Loved your tutorial. Your husband at the end is hilarious! "20 minutes of fast paced action" lol thanks for showing how to do this! You explained it so well. Making your own scroll frame is a lot easier than it seems. Sometimes I get dowels that are made of a harder wood and it completely doesn't staple like it should. I've had to use linoleum nails from Walmart to get it secured instead. Thanks for sharing the way you do it!

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have had so much trouble finding an affordable scroll system; I was also buying the scroll frames from chain crafts stores with the split dowels and was constantly having to re-tighten and adjust my projects. I will be using this little tip for a couple of my new larger pieces, and it will be so easy to switch them out. Great video...

Nice bonus footage at the end. Yelling like pewdiepie while cross stitching, wonder what what that would look like, lol.

Fabulous, my no basting system is NO MORE. Thanks for this great tutorial.
@CourtneyECR8 жыл бұрын
+Shana Coltion Thanks for the encouragement. Basting takes a good bit longer for sure, but I don't mind the time investment. I will actually be working on a lot of these pieces for months, so I don't have to do the basting very often. and now that I have several sets of dowels, I will only have to do the basting part again when I finish a project and start another on the same set of dowels. Not the whole process.

Thanks for this. I have what I think is that very same (cheapy) scroll frame from JoAnn's. I used it for about a week, then decided I didn't like it, and it's currently sitting in the pile to go to Goodwill. After watching this video, I think I'll pull it out and keep it, there may be hope for it after all. I don't have a floor stand, but maybe someday. Love the extra footage at the end. Enjoy watching your videos and seeing all your work!!

What a super fantastic tutorial video. I have been making dowel rods like that for years, but have always used rug binding (which is quite narrow only about 1 1/2"). I really like the idea of using aida instead. I will certainly use that on my next set of rods.

+Febby Marsh I hope it works for you!

It never occurred to me to buy scroll rods at the hardware store, but it makes perfect sense. Maybe you could machine baste your fabric to the Adia if you wanted to do it faster. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for the tutorial! I was always wondering how people did the scroll rod basting!
@suzymcclung97898 жыл бұрын
I do the same thing, but I stitch the aida to the actual project fabric before I staple the aida to the rod so that I do not have to do any hand stitching. I use the sewing machine and a basting stitch. I have found that although I do alot of hand word on my projects, for some reason I HATE hand basting the fabric onto the dowl rod!

I don't currently use scroll frames, but if I ever did I would use your method FOR SURE!! This is so much nicer than those cheap scroll frames I bought that never tighten enough. Oh, and you can tell what your fabric is this way: Lugana is only made by Zweigart and Jobelan is only made by Wichelt. If there is orange thread in the selvage, it's a Zweigart fabric and therefore Lugana. If not, it's Jobelan! 😉 they're very similar in makeup (both are cotton/rayon blends,) but Jobelan has "plumper" threads than Lugana. Either way, they are both lovely to stitch on. 👍🏻 love the floss toss with your threads on that nice pale gray.
@LittleYellowHouseCrafts8 жыл бұрын
+Little Yellow House Crafts I lied. Wichelt does make a Lugana, but it wouldn't have the orange thread in the selvage. If there is orange thread, then its Zweigart Lugana. If not, its probably Wichelt lugana like you said. Cross stitch fabric is so confusing! ;)

Fab tutorial I never thought to use aida I stapled normal fabric onto mine and it was quite a pain to baste my fabric onto it, I'll definitely use your method for my next set! Thanks for a great video :-)

Great video!! Love DIY stuff! I have some scroll rod frames sitting around that do not give me good tension. Maybe I will try this and see how it works. I Like the idea of keeping the projects on the rods, but with some of my frame systems it is too expensive to buy rods for every project I am working on. I will give this a try! Thx! Love the hubby conversation at the end!! lol

great tutorial, I hadn't thought to use aida either! I always used canvas but the aida is not only easy to get it works perfectly
@kristywithak22488 жыл бұрын
This is a great tutorial. What would happen if you marked the center of the wooden dowel and the center of the aida ? That way you could match up the center of your linen/evenweave and have your project centered widthwise on the frame.
@CourtneyECR8 жыл бұрын
that is an excellent idea!

I was wondering if making the material enough to just staple and trim after finishing the project? I have never used a frame but will try it out. Thanks for the great video!!
@5877user7 жыл бұрын
Can you use masking tape to attach your project fabric to the dowel rod instead of sewing extra fabric onto the scroll rod?
@EndlessSurprisesSD8 жыл бұрын
Just curious why you didn't roll it the short way and make wider braces? The 36" frame seems very ungainly.
@CourtneyECR8 жыл бұрын
+Endless Surprises You could do that! It's called "stitching sideways" and it can work beautifully, you just have to turn the pattern 90 degrees and work that way. Basically the reason I used such long dowels is because my piece is long, and I prefer to work with it upright. I don't hold this frame in hand, I use a lap stand that grips the bottom dowel and I stitch two-handed. I already have two other pieces on 36" rods and one on 41" rods (Heaven and Earth, what!) so I already knew I was comfortable with having them that long.
