More than 100 locals gathered near the rubble of the Crooked House in Dudley on Tuesday, 8 August, to lament the historic pub’s destruction.
The well-known 18th-century pub was extensively damaged by a fire on Saturday evening and was later demolished.
South Staffordshire Council is investigating potential breaches of the law over the total demolition of the pub.
A former landlord of the pub, Tom Catton, said his life would have been very different without the Crooked House.
“It means so much to us this place. This is where I met [my wife.] I proposed to her here," he said.

Sounds a bit dodgy to me... why was the access road blocked to firefighters and why the super quick demolition? Firemen have to check the remains of building to ascertain the cause of the fire before anything can or should be done to the building (especially if it is listed) To do otherwise is a crime and the owners should be taken to court for it.

The fire was clearly highly suspicious, so the building should have been treated as a potential crime scene and as such the police should have been on site to guard any evidence as soon as the fire was out. But they weren’t. Apparently they were sent away due to ‘health and safety’ issues being around an ‘unsafe’ building. That allowed the excavator to move in and do its worst with no opposition from anyone. Something stinks here, from top to bottom.

This has happened quite a few times where I live. An old pub closes, gets bought and then suddenly spontaneously combusts. Then, before the ashes even have time to settle, you suddenly end up with a new block of flats where the pub used to be. At the risk of sounding xenophobic, it's usually foreign property speculators involved in this shady business. They have no connection to the history or heritage of our country, why would they? It was just an old pub, it means nothing to them. They don't care about communities or local pride in a unique landmark. They only care about the bottom line and the land that pub stands on. It's just vandalism for profit.

To be fair though, most of the pubs this happens to are not very memorable, have been empty for ages and it’s so hard to get a “new” pub running at a profit that it usually ends up being converted to some other function, usually a local shop. Not that I’m complaining, we have precious few corner shops and too many derelict pubs, so doing something is better than nothing

@@maalikserebryakovthe amount of housing isn't the issue, there are plenty of vacancies, the issue is the price. You can't live in a house that's unaffordable. Historically prices rise for a bit and then take a bit of crash in price. The longer the rise, the higher the price, the more devastating the crash. The current housing bubble's crash has been delayed for so long that: 1. Comparing average income to average accommodation costs to a few decades back the difference is concerningly expensive, affordable housing isn't really a thing anymore 2. When the bubble does inevitably burst it's going to take everything else with it

From a planning application going in to redevelop the site, to the blocking of the access road, to the fire and then being knocked down with heavy equipment. Smells very stinky in my opinion. I just hope a proper investigation is done as to how this all came about and also the planning department should only allow permission for the original building to be put back up. Considering something very similar happened in our own village with a rectory in 1953, a fire that destroyed and left a charred relic of a grand house that was built in the 1700s whilst the fire appliances were still bunged with mud after pumping out premises in the aftermath of the Suffolk floods. Film of which exists. The owner - 'occupier' - who had not been there very long said to my grandmother, "Oh, you didn't know we were away?" She had actually gone up to the rectory, a woman in her seventies in her dressing gown, being late at night, and the flames were coming out of the attic bedrooms where the servants used to sleep. The place was full of wood panelling. Interestingly, there had been a small fire in the stable block just a few weeks before. People were assured that the rectory would be rebuilt. What replaced it was a bungalow building which eventually housed the offices of an industrial supplies company and the surrounding grounds were turned into into lorry parking, workshops and storage areas. Some rebuilding!

quite clearly an act of arson from the new private buyer, whoever it is should be charged with the crime and forced to pay EVERYTHING from clean up and to rebuild the pub.

Its funny how everytime a big company wants to buy a building that has a pub in it and the owner refuses, it magically catches on fire and burns down and then it gets demolished claiming the fire made it unsafe... and then the big company comes in and buys it. Magical

We clearly don’t hold pubs very dear, though. In the six mile stretch between my house and the nearest big town, I pass 14 pubs. 10 of them are boarded up. Well, nine now, one is being converted after being busted as a weed farm. This is happening all over the country and nobody gives enough of a crap to stop it. We’re all too busy supping our supermarket bought booze and watching the telly…

It's about time they started listing pubs before they are all gone like the thatched cottages I'm surprised the local authority planning department had not listed it! ...They could have easily saved the shell no doubt planning for apartments or houses. I suppose they would have struggled to convert it into flats with it being wonky. A similar thing happened where I live they knocked an old pub down to build an industrial unit despite a big petition.

In total 8,964 pubs have achieved listed building status in England over the years with the first being the Cheshire Cat in Nantwich in 1948. The travesty is this pub was not protected by law and should be a warning to other pubs. Legally new owners will get away with it as they are legally the new owners but morality this act is pure evil.

Development scam. From working in the pub industry any time a developer buys a pub and has planning refused there is an electrical fire. See it happen all the time. 2 in my little town and 6 if you include neighbouring villages since 2021. Look how many pub fires happened when pubs went bust in 2008 too, developers bought the pubs at bargain basement prices, then burnt them down after the first plans were rejected. There's a shocking amount of rejected planning decisions followed by electrical fires.

A few listed and soon to be listed hotels with sea views in Swansea mysteriously burned down in the 80's and 90's. Expensive luxury flats now. There will be a respectful interval of time until people forget and then planning permission will be granted. Nothing will ever be proved regarding the cause of the fire. Surely it is absolutely not OK to immediately demolish a potential crime scene though?
