www.crosstrainingenduro.com tractionerag.com Do you let other riders ride your motorbike? There was a long discussion about this on an enduro forum, with a huge variety of answers. Into hard enduro riding? See all our dirt bike videos for dirt riding tips. Our channel now had hundreds of dirt bike videos covering reviews, and enduro riding techniques. On one side, there were extreme enduro riders who said 'No one touches my motorbike!' This included sexual partners, friends and their dog. The other extreme? Riders who would let anyone ride their motorbike... aliens, primates, even random guys they met on the trail. Search our channel for dirt riding gear too. Our dirt riding tips also include wider topics such as the best dirt riding boots. And of course there was a pile of different opinions between these extremes. There are plenty of them around! Me? I always let friends ride my motorbikes. A stranger? No. I want to ride with them for at least 30 minutes and see what sort of rider they are. Then maybe we will swap motorbikes. What do you think about letting others ride your motorbike? Do you ever lend your motorbike to friends? Let us know in the comments! And now I'll leave you with a few minutes of enduro FM. Some riders have no issues with their friends riding their motorbike. Other riders said they would let a stranger ride their motorbike if they understood the rules.... you break it, you fix it! This is where it gets interesting. In one situation, a rider lets a friend ride his RR480 but tells him not to do any wheelies. The friend does a wheelie, crashes, and causes $1000 in damages. But he has no money so he just says "Bad luck" to the owner. Don't assume a friend will automatically pay for any damages. A very good friend asked me if she could borrow my DR650. I said "No problem. But you will need to pay for the insurance excess if you crash". She looked offended and declined my offer. It's always a good idea to ensure anyone riding your motorbike understands the principle.... you break it, you fix it! Some people assume a friendship means you will take care of their mistakes. Just ask if you want to be a 'boy racer' on someone else's machine. I think this is just good riding etiquette. It reminds me of an old story. This guys comes up to me and starts asking questions about my DR650. After a few minutes he suddenly gets on the DR. I immediately say "Get off my motorbike". He looked puzzled and asked why. I said "You don't get on my motorbike without asking first". He laughed and dismounted. But he leaves the DR650 in a slightly different position and it falls over. He isn't worried at all and thought it was amusing. What a dickhead. The situation becomes more interesting if a friend borrows your motorbike. What happens if it is returned with a seized engine? Was it due to riding on the 'rev limiter' all day? Or was there already a problem with the engine? Who pays for the repairs? Both of you? Hopefully this never happens. But I think it's a good idea to discuss these scenarios. It would be a shame to wreck a friendship because you both had very different ideas. If you borrow someone's motorbike and want to ride it aggressively, maybe check with the owner first! I can remember a guy asking to ride a friend's KTM 300 then we could hear him riding full throttle into the distance for about 10 minutes. The owner was into slow technical riding and I could see the pain on his face... his beloved baby was being thrashed. A lot of owners wouldn't care. Some do.

I let my brother race a harescramble on my 2 week old GASGAS EC300 because his bike was waiting a backordered part. He is a superior rider, and if I hadn't seen the gopro footage, I'd never have known that he crashed it!! Figured if something did break, I'd just take the part off his bike and he could order himself a new one haha

From the moment you've decided to let your friend try your bike the burden is on you. I did it sometimes with good friends that were extremely good riders but one of them found a soft patch of sand in the dunes (morocco), nothing he could do and flip my bike forward and it landed literally upside down wheels still spinning. Scratches on the GPS, plastic cracked and one bend lever...he right away ask to pay for it but meanwhile my trip was going to be different since the bike is not the same anymore (something to consider when you are on a trip), no big deal but still. Anyway i never accepted his offer and fixed my bike when i got home. My decision my problem. However i rarely do that anymore and frankly i never ask for a friend's bike...regular riders know this better than anyone, you just do it because of the consequences, period.

I'm happy for my mates to take the DR200 or CT110 out with me for a day of trail riding. A few people have had their first ride on those, what's a few broken levers amongst mates. My other bikes, I care a lot more about those and it would have to be the right mate. The sorta guys that have to give it 110% and ride like it's an MX race can ride their own bikes IMO.

A friend crashed my TZ350 at about 230k/ph. Due to a worn/hard carb boot it spat a carb off when braking at the end of the back straight for the sweeper of our local track, and it seized. It was a truly spectacular crash, with bits flying everywhere. The wheels were still in line, but the fairing, fuel tank & seat were gone, and the subframe bent. He spent a few nights in hospital, and is about centimeter shorter as a result, but was otherwise OK and is to this day. If it didn't happen to him, it would have happened to me, so I'm quite happy I was sitting in the stands watching it happen!

@@crosstrainingenduro The offer was made, but he was quite poor. Given it was a race bike I had a fairly extensive spares kit, so it went back together quickly. At the end of the day it was just a machine - a philosophy I still hold today. People I know and that I know can ride are welcome to use my current bikes, a Himalayan & Beta Evo, so they're not expensive or overly fragile.

I bought a 1995 DR350S in awesome shape for $1500. That is the "Buddy" bike. A select few friends/relatives are welcome to ride my Beta's. I went on a road ride a few weeks ago. My cousin let me ride his band new Husky 901 Norden Adventure. We rode 200 miles of Northern California mountain roads. It was really nice. And I was super careful to not abuse or damage his new bike. And the expectation is "you break it, you fix it'.

I've had quite a few bad experiences of letting friends and acquaintances ride my bike, then crashing and breaking shit (and not paying up) or, somehow way worse in my eyes, trashing the bike around as if they found it on the side of a road, doing wheelies and speed runs on asphalt with knobbies etc., all with that mind-bogglingly clueless attitude that pisses me off to no end. Despite that, I'll still let pretty much anyone ride my bike if I can hope to expect just a bit of respect from them, even just an honest "sorry".

Friends can ride my dirt bikes. Strangers can ride them if we swap bikes and I've ridden with them first to assess their skill and care level. I've only let two other people ride my RC51. For the RC, it's mint and vintage and the two I let ride it were willing and capable of fixing it if they damaged it. They were highly skilled riders. Plus, with the RC the amount of speed and power will easily kill the unprepared rider.

I have no problem letting close friends riding my bike. Never a random acquaintance though. All my friends ride with the same aggression (or lack of) as me so I'm fine. One of my buddies will let any random person ride his bike...even race them. Of course has currently has 8 bikes in his garage! I'm looking forward to riding his Stark Varg when it comes in. I'm getting a 2024 300RR next week and plan on keeping my 2017 300RR so I have a spare bike for friends. It will mostly be my son who currently has a CRF450 that is not so fun in the woods. Looking forward to some good woods riding with him like we used to do 30 years ago!

Personally, it depends on which type of object we are talking about (I am broadening the scope a little) If it's my beat-up wr250r, sure try it. You won't do anything that I have not done without hurting yourself (and after that point the bike does not matter) If it is my car that can REALLY EASILY be shifted in a wrong gear, you're gonna have to prove yourself first

You bend it you mend it ! No excuses I only lend my bike to people I trust so if the engine lets ho on them I know it would of let go on me. It's one reason I won't rev someone else's bike hard. If I'm full throttle and it seizes, then there was obviously an existing problem but I've brought it on. But if I'm at low to midrange revs then it was going to happen regardless.

@@crosstrainingenduro agree 100% as a decent person you should always respect other people’s property. When it happened to me I leant my bike at a race meeting to a guy who was obviously riding full throttle. Just as I was would of been in my next race. So I knew what I was getting myself into.

I lend my bikes frequently *with the clear understanding **_stated,_** not assumed.* But I am also very reluctant to ride most other peoples bikes, because I am always worried about accidentally damaging it and the repair just won't be the same as it was. I will let a stranger try it, *if I've watched them ride a bit and they seem like they will respect my property.* But there are people I know that I won't let borrow any of my stuff, because they damaged someone else's stuff and seemed to have zero remorse or compulsion to make it right. (that affects even my trust to have them over to my house) *My attitude toward my own stuff is it's **_just stuff._** Care for it, but it's purpose is to be used for good.* I also understand the continual disappointment of when you _had_ something nice and someone has now permanently marred it. It will never be like it was. For some reason, *my cars always seem to get hit when parked,* even when placed well out of the way and in good visibility parked with other cars. Most of the time, that is some friend or friend of a friend who is really poor and barely scraping by. They have always been very humble and come back in the house feeling ashamed to have damaged my stuff and asking how they can make it right. God has blessed me so much, *it seems only reasonable that I should pass that blessing on by forgiving them the repairs owed.* It's what I would wish someone would do for me if our life situations were reversed, and I was in a bind with daunting consequences to face.

And on a related note: I became very careful about loaning my modded eagle talon tsi (aka awd turbo eclipse). It was a very fast, but understeer prone car. I kept hearing stories _about 8mo after I loaned it out_ about how they had taken it 70mph down neighborhood residential streets! I would consider that reckless and needlessly endangering with my own driving skills (used to wet windy roads with blind corners and deer), but I knew they aren't even close my driving skill level and knew they didn't have the driving skills to understand how to prevent a high speed understeer. They were going to get somebody killed or kill their self when they understeer into a brick wall, and I would be my stupid fault for allowing them that option. So I became particular about who I let use it, even for a quick grocery run. And on borrowing, I know someone I would never borrow anything from, because he was notably bad about maintenance. I would expect a chainsaw or lawnmower to blow up if borrowed, so I might as well buy my own instead. He would have been cool about it, _but his wife_ was exactly the type to demand the newest model in replacement for a clapped out one, and would still be looking dirty at you for it. Not worth any of that hassle.

Really interesting about your parked cars being damaged. I usually park right at the end of carparks to get get away from everyone else. And yet there's often someone who will ignore all the empty spaces and park right next to mine lol. Years ago I got sick of people opening their car doors on to mine. But some drivers must think their car will be lonely if not parked right up against mine in a half empty carpark. 😂

And that's a good point about your Turbo Eclipse. My last car was a Proton Jumbuck, a very cheap light ute (small truck in the US?) which was very prone to oversteer. I'm no rally driver so I'd be very careful on wet roads especially. Very bad design flaw when almost every car on the road is inclined to understeer because 99.9% of are very mediocre drivers at best!

I have a few rules to loaning my bikes and they vary from bike to bike. Rider experience, age, ability to pick it up if they drop it, etc. all play a part. Normally a friend is going to be approved but there have been a couple guy's I said no to. I have also swapped bikes with guy's on the trail wanting to try it out, but their bike has to be of a similar type and value, plus we both have to agree to pay any damages and they have to "look" like they can afford it. It is both fun and informative to ride different bikes. If someone is riding my bike and the motor blows It could be a problem, I would have to make an honest evaluation of time on the motor and how they were riding it to determine if it was just time or their riding that was the major factor, never had any such problems. I NEVER let someone take my bike to go riding without me going too.

Vehicles (especially dirtbikes) are made to have fun with, i'll never understand candy ass sports car owners who get upset when a mechanic does a quick full throttle pull in their car, like that same car won't be fine for 20 minute track sessions. Depends on the bike, I'll put anyone with a pulse on my pit bike, I'm marginally pickier about my dual sport (a friend I know who won't be a dickhead, I figure there's nothing worse they can do to my bike than I do it), and I'm real picky about who rides my old BMW, the number of people who I'd be ok with taking that for a spin could be counted in one hand. Your lady friend should never be allowed to ride your bikes, or anyone else's. I say the same thing in loaning out tools, which I seldom do. But it's "You break it, you fix it (in a hurry) and give it back to me in the same condition I loaned it to you." Addendum: Never borrow an iffy bike or the owner might make you pay for existing damage. Also, make sure they can ride before loaning a bike.

Only 2 rules, you need to know the person and see how they ride, and they fully understand the "bend it fix it " rule. It's a great way to try out a different bike, maybe you're thinking of buying or whatever, because you got buckleys chance of a dealer giving you a ride on most things. Strangers and lunatic riders, just no......

Let a guy try my 23 beta last weekend, he's a mx rider and he gave it the beans! He came back from his lap and I could see the glow on his face that he really loved the bike. However, he doesn't understand that its not a mx bike, but thats ok cause he told me that the bike is faster than what I thought it was. But in hind sight that will probably be the last time anyone rides my beta baby!

I'd be grinding my teeth! lol A well maintained two stroke is designed to cope with being ridden in the powerband of course... but your chances of crashes, engine seizing or gearbox failures all rise. Who pays if something like that goes wrong on his test ride? That's the kind of thing that would be going through my mind.

Scott’s never allowed to ride my bike anymore! Not that he would ever want to. Got off his fuel injected, somewhat soft initial power delivery KTM 250 four stroke and on to my new 2023 Beta 300 carby bike. It took less than ten minutes for him to Whiskey Throttle himself into oblivion. It’s September 1st 2023. I think the cast comes off his leg in another four weeks. He did offer to pay for any damages but other than a new set of bars and some cosmetic issues no big deal. I actually felt a little guilty as I offered up the crazy little Italian in the first place. Joe Pesci in the form of a motorcycle, if you will.

I watched in disbelief on the trail a few years ago, a 60 year old [novice] rider initially verbally abuse a 68 year old [intermediate] rider before trying to start a fight with him, then when it was obvious the elder wasn't going to, engage, threw and hit him from close range with his helmet..[i stifled a laugh, when the older chap, said..OW, that really hurt me, in a genuine tone] That's when I [youngest of group, 50s [inter/exp] stepped in and said enoughs enough, luckily I'm what you may infer, a 6foot2" "big" bloke, who each knew I wasn't joking....the reason....??? Trying to be helpful on a muddy steephill with logs, the 68 had seen 60 leave his bike and go look at what lay ahead, and I genuinely believe thought he was helping [having known him a longtime] RODE 60s bike up/over and around said obstacles....oh dear, he never asked permission, I kinda saw he had emasculated 60 but not deliberately. I even said 60 could ride my bike if he wanted...but he knew he couldn't and declined, but alas, the damage was done, 60 rode off from us, never to be seen again, 68 still to this day wont accept he did anything wrong, and as joint trail run leader said he wouldn't ever ride with other chap again. The moral of this actual event....well its been whirling around my head for years, and I see this as the opportunity to get rid of it....ASK 1ST before you ride someone else's bike !! I personally couldn't care less, so long as they ask, [common courtesy] and use the you ride it you damage it, you probably now own it, at my sale price....What do everyone/anyone else think? ps it is rhetorical, I know, nobody cares, ha ha K [ ingerLand ]

Interesting story! A bit different... but I remember a guy started a conversation with me then casually sat on my bike. I said "Hey, would you mind getting off my bike?" He looked surprised, got off and then because he'd moved it slightly the stand collapsed and the bike fell over. I just shook my head as he didn't even say 'Sorry'. So yeah, I guess it's always a good idea to ask before you even sit on someone's bike, let along ride it. Some will care, some won't. Best to play it safe!
