I mean choices where made that took the chance of choice away. It looks and feels bad what happened to Aimee but clearly she was set up for the script and DM honestly gave her way more leeway for not killing her friends than both Matt or Brendan would have. What im hearing is that DnD Beyond doesnt want my money anymore. I already refused to buy digital books because I buy physical books and im not paying twice. So, if I cant get individual items anymore for a buck or 2, then you get no digital money at all. And ill look to move to a different online tool

@@fighting_nerdyWait, D&D still doesn’t offer free digital copies of their material when you buy the hardcover versions? I’m genuinely asking. That’s wild! I gave 5e a run when it first came out but it quickly became clear it wasn’t the system for our table, so we went back to PF1 & D&D 3.5. We hopped on PF2 when it came out and now that’s our primary system. I’m in total agreement with the both of you; the idea of paying for the same thing twice is absurd. I know Pathfinder isn’t for everyone, but Paizo still deserves credit for their subscription service, where if you purchase the physical copy you receive a free PDF copy (that gets updated with any errata if necessary). I remember back in the day folks were upset WotC didn’t provide free digital copies with a physical purchase, but I had assumed that glaring omission was long gone. Even most movie companies still pack their physical copies on Blu-Ray with digital versions of the film. Wild indeed!

My guess is they are removing all of this because the next edition the plan is that if you buy a book you get the on line book It might only be through the site. The thing with Critical role, I was calling that they would have multiple parties with this campaign, with the eventuality that they would meet up. We keep having more cast members being added as “guests” but these guests keep coming back. I think that we are looking at Dorian replacing Sam as a whole. The idea that we have an entire other pool of players, leads me to believe this is how the main cast will take a step back, be it character death, or a new campaign all together. These players will rotate in and out based on current events. With the OG cast of crit roll cycling out of the main story. The fact that they were doing a big push for Dorian apparel and dice last night before the show stated already told me that Dorian was coming back as a main cast member. I would imagine that this whole campaign is gearing us up for the eventuality of crit roll moving away from dnd 5e and leaning more onto dagger heart as it’s completed. The world of exandria will never be the same and things will change because of it. Also, with all of the Dorian Murch prior to the episode even starting, tells me this part at the very least was scripted.

That attitude is so weird to me, though perhaps from a slightly different direction: I've been consuming media right alongside fan-created versions of the original content for decades. This means that I am basically *never* bummed out anymore when my favorite whatever does a thing I don't like (which of course happens frequently), because that's just an excuse to dive back into, and quite possible WRITE, fan fic! Which I often at this point enjoy as much or more than the original IPs. I can highly recommend this way of life for the following reasons: 1. it's basically endless free entertainment 2. you get the profound satisfaction of actually creating things, as well as supporting (with feedback, and in some cases financially, e.g. permitted-by-CR puchasable fan art on a small scale) other small creators 3. it is a top-notch way to connect with other weirdoes who are into the exact same weird aspects about your weird niche thing that you are. Really and truly - stop taking "Official Canon" so damned seriously! Enjoy it when it's "good" (to you), and when it's not, well, smash it to pieces and put it back together the way YOU want it.

@TimpanistMoth_AyKayEll the issue i was referring to is people up in arms that the players at the table didn't play the game or make the choices they would have done. And on top of that, they got mad that Matt did a "mean while, here's what's happening elsewhere" moment. A lot of us wanted Robbie to rejoin the group. Liam keeps mentioning his character. A side story was needed to bring him in more naturally. Now, as to your long-winded response, i'm not against fanfics... but too many people think their version is more cannon than what IP creators put out for us, and thats never gonna be the case.

Loved last night's session. The feeling of losing and not just losing but failing to save those you are with sucks but the dice told a story. It was heart breaking to watch Opal's memories disappear and then to see Morrighan get shattered when she fully saw what was happening. Heart breaking but great storytelling. Aabria's DM style is fine. She was working with two people who normally don't play RPGs. Those folks need to calm down. After Thursday's episode, I honestly felt as if Aabria's bad habit is railroading the PCs she sits down to play with. That's one. Two is breaking from what Dorian's spell actually did, "because narrative goals." Three, taking way too long on the back-and-forth between Opal and Lloth, which is not how Lloth is, if you have read any of the Bob Salvatore books. Lloth would have literally just used Opal to kill off the Crown Keepers, similar to how Delilah is still thought to want to use Laudna. The difference is, Lloth is a Chaotic Evil goddess, Delilah is a failed necromancer who got beat not once, not twice, not three times, but got beat four times by two different groups. That said, it's gonna be interesting to see where Dorian fits in to Bell's Hells now, given one part of the main group dealt with that village on Issylra, when they saw the tyranny of organized religion. At the same time, even Dorian can understand that preserving the gods is the only way to preserve the world, which is why I don't think he's gonna become anti-god, rather, I think he'll become an anti-hero even more than Ashton. As for Sam, this is the hardest thing to predict. Why? One, Sam IS NOT coming back as Scanlan. Matt has said at different numerous times that once a campaign finishes, he, not the cast member that created the PC, takes control over prior PCs. This is a fact that seemingly everybody has forgotten, with the only exception being, of course, Betrand Bell in the beginning of C3. That exception may exist because Bertrand was not a main campaign PC, being created specifically for the "Search for Grog" and "Search for Bob" one-shots. That said, it is very hard to see Sam not coming back for the remainder of C3. He wants to play this game with his friends. That said, when Tary came in after Scanlan left at the end of "A Bard's Lament" in C1, it was a complete shocker. Nobody expected a pseudo-rich-kid who was gay and had family issues to come in, and by the end of his arc, win over cast and viewer base alike. But Sam pulled it off. That said, I would love to be a fly on the wall between Liam and Sam as they hash out what Sam's next character is gonna be.

@@robertivey7644 : Because divine magic is having issues. A Titan's power would not be enough, as BH would need a cleric like Pike to perform True Resurrection. Even then, the chances are even smaller, given the utter destruction of FCG's body. My guess is, if FCG makes a return, it will be as a reward from the gods for stopping Predathos, just as I suspect the Raven Queen may grant Keyleth the companionship of Vax for her aid as well. But all of this presumes and hinges upon the fact that BH survives and succeeds in dealing with whatever grand scheme Ludinus has initiated using the various Keys. In that regard, Ludinus may, as I have long suspected, be using Dunamancy as a sub-form of Chronomancy to Fate-Shift Exandria to a parallel reality where the gods never existed. In that case, no resurrections would be possible, even for a mechanical War-Forged like FCG.

That's not an attack on her as a person, it's a disagreement with how she runs the game (an hour and half for 2 rounds of combat? Come on.) Ok, I understand that its not ideal that DnDBeyond took away buying bits and pieces. But it just isn't a very valid complaint. Especially from all those saying they only buy real books anyway. In the history of DnD, has anyone ever been able to buy a single sub-class, feat, or item? No. So, what a lot of you are saying is that nothing really changed for you. Just like the first 46 years, you'll have to buy the whole book if you want something from it. For people like me, who just got heavily into DnD this year, all my books are digital. And I'm not upset about it. Also, as most do, only one person needs the digital books. Then make a campaign and share the damn books. Share the cost between your party. Especially if only one player wants a specific thing. Then make that person buy it. This is not the tragedy many are making it out to be.

Given that (while I repect his skills) Sam is my personal least favorite main cast member (hey, somebody's gotta be!) and I quite like Robbie, I am perfectly content with recent CR developments. On a more general level, I continue to like and support that they're switching up formats with EXU, different guests, and whatever else. And I've never cared that much about how the actual plot of CR develops. See, if I want things to have happened differently, that itch is EXTREMELY easy to scratch - in the event that nobody else has written the perfect (for me) fan fic yet, I'll just do it myself! And get the extra benefit of exercising my creative muscles, myself, as well as discussing my tiny niche preferences in exhaustive detail with others who are into the same very niche ideas (which is how nerds make friends). Win - win - win all over, if you ask me.

If anyone plans to buy into WotC platforms like Beyond, they should know they will be playing by WotC/Hasbro rules, and that means maximizing shareholder value first, way ahead of satisfying the userbase. The only thing users can do to change that is leave en masse, but even that can cause them to simply drop projects instead of improving them.

@@reedk2402 sure it's possible. I just find it very unlikely. As a 'forever DM' of 47+ years, who also has training and experience in theatre, radio, and public speaking, it would not be a good idea. Unless Mercer artificially extends the story to allow for more, the time for the audience to get to know the character enough to care about it is likely too short. That makes that character too 2-dimensional (for reasons too varied to get into here) and more of a liability to them story/show than an asset. Coming in as Scanlon or Veth has at least one of its own risks: a deus ex machina that could rob the party of their collective spotlight and agency as the heroes of this story. Robbie filling the 7th seat as Dorian might be the best compromise move we can expect.

Thinking it's time to drop my twitch sub. Kinda sad for me, since I've been a constant subscriber since the G&S days. Campaign 1 and 2 were great. EXU and Campaign 3 just feel way too forced and honestly, uninspired. The chair swapping of the last two episodes is just the straw that broke the camel's back. I realized that I honestly don't care about the story and most of the characters.

Same here. I've lost interest in this bloated and overly-ambitious narrative. I've basically just skimmed through the last 3 episodes without really being engaged or interested and I completely skipped the ExU parts. I realized pretty early that the moon trip was gonna be a slog and I lost complete interest after it dawned on me that Dorian's return had been soured by both it and "the switch" in episode 92. I'll stick to rewatching the first two campaigns until C4 starts. I don't have high hopes that it'll be any better considering the changes made to the structure of this campaign will most likely stay. I think their creativity has gotten the better of them. I don't think they'll ever go back to just being 8 friends around a table playing D&D, with the occasional guest player coming in for a fun session every 30 episodes. Critical Role is no longer fun and I'm starting to realize it hasn't been fun for quite some time.

Thanks for engaging. Thumbnail is fairly explanatory and indicates a couple different things that would not have been expected. No, I have yet to see the episode, but in seeing the thumbnail… I immediately felt like things were spoiled. Just the phrase “Dorian evil arc???” lets me know that Dorian has returned and is possibly going in an evil direction, at least enough to warrant three question marks. That’s pretty big news, man! I tend to try to stay away from your releases, until after I’ve caught up with the episodes that you’re talking about as you cover plot lines as they unfold. Most of the time though, the specifics are not right in the thumbnail that strongly. If I’m off base, you can disregard. It seems obviously spoilery to me.

Spoiler Comment. I usually do not mind Aabria's style- it's not my favorite, and I wouldn't want to join a game with her, but having her on as a guest DM never bothered me before. This last arc really got on my nerves, though. It felt like a DM crossing over from "I am going to challenge you and play these bad guys like they want to win" to full-on "I have to win." The worst offense came last night, and though it was a small thing, it encapsulates what I get frustrated by. Robbie used the spell Chromatic Orb. It is a level 1 spell with a very specific use and clear rules. You roll to hit one target--successful, do your damage. Because he chose to go with Thunder, being thematic with his class as a bard and an Air Genasi, Aabria decided that that is a "More spread out damage type" and had it damage his brother, which played a role in his death later. That is not how the spell works, nor is there anything in its text to suggest it does--that was an in-the-moment interpretation that only served _her_ goals, not the players. Not cool. If I were a player with a DM doing that, I would not return for the next session. It is one thing if a player misreads a spell and makes a bad choice-by all means, make them responsible for reading and understanding how their spells work. In this case, he did use the spell exactly the way it works, but she added more to it that not only worked against the way the player (and certainly the character) would have gone through using it, but she did so because she was aiming for a specific outcome. It took away agency; it actually cheapened the moment because it no longer felt natural or earned, and it highlights that tendency of Aabria to bend (or break) rulings to serve her goals without first running it by the table--not something I tolerate personally. That said, there's no excuse for people to be toxic, but I would understand anyone broaching reasonably worded complaints or critiques.

When Aabria asked if she should be 'mean' about it after Robbie described the spell. Robbie, in his own words said 'Be fair, but mean'. He gave Aabria the call to be mean, as long as it was fair. I feel like it would have been fair if she asked and gave Robbie a chance to say no after she described the situation. But that's my only gripe, honestly. Allowing Robbie to cast Geas and disregarding the casting time and distance to give Dorian a narratively amazing exit from that field was probably her own way of apology for it 😅 But i definitely agree that there's no need to be toxic about it. Hopefully Aabria and Robbie talked about it with no hard feelings remaining.

just goes to show Aabria sucks at her job, sorry...I just, I tried..I watched all of EXU and I hated it, I just CANNOT understand how people accept her way of story telling. She makes combat scenarios so unnecessarily long and drawn out, guys I LOVE watching 1 person take 40 minutes to do 1 turn, I get it Aimee chick doesnt play alot of Dnd..it show throughout all of EXU, but dam her and Aabria are a really awful fit together. If you replaced BOTH of them, or simply aabria with several other prominent DM's, show would of been vastly better. If this is CR'S future going forward then I'm totally done, I hate these side stories, I hate these guests except well robbie hes amazing...but I am here for the main cast, and the stories they create, it just feels like to me they have gone out of their way to alienate the very people who supported them during their crappy audio/camera lay outs of C1, experiment of C2.. For just mindless drools.

Artifice has taken over. The need for it to be a show has swamped other concerns. We came for nerdy voice actors playing D&D, not set design, not "production value," and certainly not costumes. Each new thing they do takes it further and further away from friends playing a game around a table, and it is now costing them audience. I love the idea of rotating game masters, and creating their own system and setting, but I cannot stand their new series because of the artifice surrounding it. I loved Liam's turns behind the screen on the main show, I even loved Travis' turn as "Grog the DM" playing "Dungeons and Flagons" with other members of VM. And I even enjoyed Marisha running Honey Heist. The EXU experiment was 60/40 for me. Loved Brennan's turn, and loved getting to see Matt play a character and Ashley & Liam get some center stage time. I even value getting to see Aabria's style on display (even if it clashes with my own so very much) because we learn by exposure to new things, and I did learn from watching her run. But, you can only do a thing for so long before you want something new, and boy do they want something new. They are now on the same trajectory as G&S: fancying themselves distributors of other content creators work, and pivoting into a production company with several projects in the works (because that is the best way to ensure you can always get work in Hollywood). And most of them have "make your own work" bona-fides from their early internet days to make a go of it. CR could be the next Amblin Entertainment, or Lucas Arts, or View Askew. Only time will tell.

I remember people bemoaning the fact that they had to spend 30 bucks to buy a Complete book to get access to just one feat, spell or Prestige Class. The more things change, the more they stay the same! In all honesty, I am kind of surprised that they are cutting this subsystem out, as it was effectively a micro transaction, which is something WotC will be leaning into with the VTT. I do think their prices were probably too low. The goal should be to allow you to buy something but always push you up towards buying something more expensive. Like, buy a spell for 4 dollars, buy all the spells for 15, buy the whole book for 40.

Secondly, do they understand we maybe have like 40+ more episodes to go? Stuff can happen. Not all stories have happy endings. People whine that it's scripted, but when stuff goes off the rails, they get mad about that too? Well, it's not scripted people! Stuff happens! People make choices.
