It's the show that never got the chance it deserved. Firefly, written by Joss Whedon and released back in 2002, was cancelled after just one season, but has developed a devoted following over the years. Join MauLer and I as we watch the pilot episode and share our thoughts on the show.

Yup, Serenity's rough, heavily used appearance is definitely similar to the Falcon, and the huge, bright and shiny new ships of the alliance are definitely reminiscent of the empire in Star Wars. Mal is definitely a Han Solo stand-in, and Inara is the upper class Leia who constantly insults him but secretly loves him. Kaylee is R2 (the cute mechanic that everyone loves). Simon is definitely 3PO (always worried, a bit annoying, socially awkward). River may well be Luke... just discovering her powers. Zoe and Wash as a pair are Chewie... a good pilot, co-captain, sidekick, and a good fighter. Book is a sort of Obi Wan... a wise older man imparting cryptic words of wisdom. Jayne? I'm not sure... but his character works well as a blunt tool, and as a sort of redemption arc.

This and my obsession with dark souls are the reasons I eventually got into watching let's plays. I never imagined I'd enjoy watching someone else play a game, but then Dark Souls was so special to me that I wanted to see other people experience their own journey. The same could be said for great TV shows and movies. We can never see them for the first time again, so the next best thing is to do so vicariously through others. What I'll say is that Whedon getting canceled was bullshit. Based on what he's been claimed to have done, some of it I don't believe, some of it I think he's entirely justified, and the rest just isn't nearly as bad as what a lot of people that are still working have done. As far as his skills, they're top notch and he (unfortunately) influenced an entire generation of writers that attempt to write in his style and utterly fail.
@adamantaloczy

One of the cool writing device that Joss Whedon said he employed in the series was to flip his characters traits when he wanted to emphasize the tone of a scene. So when Wash, who never stops talking, actually shuts his trap to concentrate on flying, you know things are getting pretty harry. When Jane, who isn't afraid to throw down with anyone, gets scared, you should be scared too. When Zoe the level headed one goes dark... well, you get it.

Kaylee as well, she's got a traditional man's job of ship's mechanic, but she's still very feminine and desirable. She's great at her job, but the show doesn't use that to try to make the male characters look weak. She's strong willed, like when she calls out Simon being mean and bitter in the store in Safe, yet she's soft and inviting, convincing Book to join even though she called him Grandpa, which was a turn-off when a different crew called him the same thing. A very well written, acted and produced show.

This is one of a very few shows that makes me cry at certain points. Like when Simon says to River at the end 'Arial,' "No, mei mei. It's time to wake up." Or when Mal looks off into the distance at the end of "Out of Gas" and sees Serenity for the first time across the scrapyard. Or near the end of the pilot when Kaylee pats the panel in the engine room and whispers, "That’s my good girl." So many moments.

When it ended and I said "OK, now we only have Serenity to watch and it's all done" they were angry because after enjoying it so much. They wanted more. Well, my youngest wanted more. When my eldest's favourite character had his Leaf on the Wind moment he didn't want to watch any more. xD

I am pretty sure this line is a reference to Ender’s Game. In the books he figures out the flight patterns of the insectoid’s ships while watching leaves “tunneling” through the wind on the way to the ground. But it could be coincidence. Also, if you want to see an anime Joss borrowed A LOT from for this series, watch “Outlaw Star”. Plucky captain, Chinese-accented culture, space ships using medieval weapons, and of course, a girl smuggled in with the luggage.

That’s a strange reaction. Fantasy and SF often need time to build the world and character relationships before the action appeals to the masses. Firefly literally does this as well. Episode 1 is setting the groundwork. Some ppl nowadays demand instant gratification and constant highs from what they’re watching and it’s a ridiculous thing to have expectations like that. Sometimes shows/books/films require world-building that won’t appeal to a casual.

@@towerofghenjei On one hand -- yeah, you need to get that setup and payoff for some really awesome shit. On the other, that shouldn't be an excuse to not make a good show. Firefly was canceled after 11 episodes - The pilot (Serenity) was the 11th and final episode aired in the original run. From what I heard explained, the Fox executive that green-lit the show was fired before the show started airing, and his replacement wasn't very interested in having a show his predecessor green-lit be his first hit. Read this somewhere awhile back, but when there's conflict scenes between characters, each character represents Mal's own internal dialogue and struggles: - Zoe is his honor/duty, solider side - Wash is his goofy side - Inara is his heart speaking up - Kaylee is his joy - Jayne is his impulsive, selfish side - Book is his abandoned religious side This is represented so well when the characters are conflicted over what to do when Kaylee is shot... Inara (the heart) growing in intensity : .... Mal? ... MAL!? ... DO IT!!! Mal, not wanting to listen to his heart: "Don't you ever tell me what to do on my ship" Watch the show again with this in mind and it becomes that much deeper.
