Hey, I’m the writer from the story at 6:13 ! Really appreciate the support and the affirmation that it’s not me, just the group haha. I’ve never heard anything else from that group, and I heard one of them failed, so none of us are really seeing each other on a daily basis anymore. Since that story, I’m back to playing pretty consistently with my usual group, where my tendency to be extra is appreciated. It feels great to be in a group that isn’t afraid of rp. They also get really excited over cohesive character art in the game, and I have a designated channel in the discord to post character art. The game with my ranger is no longer happening, but he was my first character and still holds a special place (drakewarden, for anyone curious. I named my drake Otto, and we flavored him as a robot). I still adore my half-elf sorcerer from this game, and I am saving her as a backup character. I spent too long on her art and backstory for it to go wasted like how it did in that campaign.

First, appreciation for the name Otto^^ Second, I don't think you're particularly extra, I think it's normal to have cohesive backstories and character art. All the people I played with had them, so I think you're the normal player and THEM were the weirdos. Like, turning down free art? What the heck? Probably they would've better play some other tabletop game like Munchkin rather than DnD, since they didn't seem to bother with the roleplay and artistic side of the game. I too have characters with a lot of backstory and art who unfortunately didn't see to conclusion since the campaign(s) died, but they're still there. Waiting. One day, it'll be their time to shine.

Something fun to do with a backup character if you have to rework their backstory is to take the adventure they were originally planned for/how you thought they would work and make that their childhood fantasy before they began to train and hone their skills to become an adventurer, and a motivation to get into a real one to see how it holds up to their fantasy!

That’s crazy! I play a half-elf dragon blood sorceress character in one of my friend’s campaigns who unknowingly to her in character is actually nobility but was sent away from the fey realms to be safe from corruption and as such believed her magic and scales were a curse for being fey. (In the DM’s world there’s an internal war between fey and dragon kind, thus my character is a sort of bridge, but she also doesn’t know that either.) Anyways love the choice of character all the same! 😊

@VeronicaSipe

Honestly at early levels Ranger is pretty OP normally. I consider it to be just a bit misconceived when it come to Favored Enemy and Natural Explorer from a fun perspective. I know that’s what the revised version addresses but I still don’t think it’s a complete fix. But that’s more of a concern I have as a DM when my player wants to be a ranger, like whether they’ll be disappointed with those features. Rangers are still super viable party members and I like to play them myself.

Man I felt the casual group one. I have a player who is in another group who is very casual and extremly uninvested. She makes art, memes, speculations and drives most of the scheduling. She gets absolutely nothing back. When she joined my campaign she was super apologetic about being to much and im like "girl most dms would kill to have a player as invested as you!" But i feel really bad for her about that group constantly making her feel the odd one out.

Being in that group would completely suck the fun out of DnD. Our GM loves to use backstories to draw the group into things. He loves it when we flesh out our character's NPCs. I heard the titular before and this epilogue reminds me of a tabletop horror story I heard today. Another DM took control of a former player's character with worse "intentions" and when said jerk tried bragging to the former player about abusing said character, OP just told him the character left with her and what he has was just an NPC instead of the real thing.

I think the inclusion of the weapon gift in the final story was to really drive home that the DM potentially misinterpreted the player gender and was playing favoritism/gift giving, and consequently on game day discovering that the individual they were sugar babying isn't a single, available woman, decided to sexually assault their character to satisfy the fantasy they had in their head/punish the player for a perceived insult to their fragile masculinity.

Ranger's biggest weakness (at least where Beast Master and Drakewarden are concerned) isn't even the class's fault. Companion based subclasses are just badly written imo. I'm sure they can pop off under the right circumstances, but the rules as written for them are just whack
@kaylawoodbury2308
@kaylawoodbury2308 3 ай бұрын
That and some of the features while neat on paper are very situational and often DMs won't throw you a bone. Favored terrain is forests and favored enemies are Orcs? Too bad, the next 5 months worth of sessions is dealing with Fey in the plains😌 oopsie poopsie 🤷🏼‍♀️. I've even seen Ranger players be accused of metagaming just for picking terrain and enemy based on the module they were going to play rather than making a backstory unconnected to the module and choosing terrain and enemy based on that. Or hyper limiting what's permitted as a beast companion. It's hard enough to play Ranger without people actively making it worse to fit a bias.

I genuinely love being a ranger main. The trick really is getting all the information you need from your dm and fellow players first though. Because rangers are highly customizable with their optional features, it’s best to figure this stuff out so you are playing a build you enjoy and feel is useful. I think, of the subclasses for ranger, my current favorite is the feywanderer but this is probably more because I’ve been playing a lot of intrigue and story heavy campaigns and that is where the feywanderer can shine. Especially with insight and those charisma skills.

But seriously, I keep finding new stuff, like the cabbage guy. Then you'll run into a similar issue in BG2, where you can spend about 80% of the game in Act 2 (Act 1 is the Prologue and very short), due to it being flooded with most of the side-quests. And with the Expansion, you get a giant bonus dungeon on top of that (and, if you don't finish it, can access it also during the expansion storyline, which is otherwise set in a different area) And let's not forget that it allows you to spend half of Act 3 in an entirely optional area depending on another choice you make near the end of the mandatory part of Act 3. BG1 isn't much better - or much worse. While sidequests are a bit more spread between acts, the first Expansion "Tales from the Sword Coast" is nothing but side-quests adding one medium sized dungeon crawl, one small island, and one massive multi-layer-dungeon which you can even stumble into by accident (tho you have to accept the quest to get access to the final boss, who's NOT inside the dungeon). So... that seems to be just a thing in this franchise.

@@gimok2k5I spent the most time in Act 1. It’s a huge area with lots of little quests, definitely a good way of opening up the world to the players. Act 2 is my favourite act, I don’t know why but the fights and the lore in the Shadowlands is really cool! I have never finished Act 3 because there is literally so much to do in the city and I kinda got bored because it felt like a bunch of finishing quests for characters and preparation for the Elder brain.

Ranger is weak because of Beast Master. It should be part of the main class and a command (attack, flee, defend, protect me, fetch, etc.) should last until you command otherwise, instead of having to use your action to command the companion every round. When I used those rules the Ranger class was just fine. Due to many other problems with 5e, however, I don't play it anymore anyway.

The awkward invitations one is relatable tbh. Everything you said was correct! And no matter how much a person cares about another one, no one is obligated to include every friend in every activity just because they dropped a hint. In fact forcing it can be awkward as hell and make people feel like they don’t have a choice. My online tabletop group is small and tight knit to the point where any new members have to be voted in by the whole group, and many of them are very particular about who comes in for understandable personal reasons. If someone I knew had wanted to join and the others said no, that is nothing personal against them.

I love drawing my characters. My last campaign (which so far hasn’t gone past session 1 and may not go further unfortunately), I was so inspired by the characters that we all decided to play that I drew them all for everyone. During our character creation during session 0, my sister and our other friend were thinking of playing shifters independently of each other, so as a joke I suggested that I’d play a shifter too and we’d be a party of shifters. I’m the type of player who, in smaller parties, likes to wait and see what other people are playing then deciding what to play to balance out the parties needs. In our first campaign my sister wanted to play a cleric but she doesn’t understand how dnd typically works and our friend wanted to play a blood hunter, so I played a firbolg Druid with high constitution so I could be a backup healer if my sister went down, could tank a bit and provide support spells for our blood hunter friend. In this current campaign I suggested to my sister that a monk might be preferable to her to play since she doesn’t understand how actions work and tends to want to just punch enemies despite having access to weapons and magic. Our friend liked my Druid from the last campaign and wanted to try it out. I also think Rangers are cool and just switched my favorite class to play from rogue to ranger so I was playing a ranger with a pirate background. My sister and I both independently described our characters with similar features so I jokingly said that our characters might be siblings and since we were a party of shifters, we decided that all our characters were related. We put way more effort into our back stories because we were getting really into it. My sister ended up playing a swiftstride shifter monk who was the daughter of a noble ho sent her to a monestary for acting out (no she has never watched critical role). Her character resents her father for cheating on her mother constantly, one of those said affair partners was my character’s mother, the captain of a pirate ship. My character, a longtooth shifter Ranger, was raised on the pirate ship and met his half sister when seeking out information on who his father was. Our friend was our cousin who had been raised in the wilds and was a Wildhunt shifter Druid. I was so inspired by how much effort we all put into making these characters and their back stories I drew them to use on their character sheets on dnd beyond. I sent the pictures to my party members for feedback and edited them until everyone was happy. Our dm was so happy and surprised when she saw we had all put our custom art on dnd beyond. Even if we don’t end up getting past that session 1 from months ago. This experience was so much fun for me and it felt great doing something nice for others and inspired me so much. Character creation is my favorite part of any game, video game, tabletop rpg, etc. so I’m excited for the future.

Horror story: It was my first D&D game, so my really good friend who was to be our DM helped me with character creator & learning some of the basic mechanics. In total, there were four of us & I was excited to see the world the dm had made for us & finally get into the game. The champaign started out fine enough despite me having to miss out on session zero due to my college finals, which actually worked out well given my character's backstory as a semi-feral tiefling/hag young woman who had spent most of her life as ranger in the wood far from society with her only companion being her dog. The other three players were turtle drunken monk (problem player 1), a human blood hunter (problem player 2), and an Asimar Paladin (DM character). In game, everything was going fine. They had found my character after trying to find my dog's owner, I was adopted into the party as my character was an orphan who, by the end of the champion, was basically adopted by the Paladin. Most of the issues started outside of the game with the off-hand comments made by Monk that came off as weird but weren't necessarily creepy at least at first while Blood hunter was half there which can't be totally their fault since they were also at college at the time so we just brushed it aside that is until we got to the carnival session. Up until this point, our party had gotten into a few scraps & had been able to walk away from them relatively fine outside of a few scares & that my character had gotten badly burned on her left wing while defending the city we were at. So our DM lets us take a small break from the fighting & mystery solving to have fun at a carnival. While my character, Monk, and Paladin were off enjoying ourselves, Blood Hunter was having none of it & just kept saying: "I patrol the grounds." After some time, my character sees a tattoo artist & decides to get a tattoo of a bird, the Paladin who is with her joins in, & so does Monk. We all get bird tattoos. The only one left is the Blood Hunter, who, when looking back, we probably shouldn't have peer pressured as hard as we did into getting a bird tattoo with us as he spent the rest of the session basically not talking while his character just patrolled around. The next session comes & this is where everything explodes. Monk turns out to be a creepy incel because it turns out this entire time those weird comments outside of the game were them trying to flirt with the DM who rejected said flirting. Meanwhile, Blood Hunter was completely checked out to the point that during the big attack on the city, they let their character die just so they could re-roll a new character. My character makes a massive save by rolling a Nat 20 to keep her now father figure from sacrificing himself by going into a portal to save an NPC but in the end we only manage to save a small handful of the city while the rest are turned into zombies. After that, we only ever really had a few more sessions with my character being on her way to becoming the avatar of the Eldritch Elk God she worshipped & Blood Hunter's new character becoming the champion of twin Gods. I know it not worst horror story but it was not a good time. Thankfully I still enjoy the game & the Dm & I are still friends

Rangers in 5E really got the short end of the stick. I mean, when your level 20 capstone ability is something that should just be a level 1 feature of the class, and actually wouldn't be too overpowered as a level 1 class feature, you know the class has been screwed over.

While that self-invitation definitely makes them NTA, it would be easy to BECOME the asshole if they don't let Jane down in an understanding way. Emphasize that the group is already too big and the self-invitation was crossing a line. But if OP is actually interested in being friends with Jane, they shouldn't bar her from getting to know their other friends. Been down that road myself about being excluded, and being on the receiving end of that could make her feel like they don't actually want to be friends with her. OP's obviously not responsible for Jane, but Jane could probably use some emotional support to make new friends. Even if Jane can't join their massive game, it would be worth it to still introduce her to the group. See if she has any other games or hobbies in common with them while waiting for a game. Once she's established among them, it would be easy to ask her to join if any of them get into a new campaign that's looking for players. Jane can come to her own conclusions about who she gels with too. I'm speaking from experience, after an ex-friend excluded me from DnD and their social circle for a long time. Took a good friend who emotionally supported me in their work friend discord group to finally get into a game. Now I'm planning to play Minecraft with their work friends too. : ]

Your comment about “what he’s doing with (OP’s) character” at the end of the first story is a question I ask myself morbidly on occasion when I think about the nightmare DM I had for PF1e, and my cleric. Then I remind myself that the character wasn’t really even mine after the first game I played him in, for a multitude of reasons, and that I’ve been working to effectively “reclaim” the character (new design, back to the original concept before any “backstory aid” I got from that DM, which was just him tricking a new player into having their backstory connect directly to the events of a game he ran, that said new player was never part of at all). It’s generally a better idea to, not find out what problem DMs are doing with characters after the player leaves. I saw what happened to several myself, with players I both heard about AND PLAYED ALONG SIDE, and it was, a wild ride

Worst part of BG3 has to be when there in an enemy on a ledge above you that is attacking you, but you cant hit him back because when you "hover" "over" him, the camera centers on the floor, making him untargeteble, so you have to move around in such a convoluted way. Two places stand above the rest being in the Goblin camp with the guy on top of the rafters, and in the foyer in Moonrise Tower with three guys on the rafters.

Definitely agree on letting players steadily grow their characters into powerful builds on their own terms, and that power is relative. Everyone has their role/s in the party. I'm currently in a Pathfinder campaign right now where I specialize in crafting, and I can definitely say nothing makes me happier than seeing the rest of the party being awesome with the gear I made for them.

People putting down ranges makes no sense to me because you can do so much with them! The first ever D&D character that I created was a Tiefling Ranger with a Sharpshooter feat she became a formidable opponent. She also became the party's scout since our group didn't have a Rogue and my Ranger performed that job great, if even better than our Rogue DMPC that came to the party later, though the DM never underplayed my Ranger at any point. Sniping things was her favorite past time.

I am an illustrator and had done lots of commissions for characters, so I knew a bit about dnd and pathfinder and other ttrpgs from either the details and backstory people gave for character design and from doing research for props, weapons, items, class, race and clothing from source materials to be able to make a good design that fit in the world. So even before I played any game, I already had an idea of ttrpgs and was so excited to play. I joined a pathfinder game, sculpted 2 minis of my kitsune character in human disguise and fox for and drew art for both forms, designed her weapons, a character turnaround (front, side, 3/4, back) for each, and offered to draw the other players charcters in black and white, shaded, for free, and if they wanted more I'd give them a discount on my rates. out of the seven people one girl took me up on it for her character, and the dm who wanted art of the bbeg and some npcs and even paid for full color and back grounds. no one else, and was a little surprised because people usually paid me for it so I was expecting them to let me do it for the whole party so we all had an idea of what our characters looked like, specially since it was free. I still had a great time with them, went on awesome adventures, we all played for around two years until I moved to another country and couldn't meet irl anymore.

Man, story 3.. back story first? For a new player? Nah, man, backstories are a sauce, amazing, and give context but not immediately needed. When I've helped a new player I have two approaches. One do they have a favourite character or b if they role-playing or draw do they have an OC. I help them build that, once they fit back stories can bwb built up during play. If you have one already great amazing even. : 3

Takes no time to set up really and then we just get into it. It’s fun fast and great. However, for more rules heavy games yeah, it’s hard to make it casual.

I have... not so much a horror story as a fun story of the (in game) party falling completely apart. This was a couple of decades ago, so I may not have all the details 100% right, but... The system was GURPS. The setting was a fairly typical fantasy world. The players were mostly middle-aged (I think I was the youngest adult in the group, at 20 something), along with a few of their kids. The relevant characters were me, a tiny little beast master who typically rode her pet bear (with a specific flaw that basically boils down to "can't lie my way out of a wet paper bag", partly because I tend to be like that in real life); the wizard (who was secretly evil, and who had a spell called "death touch", which is pretty much what it sounds like, that he'd gotten to the point that he could basically cast it for free); a standard fighter type played by one of the kids, I think he was about 12; and a thief (who I think was played by the fighter's older brother, but he's only tangentially relevant to the disaster). We were trying to hunt down an evil lich, who was possibly the daughter or reincarnation or something of a previous evil lich. Relevant events that had occurred up to this point: At some point when I wasn't paying as much attention as I should have (it was a large group, and I had a bad habit of falling asleep sometimes), the fighter was gifted this apparently ordinary rabbit by a deity, and told to take care of it. We found this nifty magical armor that had belonged to the previous evil lich. The fighter was wearing the armor part, which was basically +3 or whatever body armor, and the wizard was wearing the helmet, that had a lot of special powers, including the ability to call up an impenetrable cloud of darkness that only the person wearing the helmet could see in. So, we defeated the evil lich. We were kind of standing around, figuring out what to do next. This hippogryph rider comes by, and asks what we're doing. We explain about the whole "defeating the evil lich" thing. The rider asks something about the armor. My compulsively honest character tells him all about it. The rider tells the group that his people are going to come back and take the armor to put it somewhere safe. The group had been planning on keeping the armor, but weren't willing to fight the hippogryph riders about it, so they decided to give it up. But the wizard wasn't having it. And he decided that if he was going to have to fight the riders, he wanted the whole suit of armor. Rather than, say, asking for it, he decided he'd kill the fighter and take it. So, he summons his impenetrable cloud of darkness, and goes to attack the fighter. After his first attack, the rabbit jumps on the wizard's chest. Suddenly, though the fighter can't see anything else, he *can* see the wizard. So the wizard decides he'll deal with the rabbit first, then get back to the fighter. He throws up this bubble shield, basically--nothing in, nothing out, not even light. Then, he goes to death touch the rabbit. The player rolls a critical failure. GM rolls something for his critical failure table, and announces that the wizard used the spell on himself, instead. So, from the point of view of the rest of the party, there was a cloud of impenetrable darkness, then a little bubble of impenetrable darkness, then a dead wizard with a rabbit on his chest. The (IC) group stopped making jokes about rabbit stew after that point. And, while all this was going on, the thief found 2 of the 3 special treasures, nabbed them, and left. My character, worried that the rest of the group would somehow retaliate for making them give up the fancy armor, found the third special treasure (a tiny dragon, to be one of her beasts), and also left. So, a group that was able to cooperate perfectly well for the "hard part" (killing the actual lich) fell *completely* apart basically the moment they were done.
