Comparing the 362 to an RWS Model 34 & RWS Model 54 Air King

Your RWS Model 54, being a fixed barrel, will become your most accurate of the group you have. If you have not done so, begin using PatchWorm bore cleaning whips. With very accurate airgun barrels, you do not want to be using cleaning rods for regular bore maintenance. The Patch Worm whips lets you 'pull' patches down the bore, with a polymer weed whacker type string set up with a sharp end for piercing the patch, then drag patch down to retaining nub. Feed whip into bore entry and pull patch through. I just get the .177 size, and if cleaning a .22 bore, I use two patches stacked on the Patch Worm. Many air rifle match shooters around the world use Patch Worm to keep their bore's clean. Excellent video today!

Thanks! It was good to get the RWS model 54 out shooting again. It’s been a few years since I took it out. It and my Marauder are my most accurate airguns. What I find interesting is I’ve never felt the need to clean those, my RWS model 34, or honestly any of my other airguns. Then I got this 362 and experienced a lot of inconsistency. I’m not convinced that something else isn’t going on with the 362 that’s inherent to the gun that causes is to throw flyers seemingly 40% of the time. I’m wondering if it’s built too light and has too much flex and movement that causes the zero to wander when pumping? I agree with you that I’d not use my .22LR cleaning kit on any of my expensive guns. But with the 362 I got fed up reasoned why not clean it with what I already have and not spend any more money. That Patch Worm kit sounds like a great stocking stuffer idea.👍

I had my Air King out recently. I set out 4" clay pigeons at distances ranging from 30 to 75 yards and had no trouble busting 'em up. I used Crosman 14.3 gr. .22 caliber Premiers (Walmart) and H&N 14.04 gr. Sniper Light pellets. My Air King prefers the H&Ns. After busting up a clay, I shoot the pieces. Sure is fun hitting a one-inch clay shard that is 60-70 yards away. The Accushot 4-12x compact scope mounted on my Air King has held up well to the rifle's recoil. I like watching your videos because you capture the sheer joy of shooting air guns. Please keep 'em coming.

Thanks for the kind words and dang, that’s impressive shooting you are doing! So far that bullseye recoil absorbing mount seems to be holding up okay but I don’t have that many rounds on it. I remember reading about a lot of issues guys were having with the Air King damaging scopes and I think that was a solution that came up a number of times. But. It also introduces more movement and reduced tolerances but I guess for what I’m doing, I’ve not noticed an issue…. yet😄.

Hey! First I follow your VK540 postings and now here we are again. I’m shooting a Walter Terrus air gun and love it. It is consistent and accurate. I took off the scope and using the factory open sights and am every bit as accurate. I find that the scope on air guns just make me feel more shaky than I am. But to each his own. I went through Crossman pellets of all types and they were the most inconsistent. I’ve landed on H&N Silver Point pellets (Amazon) and would say they are far superior to Crossman. One look at the H&N and you see near perfect build consistency and the skirt is perfect. The amount of pellet body that is grabbed by the barrel makes for a really good “spin”…I always found Crossman to be crude and inconsistent and distorted skirts. Great video, keep it up, thanks!

Nice and welcome! We had such a crappy summer and fall with almost near constant rain that I delved into my other hobbies and was surprised at how well this channel has been doing. We don’t have much snow right now so my riding is pretty dismal. I’ve not even gotten my VK out yet or any of my other sleds except for my old Trail Indy. I got a new snowbike which has been really fun but it needs certain types of snow work well. I planning to get some sampler packs and different brands of pellets to try out as I had no idea they varied in quality and accuracy so much. H&N’s are one of the brands I’m planning on getting. Good to hear that you’ve had good experiences with them!

Nice to see another Terrus owner. I like mine a lot. easy to cock and accurate also have an older Diana 34 TO5 for when I want to shoot longer distance. I went "top end" as far as my budget would allow and basically any misses are down to me and not the guns. I've been shooting springers a long time and will stick with them. The Crossman may be accurate but pumping isn't for me and as far as PCP goes, I don't want to invest money in all the extras that go with it, with a springer all you need is pellets and a bit of practice. Shoot a springer well and you can be good any gun, even powder burners as it teaches you about handling recoil and hold over.
@airgunsofalaska
@airgunsofalaska 8 ай бұрын
Pumping can become a drag if a guy is testing a ton of different pellets over an afternoon. But for regular target shooting and plinking I don’t mind. The recoil and vibration of lower end springer guns bothers me more. I agree with you about PCP’s. All the extra stuff gets old and then most everyone tells you that you really need to buy a compressor.

I think the Crosman 362 from what I've seen and watched reviews on was there attempt to get back to the Crosman model 101 of which I have one since the age of 13 I bought it in 1973 for $12 in the boys room in my junior high school ,what can I say I'm from New Jersey. It's been with me all these years and does just fine I think just for fun I'm going to get a 362 and do a comparison between the two. By the looks of it the 362 Centennial Edition looks to me like they were trying to copy the 101 for sure I'm debating whether or not to get that or just $100 model leaning more towards $100 model. I also still have my powermaster 760 from the same year and it's still working also so I don't know what that one individual's comment about crosman's being recycled is all about . Good video nice job. And as a retired army weapons instructor I would say yes the problem was more of the shooter than of the firearms it's just a matter of what you're more familiar with and you get used to. I believe if you take the 362 out into the woods you'll probably fall in love with it once you start Downing some small game.

The 362 is one of my favorite airguns. I even built a 367 as I thought it might work better for longer ranges in the smaller caliber. I’d not thought about it compared to the 101 but that makes sense. I don’t think Crosman made anything similar in decades and I suppose used the Benjamin pumpers to fill that role. I also still have my ‘81 760 that I got as a kid. I just learned yesterday that Crosman is discontinuing the 392 & 397. Maybe they’ll offer a regular production, steel breech, wood stock 362 in its place? I really like how the 362 can be modified compared to the older Benjamin guns but the 392/397 have a better quality feel and accuracy from what I’ve experienced so far.

Whoo that air king hits hard, what a monster. Personally I lean toward getting less expensive air guns more often than vice versa, I think it's more fun that way. I get overly frustrated when the expensive gun gets a problem and am too chicken to work on it myself. So by going cheaper I get more variety and don't feel like I have to totally coddle them.
@airgunsofalaska
@airgunsofalaska Жыл бұрын
Yeah! It was fun to get it out again. I agree, I tend to enjoy my less expensive guns a lot more as well. The Air King with its sliding barrel/breech assembly doesn’t appear that’d it fair to well out in the field or woods if it got dirt or debris in the mechanism. I like it for what I use it for but it isn’t all that practical. I’m having a lot more fun trying to get a relatively inexpensive airgun close to its standard of accuracy.

Hay Buddy! Happy Thanksgiving. It looks like you found yourself a good pellet for the C362. Awesome! Now work on making the trigger lighter and more predictable. Comparing an Air King at almost $800 to a $150 plastic pumper. I think your 362 is doing fine! I wish Crosman gave us a Fortitude quality stock so it was more rigid. Maybe Crosman will make an upgraded model in a couple years? Here are the best mods I've seen for the 362. A steel 3 grub screw breech for barrel mounting rigidity; A metal disco/maximus/fortitude customized trigger at just over 1 lb; Custom valve for about 740 FPS.
@airgunsofalaska
@airgunsofalaska Жыл бұрын
I could definitely tell the difference in trigger feel between the 362 and the RWS guns. It sounds like a trigger from a Crosman PCP gun could be installed in the 362? That’d be neat mod for next summer. My steel breech is the model that has the 3 grub screws, I don’t remember which company I ordered it from? The custom valve sounds pretty cool. I’ve never dissembled a pneumatic to that level. Does the new valve create any reliability issues? I’m not dissatisfied with the existing power of my 362, I was thinking by keeping the “power plant” stock it’d prove to be very reliable long term by not being over stressed. I just want it to be low maintenance and work when I go plinking or take out the occasional squirrel that’s being a pest.

I don't know how good fancy German springers are, but the Crossman C362 is an inherantly more accurate design, I would argue, because once pumped, not much goes on in the crossman when you pull the trigger. It's like a PCP in that regard.
@airgunsofalaska
@airgunsofalaska Жыл бұрын
Yes! 👍 That’s exactly how I think about it as well. In my most recent video I was able to get my 362 tuned in much better for accuracy. There is no doubt in my mind that both pneumatics and PCP’s are easier to shoot accurately offhand than springers. Springers can certainly be very accurate but require more work, practice and technique from the shooter. But, that could be countered with the argument that I had to spend around $100 extra dollars to improve my 362 (new 24” barrel, new breech screw & steel breech) plus learn how to install those parts AND spend hours fine tuning the gun. I didn’t have to do anything with my RWS other than learn it’s traits to shoot it well and even then, those were not difficult to pick up. It’s an easy shooting break barrel, especially compared to my Hatsen model 95. I’ve really been enjoying learning how to improve a less expensive gun. I think there is greater joy to be found in improving and shooting a cheap gun well than just buying and expensive gun and then seeing your results improve.

@@airgunsofalaska PCP and pump pneumatics are more easier to shoot for sure, but a springer will make you a better shooter. Once you can shoot a springer really good all the others (including powder burners) are just too easy.

I'm a bit confused because this is comparing a pump gun to a spring gun, and you have the RWS Air King so you know spring guns have recoil and are tricky to shoot. That's why you pay 700-800 for the Air King with a recoilless system. The 362 has advantages right off the bat. You can bag it any way you want and hold it any way you want making it easier to shoot accurately. Pump guns like PCP's tend to be less pellet picky than spring guns. Why don't we all just buy the 100.00 pump gun? Because we pumped them up like a million strokes as a kid and don't want to pump them up after each shot anymore. Would be a more fitting to compare a 100.00 spring gun to your RWS spring guns. I have no doubt the 362 with a little work would keep up with my Walther Competition Ultra and HW97k. It's just the nature of pneumatic air rifles over spring powered.

Last fall when starting the channel I rediscovered how good pneumatic guns could be. For decades I basically viewed them as cheap, kids guns and got all caught up in buying ever more expensive springers and PCP’s. I thought it was really interesting to see how well a lower priced pneumatic compared to expensive European airguns and how much easier it is to shoot.

The wind definitely has a bigger effect on airgun pellets than it does on heavier, faster firearm bullets. I don’t even bother making shooting test videos if it’s windy out as the results are too inconsistent. @GrantRTanner Thinking back on what I would have liked better at 12 and it’d have been the 2289 hands down. I remember getting the Crosman skeleton stock for my 1377 when I was that age and it felt and looked really cool. I always felt like a commando when I was shooting it. Plus it’s so light and handy it just feels better. Of course it all depends on how he likes to shoot and what you guys are into. Both are quite easy to pump. The 362 is more accurate at longer ranges and more powerful. I generally use my 2289 out to 20 yds. What’s nice about the 2289 is he can also learn to shoot it as a pistol. That’s a really nice option. The 2289 can also be broken down and placed in a backpack so if you were hiking or biking to someplace to shoot you wouldn’t attract attention from Karen’s. I like both guns, it mainly depends on how and where you’ll shoot the most.
