to the plot of the side game, which had a heavy focus on a pc's backstory- or at least it felt like that, cause every time the party had a problem to solve we just go find a npc related to the pc's backstory. at first i was okay with this cause we were still getting bits of our backstory, but after the DM told me the pc's friend was a kind of dragon, and then the DM retconned that so the pc didn't feel bad about dragging the party on a in game month long back to back fetch quest, i gave up.

As a player though.. it put me in a place I didn't wanna be. I felt like I constantly had to try and rope the Passive players in to avoid it becoming favoritism of my character and the like. This isn't an rpg horror story by any means, but your comment about not being able to leave drama at the door reminded me of it. I'm (still) DM for a game that used to include my ex-best friend. A few months back we got into a decent fight, but weren't seeing each other regularly. Freind said she wanted to take a break & not talk for a while (unrelated to dnd), and I replied saying I didn't like that arrangement, I'd be willing to but I really wanted to actually talk out our issues (I've had multiple freinds pull this exact shit, using "let's take a break" as an excuse to ignore the issue and ditch me.) We did wind up talking about the issues in a pretty calm, mature manner, but both got interrupted by life and kinda just went on. I wasn’t contacting them other than our weekly sessions anyway, but during this time we played at least 2 games and things were fairly normal. Between sessions, I text them about their character, and they don’t respond. After a few days, I text again, saying I really need them to respond. They get frustrated and remind me that they *said* they wanted a break and I needed to stop texting them. I got super mad at this point, asking how tf they expected to play a game I was DMing without them talking to me. I gwt that maybe it was a little unclear on whether or not we were going with taking a break, but I do not understand how they can possibly think we're dojng that when we're still playing every week (which in our games always ends up with some chatting about life anyway, and actually *they* often initiate just chatting about life rather than playing, not a big deal but definitely not "taking a break"). What makes it more annoying is the entire reason I was mad at them was because they have always been really noncommunicative and seemed to ignore me-- why I thought a break wasn't the best solution. Anyway, they said fine they could stop playing with us, and it blew up into a much bigger fight and now we're no longer freinds. Got slightly off topic here XD but my point is no, you can't just seperate dnd and non-dnd drama. Dnd is a freind hang, it's not like you're gunna meet up for a CAH game with people you're taking a "freind break" from. Dnd is the same. I never brought my anger with them into the game/took it out on their character, but that doesn't mean they're seperate, just that I'm not an asshole. Whole situation seriously damaged my motivation to finish the current campaign arc, but I'm trying to bring the fun back.

Man that sounds like way too much effort. I used to be the guy that always had to text first to get plans made etc, stop doing that entirely and now I only have a few friends left and honestly life has never been better. Way less stressful, way less cleaning my house after people make a mess etc. I'm also a guy, I feel that makes a difference. I talk to my best friend maybe once a week, a couple memes back and forth and that's it. Well go 2-3 months without talking and then pick up like nothing happened.

I just started DMing and I actually have a rule in my current campaign that the only party member who can land the killing blow to end the fight is my sister’s character. The reason? The other two party members are DMPCs meant to support her. Generally, for future campaigns with multiple PCs, I’ll have a soft rule that fights have to end with a *player* delivering the killing strike (maybe one or two fights with an NPC saving them for story reasons, but very VERY rarely)

I have a wierd separate drama from the table. I started dating my ex and introduced him to a new campaign that was starting with a new dm at the game store. A couple months into the game, we broke up, but he decided to stay in the campaign. A few months later the dm and I started dating. Kept it subtle at the table but I wasn't hiding that I was in a relationship. It was in my social media of which my ex is still one of my friends. After about two years we finish the campaign, delayed cuz covid, and planned out session zero for the next campaign. Session 1 happens and my ex doesn't show. To this day I have no idea what happened but have the feeling he doesn't want to hear from me. Even though I legitimately have no negative feelings toward him.

I used to seriously consider D&D as a possible tool for therapy. After hearing so many of the stories in this playlist, I'm viewing it now as a pretty reliable tool for identifying people who desperately NEED therapy, along with re-enrollment in Kindergarten.

I don’t think I’ll personally ever understand why in recent years, there’s been a surge of people who are interested in… What I can only describe as “home wrecking“. Coming into the middle of a relationship, and attempting to break it up by either claiming that you are better for one of the people in the relationship, or throwing mud around in order to make it look like the relationship is bad.
@ArcCaravan

I think cuckolding is another word for that. Seem's like a power play or ego boost from making someone end their relationship for the cuckolding person. Or people obsessed with stories about heroes saving damsels from horrible relationships. Maybe they just feel entitled to someone without concern for their target's relationship.

I mean Sean Connery is old enough that I could believe he was alive on the 1920s. I'm also constantly surprised by how common Tabaxi characters are. I get they're good for stealth build but how many possibly made it over from Maztica? Do they exist in settings outside FR and I'm just missing something? Maybe I'm just biased because I find them creepy. I saw the 1e depiction of Tabaxi and I've been scarred ever since.

I mean, to be fair to the attempted home wrecker in that paranoia game, wouldn't it make sense to assume that a person who is in a relationship might be better at sex than a bunch of single people who may not be having any sex at all? Like many things, practice can improve your ability, so as uncomfortable as the answer may have been, it could very well be a valid answer. Honestly, the person who came up with the question is just as responsible, if not more so, for that specific situation. She may be a problem overall, but I can't really blame her for that answer without knowing more info about the other players.

OP is being a little petty towards Rouge tbh. You're playing a game designed to create embarrassing situations by requiring truthful answers, and then you get upset when they follow the rules? Do you get upset when people tell the truth in truth and dare? The flirty messages were the first and only reasonable thing to be upset about. Sounds like the entire group is immature college kids tbh, OP is just as bad as Rouge tbh.

Last Story: The reason why this happens is because guys like this don’t ACTUALLY want to date the women they do this to. What they actually want is the power high that comes from forcing others into creepy scenarios and making them uncomfortable. Guys like this don’t want an equal relationship with a woman, but the satisfaction of forcing a woman to do what he wants. It’s the same reason rapist and predators do the same behavior, even if the end result isn’t as outwardly dangerous. It’s a slippery slope. And when a woman actually speaks up for herself, he can justify it in his mind that she’s being unreasonable and dramatic so he doesn’t have to feel bad for being an asshole. In his mind, he’s not actually interested in pursuing a relationship, he just wants someone to mock and terrorize.

wanna know what's fucked, in 2015 I had one of my players use our D&D sessions to get close with my wife at the time, I'd be DMing for a group of 7-8 people so my attention was buried in the goings on in the game, he'd be making it seem to her that I wasn't interested in her and more wanted to game blah blah, I, blissfully unaware, was blindsided one day months later with "we're in love" and I was out, just like that. The happy side to that tale is everyone at the table kicked him from the group for his utter douchbaggery and after I got moved we found somewhere else to game, that group (without him obviously) game to this day :)
