For reference (from the Serenity RPG source, iirc) Firefly is set in a single five-star cluster. There is no FTL or other practical interstellar travel, everything takes place in this one system. It's something of a jackpot discovery as far as the survival of humanity was concerned as it had dozens of planets and over a hundred moons that could be terraformed for human compatibility.
@bertimusprime7900
@bertimusprime7900 29 күн бұрын
From just the show and movie, i thought it was a single highly dense system since they reference moons and planets and the core, but not different suns.
@sharkdentures3247

Really? That really cool. I never played the RPG, so the best I could discover (on my own), as far as "maps" of the Firefly-verse goes, was that it was (at most) a Binary star system. Or a NEAR-binary star system? (like two stars "orbiting" each other, but at a significantly bigger distance than a normal binary system. Like if you took OUR solar system, Xeroxed it, and placed the photocopy next to it without causing ANY of the planetary orbits to overlap?) But yeah, a solar system (or solar system "cluster", if you are correct) with a LARGE "habitable zone", DOZENS of planets, and HUNDREDS of moons? That is absolutely a Lottery winning, real estate windfall, bit of luck for humanity!
@dancampbell189
@dancampbell189 29 күн бұрын
From the RPG... Their terraforming capabilities include gravitationally compressing gas giants until they become dwarf stars - at which point their moons become planets. I might be confusing this with some particularly well-written fan fiction, however

The movie exposition-dumps this in the classroom scene. It seems like it was going to be dribbled through seasons two and three, but they needed to point it out early to make the film work. It's one of the reasons why space feels cramped. With no FTL, there are lanes that most ships take from one planet to another, and they might run close to each other.

Probably because Nathan Drake shares quite a bit of traits with Mal from Firefly. And there's some physical resemblance as well. The engine kick is one of the most iconic scenes form this series. So much so that it got referenced in a deleted scene from Serenity. The engine kick was when I was fully sold on Mal. That's an actual anti-hero. Not the fake, stupid kind that Hollywood keeps creating. Mal is brave and generous and he will be merciful...up to a point. Then he will straight up shoot you in the back before he'd let you hurt him or anyone he cares about. Screw honor.

I really do appreciate how they treat the Alliance in this series. Average soldiers and officers are just normal people, doing their jobs. We see that a lot in the Bushwhacked and Ariel episodes too. Like Longman said, it really is refreshing to see the menacing government opposition in a story like this portrayed more as just that, a government. In the first episode, we see the Captain of the IAV Dortmunder acting exactly as he should be. Investigates a derelict ship, even thinks to check for survivors. Finds illegal salvagers, and moves to take them into custody. Gets word of a distress call from a passenger ship, abandons pursuit and goes to help them instead, because that takes priority. Then in this one, these are just a group of soldiers being transported from place to place with a medical shipment. They don't do anything overly aggressive during the heist, and they even stick around to maintain order until they're recalled. Even the ones who recall them, I can't think of any good reason why they'd allow a military unit to stay there longer than necessary, so I don't even fault them for that. "Enemies" being competent and responsible is not only a fantastic way to create more from any given story (higher stakes, better conflict, more drama), but it also helps make the setting more believable. Sure, it might've been a typical western if Mal and Zoe had gunned down a few and left victorious after learning they never planned to give the medicine to the town anyway, or something like that, but it wouldn't have given us this fantastic story with a lot more value to it.

A crotical clarification about the accusations of racism and abortion! Ray Fisher didn't like that Whedon asked him to say "whack" during the Justice League reshoots. As in, the writer wrote the actor's lines and the actor didn't like the lines. And then he called it racially based abuse. Some other people might call it asking an actor to do their job, that is deliver lines as written. Up for interpretation. Charisma Carpenter waited until all the pre-production and writing work was done for the next season of Angel, before revealing that she was halfway through her pregnancy and will be showing for half the shoot and inavailable for the latter half. This is why that season of Angel was so badly written, not only did they have to rewrite it from scratch at the last minute, dropping all the hard work the writing room had been doing for months, but they also wouldn't have one of the stars available for half the season. For the record, Whedon DID NOT try to get Charisma to have an abortion, but once she told him that she was pregnant and had been sitting on that information for a couple of months, months during which he and the writers' room had been toiling away in futility due to her deception...well, at that point he blurted out a confused "Are you keeping it?" I, for one, can understand that he woukd be shocked at her behavior so much that he'd say something like that in confusion. After all, she had been a long-time professional collaborator of his, having worked on Buffy together, as well as on Angel. It must have been a jarring shock to have a coworker behave in such an unprofessional way and conceal her unavailability from you at such a pivotal time in production. Note that Whedon had never tried to persuade her to have an abortion, that is malevolent misinterpretation of the facts and a case of broken telephone. Try and find any interview with Charisma where she says that! She recounts the facts as I have here, and them stops, leaving an insinuation of something more, but not saying anything of the kind, because that would be the basis of a slander lawsuit, as well as libel for the media that ran such an interview. Because it's not true and didn't happen in such a way. He had just blurted out a stunned question in shock and then moved on. If he had done what people are saying he did, then she could just make such a claim freely, now that the Whedon witch hunt has succeeded. But she isn't saying anything of the sort, cause she knows she'd get beaten in court way harder than Heard did.

I believe that she also got a prominent cross tattoo, something that the character wouldn't do, resulting in a verbal dressing down. Basically very few people that worked with him have had bad things to say about him, several tried to say that they loved working with him and were shouted down for fear of being canceled themselves, no allegations of actual legally actionable misconduct or related lawsuits have been brought against him that I know of. Just checking, I see there's a lawsuit that was just now brought against him saying that he stole the idea for Cabin in the Woods. Whatever, not related to his canceling and doubtful that it'll go anywhere. The pregnancy was halfway through and he wasn't notified until the season's pre-production and story building was done and production was about to begin. In her response to Ray Fisher, she claimed that her representatives tried to reach him several times and he refused their calls. Like many of the allegations from various people, I just have trouble taking stock in this. He refused contact from one of his main stars? Or, her reps tried to contact him but she didn't? Or, they didn't get in the car and drive to the writers room? Or they didn't give his assistant a note? When did she start trying to contact him? How soon after seeing doctors about the pregnancy? It just seems like an excuse to remove blame from herself to me. Not victim blaming her, but it just seems like... he was in pre-production, not hiding away on an island. No one could give him the message? Granted, his response was a jerk thing to say, but I understand the emotion behind it and it was mean but not what I'd consider abusive. More desperate. He seems like he could've used some anger management classes or some guidance in stress reduction in an environment where he was very stressed, himself. Can't think of a perfect Whedon quote but, he seems like "he's an a-hole but he's not... 100% a dick." Certain people really came out of the woodwork when Fisher claimed abuse and racism, but not with anything either devastating or specifically alleged. And, if there was a time to do it, that was the time. Dumping on him suddenly became very safe. but no one did with anything cancellable. And yet... But looking into Fisher's claims, they seem to be either half-baked or pretty reasonable. But he claimed racism and it was the exact right time in America to do so and get someone canceled just for claiming it. If there's any serious allegations of grapes or actual racism or anything along those lines, I've not heard them. He's sometimes a meany and "ruined Zack's vision."

I saw this when it aired and I remember being immediately immersed. Later that week I found a pirate copy so I could rewatch it and take notes. No other episode of anything was as efficient as this one in introducing characters, a setting, and a world. Seriously, rewatch all the interactions and you'll hear a few clunky lines, but none of them are conversations where people repeat the stuff they know for the benefit of the audience. Almost all of it is showing and not telling. For example we see harmony before the job starts, and then a mess when Mal and Zoe aren't there, and that basically shows the audience why they matter. The world is clearly much bigger than just the events on screen. And elements of what would normally be hard scifi, like thoughts about unexpected health effects of planetary terraforming, just get dropped in as asides. Seriously, the sheer density of information that there is for careful viewers blew me away. I remember thinking "damn, I think I'm gonna love this show!" - but I couldn't have guessed how right I would be.

For clarification. The entire series is in a single solar system. The Earth that Was was the human home world, humanity had to flee they found a new solar system with lots of plaents and moons. The planents and moons were terraformed, the inner planets got the best effeot but as the terraformimg resources dwindled the outter planets got more patched jobs. The lesser quality terraforming, including climate, atomsphere and synthetic gravity; results in the environmental diseases seen in some episodes
@MandoWookie
@MandoWookie 29 күн бұрын
I always took it as the inner planets were just terraformed first, thus have had time to develop, have the most people, most infrastructure. Then folk started spreading out through this system, & a lot of the outer planets are still actively being or only partially terraformed. They make mention in the show of colonists heading out in ships, and Miranda in the movie was a world that it's terraforming 'failed' as recently as a decade ago, suggesting they are still actively terraforming new worlds. It's also strongly implied the Alliance deliberately deliberately hampers development of these worlds past basic habitability as a control measure. They use they outer worlds for resources but also keep them dependent on the Alliance for critical things.

The solar system has multiple suns, each of which has multiple planets. It probably wouldn't be possible in reality, but the fictional scenario allows for many planets without FTL travel.

@PeakVT i can't believe I never noticed the multiple suns before. I always thought they just ballooned the systems gas giants into mini stars and used that to hand wave the livable temprature of the outer planets
@alexhayden219
@alexhayden219 21 күн бұрын
@@NoskcajLlahsram There's a central sun (White Sun) with its own solar system (Core Worlds), and several suns beyond that with their own solar systems. Some of those solar systems orbit the central solar system, but not all. There's also gas giants that were terraformed (helioformed) into dwarf stars with their own orbiting bodies. They all form a star cluster. A way to understand it is that it's, in concept, similar to how Alpha Centauri actually is, just on a massive scale with hundreds of orbiting bodies and several asteroid belts, etc.

I'm so happy you guys are covering this show. I watched your episode one video and realized it's been a few years since I binged out on Firefly. Fun fact: Did you know that Captain Malcolm Reynolds was originally written for Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris on Buffy). He'd agreed to it and everything but then Fox changed the scheduling to push up the premier 6 months so he couldn't do it because he was still filming Buffy. Another fun fact is that Joss Whedon sang and played the guitar for the theme song and sent it out to all prospective singers to make sure they got it right. On the Blu Ray of the series, you can hear Whedon's version. Kinda wished he had just done it himself because it's pretty good. This episode is a great one. It's not my favorite but it really gets the show going. As you guys mentioned, Fox F'd around with the order of the episodes. They really messed around with the order. Just the first five episodes were 1) Episode 2, 2) Episode 3, 3 Episode 6, 4) Episode 7, 5) Episode 8. And ON TOP OF THAT, they left three GREAT episodes unaired; Trash (which is one of my favorite episodes. Can't really say much about it without spoiling but it's great), THE MESSAGE (all caps for Drinker) which was one of the more bizarre episodes but still great and Heart of Gold which was one of the few episodes that really focused on Elina. Okay, I've babbled enough, I'm going to watch your vid now. Thanks guys!

I think the best analogy for Joss Whedon is the stereotype of the overly temperamental, perfectionist head chef of a kitchen, like the character Gordon Ramsay plays on his American cooking shows. Joss seems to have only ever flown off the handle when people screwed up his vision, like James Marsters' character Spike becoming too popular, or Charisma Carpenter becoming pregnant, or Michelle Trachtenberg's acting skill not being up to snuff in Buffy, making audiences dislike her character early on.

Firefly isn't galaxy spanning. It is a single star cluster, with a few main central stars, and a bunch of outer stars, with lots of planets and moons in various states of terraforming. The Central Planets are the alliance because they are all close together all the time, so are easy to travel between. The rim stars are much further out, so the distance between the different star systems varies a whole lot and travel is much harder.

I accidently tuned into this premier episode part way through, and seeing that armor, was elated by the belief that I was looking at an adaptation of Starship Troopers, one of my favorite movies at the time. The let-down when I worked out that it wasn't Starship Troopers was profound, and I ignored the series for a while in a bit of a huff. At some point I tuned in again in the right frame of mind, and wow. So glad. It's a beautiful blend of comedy, action, war, crime, drama and horror.

With regards to the comment on the SA80 in an American show, there could be a few reasons. Firstly, bullpups (in general) look more futuristic. Most of the guns in HALO are based on a bullpup design where the magazine and the bolt carrier group (BCG) are behind the trigger, making for a more compact package. The other consideration is where it was filmed and what they could get their hands on. Sometimes, with firearms, it can be a very long and tedious process if the firearm isn't already over there. Jack Carr went on to the "Unsubscribe Podcast" and they briefly talked about the process. I guess for a show that is coming up they need to get paperwork submitted now, even though filming isn't for another 6 months, it just takes that long to get things sorted, so a similar thing could have happened for Firefly.

On the 86 million miles thing... you can tell that there was a change or uncertainty about whether the colonies are all in one solar system or it's interstellar. It appears that it was initially all supposed to take place in a single solar system where there were many moons (probably orbiting several gas giants). The opening narrations go back and forth between the two.

It is supposed to be a multi-star system, with each star having several planets and moons. It wasn't really fleshed out directly on screen, but there's a few glimpses of it on computers scattered through the show and movie. Most of the info on it was presented external to the show though.

One thing I've always remembered that Whedon said about Buffy was that Xander was his self insert character, by which I assume he meant that Xander is a massively idealized self insert, because I really doubt high school Joss Whedon looked anything like Nicholas Brendon, or at least, the way he looked back then.

52:00 It's true that people do reach creative peaks, and then make progressively worse stuff as they try to recapture their glory days. But I can't help thinking, Fox's decision to cancell both Angel and Firefly might have thrown him, especially with Firefly. There he was having created a great show, which he knew was both great and full of potential, and then he had to put up with all the nonsense Fox threw his way. Something like that might have sabotaged his later efforts.

As it was brought up early here, going back into the archives as it were, and seeing where popular shows got their start, or how shows drew inspiration from what came before, I'd be really curious to see Drinker's and MauLer's takes on Max Headroom. That was a show that was well before my time, but I recall watching it either in the 90's or early 2000's and thinking a lot of the story ideas still held up. I think, had the show been created in the 2000's, instead of the 80's, it might even have gotten a longer run than 14 episodes (unless it was on Fox.)

I was hooked from the very start watching this episode air on TV. Great characters, fun adventure, and turning the trope of the "guy constantly on the heroes' heels." The opening backstory/premise intro before every episode adequately filled in the overall story from the first pilot. It's a very Star Warsy "used universe" feel and interesting melding of cultures. The only criticism about the world building is the actual physicality of the universe. It was all played very loosely in the series, but the movie says it takes place all in one star system with hundreds of habitable moons. For a guy like Whedon who knows sound doesn't travel in the vacuum of space, him and the other writers don't seem to grasp other concepts of space and the universe. I guess also in Star Wars fashion, they really don't delve into the tech that makes the show possible. Probably a safe bet on their part.

In regards to there Firefly/Serenity is set, "The Verse" is a complex star system with multiple secondary/tertiary stars orbiting around a main massive white sun, each with planets orbiting around them in their own goldilocks zones. As far as I'm aware, that was never fully fleshed out in the original Firefly, although was the intention, with "official" maps only created post Serenity.
