SPOILER why aren't we talking about Wylan playing flute to his mother and our queen Inej fighting Dunyasha who is some destined royalty and trained mercenary (who sounds like the main character in a normal book) and Inej is just a normal girl who earned her skills and specialities without being born with it, and she thinks like "But what about the rest of us? what about the nobodies and the nothings, the invisible girls? we learn to hold our heads like we wear crowns. We learn to wring magic from the ordinary. that was how you survived when you weren't chosen, when there were no royal blood in your veins. when the world owed you nothing, you demanded something of it anyway." That was like, ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL QUOTES I'VE EVER FOUND IN A BOOK.

Oh god, that was my favourite! I was so afraid Inej would die in that scene. I also see it as a bit symbolic; you don't have to be born a certain way, you can become what you want to be, a better version of yourself. I absolutely loved it!

I'm glad that you mentioned this! I totally agree, and honestly this has been one of the best books I've read. To a good extent it eradicates the 'Chosen One' trope and steers away from the general stereotype. We have all those characters that are never well represented in other books.

Kanej 😭 the point about their relationship not being romanticized is so spot on. What I love is that their romance doesn’t save one another: “I will fight for him, but I can’t heal him. And I won’t die trying”. They respected each other’s baggages and their choices; they will fight for one another, will do anything for one another, and they inspires each other to be better, so better, but they don’t try to fix one another. That is just so beautiful

This book sends so many messages from Nina: Don't do drugs Matthais: Don't see things in only one way develop ideas and thoughts of your own and not just accept what others think is right or wrong. Kaz: Never give up when you have no more options. There are always more options and choices Inej: You never know what a person has gone through. Wylan: Never earn wealth through unmoral ways it will come back to haunt you Jesper: Your family will always be there to support you. Jesper and wylan: Love can come in so many different forms I LOVE THE STORY SO MUCH :)

Wylan: Don't focus on your flaws, everyone has flaws and you can't fix everything to make it perfect. Focus on your skills Jesper: Don't brush everything off. my favorite quote in this entire book is the last scene between kaz and inej, “‘Wait,’” he said. The burn of his voice was rougher than usual. ‘Is my tie straight?’ Inej laughed, her hood falling back from her hair. ‘That’s the laugh,’ he murmured…” because it just wraps up everything about them in the most perfect way and i cant get over it.

The Six of Crows duology is one of the best YA books I've ever read...if not one of the best books I've ever read...It's just...Amazing ly fantabulous..it has everything I could ever want in a book...Morally grey and diverse characters, great writing, amazing plot, good romance, great world building, it doesn't have any tropes as far as I'm concerned. Like, it's just...everything, and it gave me so many feels...Feel galore!!

Kaz stood there, staring at the place she’d been only seconds before. She’d tricked him. The decent, honest, pious Wraith had outsmarted him. He turned to look back at the long expanse of roof he was going to have to traverse to get back to the boat. “Curse you and all your Saints,” he said to no one at all, then realized he was smiling.

Can I just say that this is the *best Crooked Kingdom review ever*??? **spoilery stuff below** OMG you made me cry when you were talking about Matthias (as if the week of crying after I finished the book wasn't enough). Oh my heart. I keep watching reviews because I feel less and less salty about his death each time a person talks about it. The reviews are what made me understand why he needed to go and accept it. The Kuwei/Jesper kiss had me in fits as well! Hilarious! Jesper and Wylan are national treasures. I love that they're the couple that had the happiest ending, if you can call it that. Sml. *ALSO, FELLOW KANEJ TRASH HERE.* 🙋🏻🙋🏻🙋🏻 I love them so much it actually hurts. They give me life!!! That "bandage changing" scene though. Aaaah

Im still in denial over Matthias death. But for me, I feel bittersweet about it. I also how it ended in an open end, like it is the end for these characters but we will see them again. Inej and Kaz figuring out their relationship and Wylan and Jesper in a relationship (the lgbtq characters get the happy ending). A lot of people are saying that Nina and Nikolai should get together and I agree. And I see you go the Inej bookmark/card. (I got Kaz which I really wanted)

I don't know what it was that made it so unbelievably perfect , but I adored Crooked Kingdom! (even more than Six of Crows!) when I read the Grisha trilogy a few years back I liked it but didn't really form an emotional connection to the story or it's characters. Now her dialogue flows effortlessly, her world building is superb and ta-daa there it is, the emotional connection I was looking for! (probably because the characters are the perfect blend of anti-heros and cinnamon rolls) definitely one of my fave YA series of all time!

I've been waiting for all my favorite Booktubers to finally start reviewing this book. I hadn't read anything by Leigh before Six of Crows and I read it about 2 weeks before Crooked Kingdom so I'm in absolute Dregs withdrawal. These books, and Crooked Kingdom in particular, were so stunning! Inej is by far my favorite character but you were so dead on with the plot point discussions. SPOILERS BELOW! I CRIED my eyes out at the farewell to Mattias! Watching the gang say goodbye to one another...I couldn't! I also was so heartbroken at the Colm plot and realizing how young the Crows are and how much they missed out on a family and regular lives. I posted my own in depth review where I go into all my favorite parts of the story and quotes. I cannot believe this is just a duology and we don't get more of them. I absolutely wasn't ready to say goodbye but it was a fantastic send off.

Late to the party, but OH MY GOD! I love all 6 of our characters, for their flaws and their fight to change their game. Matthias and Nina is my ship.😭 I just love that Matthias has changed for the better; how he accepted that he was trained to see the world all wrong and have to continously fight his nature to become someone better. Even in his death, he still has hope for his people to become better, and I loved that Nina was there to carry it out. Their relationship is heartbreaking in the very best way.

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAID! For five years the Harry Potter series used to be my favourite series/book of all times but as soon as I finished Six of Crows (in two days because I couldn't put it down), I was like I HAVE to read Crooked Kingdom. And Oh my god, Crooked Kingdom was better than I thought. The Six of Crows duology is the first time a book has come close to replacing Harry Potter and I think it has but I'm just in denial about it! Also, Matthias!! I wanted to throw my book across the room at that point. My friend had already read the books and I put the book down and messaged her and I was like, I DONT WANT TO READ FURTHER. The Crows are not complete without Matthias!!!!!!!!!!!

I think sometimes people don't realize how much we need representation. I cried many times, reading this book. Chapter 40, of course, made me feel sad. But the times I really cried were the times when I finally felt represented. As a walking cane user and a person triggered by physical touch, Kaz means the world to me. And I know it's the same for people of color, fat people, neurodivergent & dys people, women (women are so great in the grishaverse), queer people... I just feel Leigh Bardugo created this safe place where you can enjoy good stories and good characters, feel at home and, at some point, see yourself in one of her characters in a way you've never seen yourself represented before. I am SO thankful for this duology.

ok did anyone else think that Wylans reading disability was a metaphor for his sexuality?? Like it always struck me as very odd and random detail about him but then when he got with Jesper (AHHH!!) it got me thinking. His father was ashamed of it and made him keep it secret. He tried to hire people to teach him to read (alluding to conversion therapy) and eventually Wylan accepted that part of himself when he was with Jesper!! It makes total sense to me but let me know your thoughts
@MaeAlessa
@MaeAlessa 3 жыл бұрын
Mmm...I think it's a good metaphor but, again I like that even though he's so smart he has something that's not "right" in his brain when in reality there are many types of intelligence. that's what I got out of it but the sexuality metaphor is a good interpretation as well

I really liked Wylan in the first book and his chapters made me so happy he's just so precious and I love that him and Jesper get to be happy and domestic together it's just the best. Oh my god chapter 26 made me SCREAM whilst i was reading it, i wish i had my copy rn but i'm lending it to a friend! and i cried so hard when inej was reunited with her family it was so emotional and perfect and wow i have so many feelings! LEIGH BARDUGO COULD WRITE ANYTHING ON LIKE A DINER NAPKIN AND IT'D BE ART! i'm in a library right now, and it has never been so hard to try to control my fangirling from just watching this video and hearing about ck. i finished it just last saturday and i am so not over it. if i start crying in this library right now, know it's because ck has ruined me and this review is bringing back all the feels i've been trying to contain (but in the best way possible). "it didn't serve any purpose", this is what I´ve been feeling ever since Matthias...and crying again and again, like some stupid girl. It was written beautifully, if death can be beautiful, than it was this one, but I just couldn´t get over it, especially because of Nina, I can still feel her pain. I haven´t been able to enjoy the Inej-Kaz or Wylan-Jesper ending because of that. But seeing you and speaking /or reading here/ those nice things, the other explanations of why it happend makes me feel a little better. I LOVE this amazing books. There is no one in my "real world" who loves books like me, no one who understands crying over a book...so thank you "youtube people" for making me feel normal :) I just Love these books and every one of these characters! I am very sorry for my english, but I had to say something about this book and what it means to me, someone who understands...

SPOILER ALERT: There was a narrative purpose to it. It's debatable if the twist was worth the death, but it was a good twist. Remember Matthias had these visions of Nina fading away like she was dying and he couldn't reach/save her? Turns out she was fading away because he was the one dying.

Hello! I know it's two years since you wrote this, but I have 2 short things to say, even tho you may never read them:)) Matthias' death was overwhelmingly beautiful for me because it wasn't necessary for the plot. That in fact reveals how great Leigh Bardugo is. Death is part of life. So often it just comes unexpected. I am so glad finally seeing a death which isn't sacrificial (those are great too) because this is so realistic and it actually reveals a lot about life/death. also it appears to make sense because of that reference to shadows given my inej. last thing, I am glad you can find community here!!✨

I think this one of the rare duologies that fully encompasses everything. We have six outcasts, a heist, magic, mystery, quick-wit, amazing jokes and even more amazing characters. Leigh Bardugo has tried her best to bring in all those characters and relationships that are usually neglected in other YA Fantasy books. And some of her quotes are mind blowing. I truly, truly loved this series and it was a very refreshing read.

BTW, our snapchat fangirling made my reading experience like 100% better. I vote we do that again with another book.

I've had this video on my watch later for a while and I finally finished Crooked Kingdom today and immediately went to watch this. I completely agree with everything you said, I loved all the characters so much, Inej is honestly the queen of my heart and her and Kaz's relationship put my heart through so much and I was honestly sobbing at the end when he brought her family to her like honestly my heart barely handled it. I just love both of them so much, Inej is such an important character and she is someone who's voice will stay in the back of my mind. I loved Wylan and Jesper and Nina and Matthias (and the scene where he dies had me sobbing) and all of their relationships, like I love how this book had all of them go through their own personal development, but also focused on all the friendships and relationships equally and I honestly need to shut up because I could write a book about all my feelings for this story.

I seriously agree with everything you've said! I just finished reading 'Crooked Kingdom' this week, and came straight over to see your review, as from watching your videos I knew we had pretty similar tastes when it came to books, and I wanted to have my CK feelings reaffirmed! Since I finished reading CK I've literally been unable to think of anything else, and I've been trying to mention it in every conversation I have with people so they read the books! Thank you for fangirling over this duology to the same level that I've been doing so! haha

SPOILER BELOW: 😬😬 Matthias’ death was actually spoiled for me bc I couldn’t resist scrolling through tumblr and looking at different fanarts and stuff 🙄 But even when it was spoiled I still did not want to believe it, so when i got to the point where my boy Matthias died, I was still so surprised, and sad, and I feel like if it wasn’t already spoiled I would’ve FULL ON sobbed (though, I did end up shedding a few tears on the bus)

I honestly had thought that it would be Jesper who died! I found out before, through tumblr as well lol, that only five of them make it but I wasn’t completely sure that it would be a death! So when the Khergund got to Jesper I was sure that it would be Jesper who died and I NEVER expected it would be Matthias, it didn’t even cross my mind! I thought it would be Jesper or Wylan for some reason! But not Matthias, I didn’t expect it at all 😭 and it wasn’t even van Eck or their ‘enemies’ it was one of his own people after their battle had ended

I just finished it this morning. It is one of my favourite books of all time. I love it so so much. But i‘m crying right know because it‘s too early to think about Matthias‘ death. I knew he would die but to read these scenes, which were totally perfect, was so hard. I loved him and Nina and wanted them to be happy so bad. I just tell myself that someday they will see each other again. The ending of this book was so good but also so sad. These characters are like family after all we were going threw with them. Ok i‘m really emotional 🙈 Sorry for my bad english. I‘m from Germany.

I started Six of Crows 4 days ago after I watched your tier ranking video and I just finished Crooked Kingdom. I have NO WORDS! I am utterly changed by these books ... wow. A part of me wants another book (which I know is not going to happen), but I also understand the perfection of the ending. I have already told at least 10 people about this series, and I cannot wait to hear what they think :) Thanks for such an incredible book recommendation!

I have just read this book recently this month. And it was amazing!!! I thought that it was a great way to end in a series. SPOILERS!!! When Matthias died I literally cried! He was my favorite character! I felt like I grew more to his pov. But when that happen I went to my mom like: what just happened! Lol! Anyways... This book was so good. I checked it out as an audiobook! That made me loved it even better I think. My overall rating is:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!😀

i just finished crooked kingdom about 30 minutes ago, and i only started the six of crows duology 3 days ago.. i absolutely adore the characters in these novels and i love the lessons they give while also keeping the book so entertaining. i actually found out matthias was going to die before i had read the book when i was scrolling through reviews for the six of crows novel but it didn’t change how emotional the death was and how impacting and meaningful it was. I loved how many important characters from shadow and bone were mentioned and made appearances in these novels and all of the grisha books may just be my favourite now. i don’t think i’ve ever been more satisfied by the end of a series ever. King of scars is next on my list and i’m soo looking forward to it ! ❤️

Just read this book series because you recommended it in another video and thank you so much for that it was so good, I’m gunna be reading all the other series you recommended now. It’s just weird because Jordie dies of a plague and then at the end of the second book the city is under quarantine which is SUCH a coincidence to be reading during this covid19 pandemic! okay i love how you are also an emotional mess after this book bc i could not handle my feeling at all. it is so hard since none of friends read to not have anyone to scream about how amazing it was. i felt exactly the same way you did like spot on i couldn't believe it. one more scene for me though that was soo powerful was when kaz told pekka that he berried his son and he was begging him to tell him where he was. i honestly felt sick and you really got to see how beautifully twisted kaz was and how far he was willing to take it even though he didn't really harm the kid. this book broke me i don't even know if i can recover. i am going to read the grisha trilogy now and i really hope we see at least some of them in the next series
