Boss Level is pretty much Groundhog Day, only with guns and explosions. And it's surprisingly good fun.

This is the “hamburger” of movies. We all aspire to a four course meal in a fancy restaurant, the Citizen Kane, but more often than not a really good ‘burger is what you want. No frills, no pretentious twaddle. Just something solid, dependable, and entertaining.

While not a four course meal, also definitely more than a burger I would say. I think the limited budget is the only thing that held them back. On the other hand, maybe it was a blessing in disguise, maybe with a larger budget they would have gone way over the top like tends to happen with a lot of movies. To me it was just right.

I *loved* this movie. After seeing it, with it's seeming lack of "the message", with it's actual FUN, I absolutely couldn't believe it had gotten made at all. @SHIBASAURUS REX I can forgive that or let's say, I don't really see it as a little bit of message. They got Michelle Yeaoh who is an accomplished martial arts action star (and they prolly coun't afford a "bigger" name anyway). So, that's okay and doesn't feel forced. Thing is, in the end, after all his training, the "man" defeated the "woman". Something that would never fly in any of "those" other movies.
@Haterator
@Haterator 2 жыл бұрын
@SHIBASAURUS REX Oh yes it does matter in the greater context. She’s not filling a certain quota, because „wahmen“ and „agenda“, no, she actually fits the role of a martial arts teacher, because, well, she is one. That’s important. So the meta message a company tries to push (like e.g. Disney) doesn’t exist. Now, you interpret it otherwise, but there’s no proof that you’re right. I see it differently. Okay, so be it. And yes, the sword fighter was over the top, like every other character in the movie. She is acobatic and dodges bullets, because her character seems to stem from Eastern cinema (Hello „Tiger & Dragon“ and hello, Michelle Yeah again) You can totally buy that. It was a fun idea. She was introduced as a mid-boss (hence the name of the movie by the way) and she acted like one. T You initially said something about „a little message“, but now you just complain about the bulled dodging. So, regarding that logic, if the character had been male, all would have been fine? That’s not how it works.

I literally just watched Boss Level 4 days ago and I loved it, one of the first movies I have liked in a long time. I am also convinced now that you need good narration in a movie to get you into the action. There is just not enough time for a movie to introduce you to the creators, develop a plot and resolve that plot without narration on what the protagonist thinks.

@@flowinsounds Unless it’s poignant, interesting narration then it runs the risk of being try-hardy, clichéd, and lame, which then ends up deflating the whole film. I tried watching Narcos and the narration had me rolling my eyes within minutes. The actor sounded like he was purring his lines, trying way too hard to sound cool and mysterious 🙄. Narration can also get used as a lazy way to market a film to an international audience because you can switch the voiceover easily. Remember “The Mummy”? (The Tom Cruise one). Nah, me neither, but apparently they tried that

@@CursedWheelieBin Ow ya it definitely has to be good narration, a little funny, engaging. I don't know what the trick is to get it like that but once you have it. A Lot of the movies I think are classic use narration throughout; Fight Club, Shawshank Redemption, hell even Lord of the Rings started it off with Elf narration.
@dexine4723
@dexine4723 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, if it's appropriate for the film, narration is a good way to get information across to the audience quickly, and it's far better than Hollywood's alternative methods of either putting long, boring streams of explanatory text on the screen, or subtitles. Just watched Shang Chi, and the long, subtitled Chinese introduction is tedious, despite the action scenes, which you can't concentrate on because you're too distracted by the dratted subtitles! For me, Boss Level did it all quite well. Might even have to watch it again.

I love this movie for what it brings, but also and perhaps, especially for what it doesn’t bring! Boss Level is presented in a way that is completely indifferent to “the message” and just comes across as a genuine action film with a unique and sincere message. The chemistry between Frank Grillo and his son is captivating and it stays with you because it’s real, whereas your brain registers the cgi violence as fake, heading to the “video game” sort of feel that the rest of the movie has. That contrast is what makes Boss Level such a great movie. “Roy’s” life has essentially become a video game. Video games usually distract you from reality, and take up time that you could have spent with the ones you love. A circumstance which countless people end up regretting and wishing they could go back and change. In this case, the “video game” helps Roy get his shite together, recoup some of that lost time, save his family and become the man he desperately wants to be… and all in the span of a single day.

Drinker is the reason I watched The Outpost. What a great movie. I’m really sick of pretentious movies. Like a lot of woke Hollywood, a lot of the later MCU and the overrated piece of sh’t that is Skyfall. I strongly believe that the last great franchise we have is Mission Impossible. Great Escapism. @@TheABElia The main thread, the serial killer plot, is weak. The nazis aren't a fun addition, though the actors try really hard to make it work. 'Hood' isn't sheriff. New sheriff, despite having been hardened by 'Hood', permits blatant corruption in the force. Girl power is through the roof (but not nearly as entertaining). A certain character was made pretty cool in the past only to become useless. One of the biggest WTFs: A room full of nazis is getting obliterated in a fight BUT WE DON'T EVEN GET TO SEE IT. I'm sure I've forgotten problems. It's by FAR the worst season, but I don't regret seeing it through.

@@TheABElia It's been some time but I recall finding it ok. It was a definite drop in quality but it was still enjoyable. They don't retroactively destroy the show. It wasn't like a Dexter or Game of Thrones ending... It was a bit like the 'final' season of another Cinemax show I enjoyed around the same time: *_Strike Back._* (S1 to S5 anyway... with Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester) It also had an ending that's not as good but doesn't ruin the show. At least not until the travesty that was this show's "revival" years later with an entirely new (and terrible) cast + production. They didn't even have the decency to call it a spinoff; they called it Seasons 6-7-8. They pulled a Doctor Who. But ya the *_real_* ending of Strike Back was kind of like Banshee. Not their best seasons but far from terrible.

On the counter behind him, next to the waving cat, is a tall, yellow tumbler with a smiley face on it, and the words, "Have a nice day!" I had one of those when I was a kid! Now, lets say, hypothetically, that somebody once told me that the world would proceed to roll me, and made the claim that I was not, the smartest tool in the shed. Which would lead us to look at the facts and see that she was looking kind of dumb, due to the fact that she had placed her finger and her thumb, in the shape of the letter L, located on her forehead. This would mean that the years would start coming, and logically wont stop coming, that I was, hypothetically, fed to the rules, which would proceed with me hitting the ground running. Which didn’t make sense, to live for fun, in a way that your brain gets smart, yet your head gets dumb, seeing as there’s so much to do, and so much to see, so now I must pose the question, what is wrong with taking the backseat? This is due to the fact that you’ll never know if you don’t go, nor you will shine if you don’t glow. For you see, you are, at this moment, an All-Star, so get your game on, and proceed to go play, indeed, you’re an All-Star, get the show on, which would entitled you to get paid. That would mean that all that glitters, is indeed gold, and that only shooting stars, can participate in the process of breaking the mold.
