Here’s a comparison between an aluminum and steel breech. Chrony test with the 24” barrel in my modified, brand new 362.

I have a Baker aluminum breech, it’s out of spec too. I enlarged the rear screw hole. I managed to get it to fit and seal at TP but it was a bit of a hassle. Same as the Chinese eBay breech. Machine screw wax is still my preferred method to fill breech screw hole. Great video!

Thanks! I’m glad I’m not alone in getting an out of spec breech from Baker. This was the first breech I ever installed on a 22xx style gun with my Drifter and it was so frustrating! I was thinking this is way more complicated than I ever anticipated and it took me a bit to figure out it wasn’t me, but the dang holes weren’t lining up properly. I then contacted Baker and they sent me a different transfer port and replacement screw (the threads got ruined on my stock screw). I was able to get the breech installed after that but I noticed my Drifter than leaked oil out around the transfer port. In any case had I known then what I know now I’d have insisted on a replacement breech or a refund. Baker mentioned egging out the holes back then and I thought then as I do now that I shouldn’t have to do that on a brand new part. But I’m stuck with it now so it’s useless junk unless I drill and/or egg out the holes. The other thing I noticed was that the dove tail is slightly wider on the Baker breech than the Crosman steel breech. A GravMag won’t fit on the Baker breech. Thanks for the info on the Chinese breech and machine wax.👍

It’d be interesting to see what you find! When I watched my video on my TV I noticed my editing while measuring the aluminum breech transfer port wasn’t the best. I did better showing the measuring on the plastic breech.

I put the Crosman steel breech on my 362. It shot the Crosman 14.3 hollow points at about 590 to 600 fps. Unfortunately, I never tested it stock, but I knew that was pretty low. The bolt probe that comes with the steel breech is shorter than the stock one, so I just put a brass tip on it so it would push the pellet all the way past the port (the skirt covered half of the port up). Now it does 650 at 8 pumps, 660 at 9 pumps, and 670 at 10 pumps

Huh! That’s interesting, I think I can check that as I’ve got the stock barrels lying around and plan to order another Crosman steel breech. I’d read about guys getting extended probes but didn’t understand why.

Yeah, I wondered about that before I even got the breech. I don't know why Crosman makes it like that. I was really impressed that yours was doing about 670 to 680 at 8 pumps, maybe the probe on yours is longer.
@elimcgraw4066
@elimcgraw4066 5 ай бұрын
To check it, just have the breech by itself with the barrel mounted in it as it would be fully assembled. Then you can just load in a pellet and look directly at the port

I used the steel breech from Crosman. It fit perfectly. I had issues with the pellets feeding as well. That turned out to be the rear barrel screw not being tight enough. It’s feeding fine now.

I’ve got Crosman steel breeches on 3 different guns, two .22 cal and one .177 and all have hang ups when feeding pellets. Domed pellets feed the most smoothly and you can work around the trait but it’s unfortunate that Crosman hasn’t improved the design to remedy the issue. I really like the steel breech, just have to be aware of the hang up to avoid damaging pellets during chambering.

Don't give up on the Aluminum breech, I think you did find the issue where the transfer port isn't seating correctly, it could be you have the transfer port upside down it's a super common error , in reassembly . The other thing is when assembling put the rear screw in just till it grabs threads then put the breech screw in and get it close to tight and see if it's seating properly. You can get rid of the pellet hang up by using some paraffin or candle wax in the hole , I had a similar issue and found out thru part swapping I had been sent a 177 cal bolt by accident . Lastly 2 more options for pellet hang up is they sell an after market screw that is domed , or they have plastic washers that raise up the OEM breech screw

When i modded my first 362 . I took off all the modded parts of my 2240 ratcatcher, and used them on the 362. the steel breech only made the barrel more stable and added no fps. The extended bolt probe was abt 13-15 fps add and the boss t/f port is useless without the upgraded valve. The 24" barrell has no benefit over the stock 20" barrell unless you have the Boss valve. Unless you have a boss valve youre spinning wheels 😊. I found out the hard way 😅

If the grub screw is causing pellets to hang up you could add a little Elmers glue in the hole, let it dry. It’ll smooth loading but can be pulled out later with needle or something.

I like the idea of Elmers glue. It wouldn’t be messy and would just pop right back out if I needed to get at the breech screw.

When I get my 362, I'm probably going to scavenge the long Crosman steel breech from my 1377 pistol and switch it to a 22 bolt. Then I'm gonna buy the extra short steel breech for my 1377 to lighten it up a little. I like that long bolt handle. I have one on my 2260. I'll probably get one for my 362. BTW, I can see it gets pretty cold there but do you ever shoot co2 guns? I've seen hunters in the northeast use a system of heat packs to keep their co2 guns warm. Interesting stuff.
@airgunsofalaska
@airgunsofalaska 5 ай бұрын
Interesting! I didn’t realize that there was a long and short Crosman steel breech. I really like the longer bolt handle, I believe I ordered mine from someone off eBay? CO2 guns don’t work that great for me. They start freezing up, even in the summer, if you shoot them too fast. I don’t tend to buy or shoot CO2 guns very often just for those reasons. Plus I don’t like having to buy CO2. I went through a phase a bought a few 6 round burst guns and converted one to full auto. It froze up really fast and I was thinking about a way I could heat the powerlets but never tried anything. I also discovered the full auto novelty quickly wore off. That kind of surprised me but that’s good, it just saved me money. 🤣

Crosman offers a steel breech where the screw that anchors it is under the bolt. The 100 yr anniversary comes with this breech, so no screw to interfere with loading the rifle
@airgunsofalaska
@airgunsofalaska 4 ай бұрын
I wasn’t aware of that breech until a couple months ago. It’s not a direct bolt on to convert to it as you need to drill and tap the pump tube. My understanding is Crosman doesn’t manufacture their guns except for a CO2 model and the 100 yr anniversary with the breech screw hole in the different location. I saw one of the aftermarket airgun vendors selling a pump tube with the hole drilled and tapped. I believe that “hidden” screw breech is made for a 2240 model? It’s too bad they don’t offer it in all their guns. Probably something to do with manufacturing when they went to the plastic breech in the 80’s which feeds pellets no issues.
@petergalante584

Hey everyone looking for a longer bolt than the one that comes with the steel breech, look at the 362 bolt, its longer. I drilled the peened part of the bolt handle on the backside of the bolt just enough that I could tap the 362 bolt knob out, tapped it 8-32, and used it with the bolt handle that comes with the steel breech. Problem solved, it was laying in front of me. I haven't chronoed it, but I'm not done modding it yet.

I prefer the crosman short breech due to the hidden screw placement. but I am not sure if the crosman short breech will fit on the 362. I have the long breech on my 2240 with the 362 barrel, also have the short breech on a 1740 that I made, and I have the plastic breech on my 1377. The plastic breech is definitely easier to use. The Aluminum breeches are tempting.,,but the reviews are not 100% plus it is soft metal. Stinks it's too late to exchange the Baker Breech.

I researched the hidden screw style and it seems like a guy could drill and tap a new hole in the pump tube to use one? I’m not sure I want to take that on though. I’ll never buy another Baker breech again. I wish I’d known then what I know now. I’d have insisted on a replacement or a refund. It’s BS that a guy has to drill or file out the holes to get it to fit properly. I’m likely going to egg out the holes so I can fit it onto my Drifter. Otherwise it’s just a $50 useless piece of junk banging around in my airgun toolbox. I really like all of the customization a guy can do with these style guns by mixing and matching stock Crosman parts. So fun to think about the possibilities! 😄

I have the same issue on my 1377 since I've installed the steel breech (noticed afterwards and gave up since) and assumed it was my bad but from the look of it maybe not? It is a Crosman breech tho so id guess it is only installed wrong or needs an extra o-ring on the top part of the transfer port... Who knows!
@airgunsofalaska
@airgunsofalaska 5 ай бұрын
I’ve only installed three Crosman steel breeches so an insignificant sample group but they all set right on top of the pump tube, no issues. They all lined up beautifully. I’m guessing you likely installed the transfer port fitting upside down so it’s not getting a good seal. The long side goes to the bottom of the barrel. Also check that the rubber seal in the pump tube isn’t torn or damaged and that it is properly seated in its hole. There is no o-ring or seal that fits between the hole in the barrel and the transfer port fitting. Let me know if that fixes your leak? 😀👍

@@airgunsofalaskaI definitely need to get at it soon or later! Haha I might practice on my 2240 with the breech & barrel that Buck Rail sent me just because I will see the results instead of just feeling them haha I really wonder if the leak is from the transfer port or the hole that they drill im the back of canadian 1377 valves tho.. (1322 was not detuned until Crosman changed the boxes... Lets see what happens now.) It is hard to see exactly where the air comes from I guess I could try to test more in depth with flour or somethin'

The chrony seems to help a lot with diagnosing problems I really should get one. That issue with the alum breech is more than I'd be up for dealing with oof, the Crosman breech is nice and solid though. Yeah I'm so happy with my new 362 it's great just stock so I plan to do the practice tinkering and upgrades on the old one. All I need for the new one is paint for the sights, I put the Buckrail barrel mount on it and that's good, but the red dot is much better suited for the Chaser so I'll just keep it there. Did you notice any changes to the new 362? Or is it all just in my head😄
@airgunsofalaska
@airgunsofalaska 5 ай бұрын
This new one was built in January of ‘24 and has been more solid and better put together than my first one from May ‘22. It pumps just as easily as my first one so that eases my concerns that my first 362 was getting worn. One difference that really stood out yesterday was how good the trigger got on my first 362 with use. It feels more crisp and lighter than the new gun. I debated doing this video as I’m not out to purposely bash products but this aluminum breech didn’t work worth a shit on my 362. Even without a chrony a guy would’ve sensed something wasn’t right as the gun sounded louder and air was hitting me in the face. The chrony confirmed the loss of velocity. Plus I already had experience with the Drifter transfer port leaking oil so I was able to figure out the issue really quickly. I won’t be buying another aluminum breech from Baker ever again.

I now understand why most channels only report the good and don’t say anything about the bad. There is an AOA video on pellet sorting that was really good. I’m thinking of starting off with weighing a tin of pellets as a jewelry scale isn’t very expensive. It’d be interesting to see how much difference it makes.
