Sometimes you just gotta' try something... because why not...at least that is what Tim thought when he tackled a 70lb Redbud crotch. Join Tim on this bumpy journey on what he now calls 'A big pain in the crotch!'. Filled with wind-shake cracks, rotted wood, large voids and live slugs this wood easily becomes one of the most difficult pieces of timber Tim has ever met.
You can find the Elbo Hollowing Tool, Tim’s Tools and instructional DVDs on the Woodturning with Tim website: www.woodturningwithtim.com

I am a Robust dealer (which adds nothing to your costs) and I am more than happy to help you pick out and configure your new lathe.

I was pleased to see you drill a hole in the wood for use on the live end of the lathe to keep it from flying off. That's an old trick I have seen experienced wood turners use to play it safe. I use this technique to keep wood on the lathe when safety becomes a big concern with unwieldy pieces of wood. However, there is a wood turner across the pond in the UK who disagrees with me and says it is not a safety measure and wood flies off the lather because it is improperly mounted. I disagree with his line of thought since I have seen way too many accidents involving wood turning in my career as a safety engineer for industry.

When I cut my finger off on my band sawI was so glad I was not wearing gloves. 'Nice' clean cut, no fabric in the wound and I didn't get pinched in the saw slot.

Doing all my projects on a small cheap harbor freight midi lathe in my backyard. While my neighbor tries to call the city code enforcement people on me for no reason. It is becoming a troublesome hobby but I refuse to stop. I enjoy a number of these videos. Maybe one day I can make enough to have an indoor shop and a nice lathe. Until then I'll just live through this guy.

I am amazed at the size and shape of the crotch you are turning. I'm a beginner so it looks impossible to me. I love your videos and the way you explain things. Thanks so much.

Glad to see you take on the big challenge and use the elbow tool. I found the same thing using the carbide scraper. I look forward to the final turning.

Hi Tim, I agree, you have got to love the American Beauty! Although I’ve not tried to do a mega blank yet. Hope it hold together as it has some good looking grain patterns. Looking forward to part 2. Stay safe and well to keep the videos coming. Cheers, Tom

I'm glad for turners like you, because I would have walked away after seeing the ring shake. Will you be applying CA during the coming months as cracks appear?
@woodturningwithtimyoder
@woodturningwithtimyoder 3 жыл бұрын
i'm going to hold off on the CA until I get it back on the lathe. I have seen some cracks grow during the drying process to only close back up towards the end. Also I like ugly so the more cracks the better!

Hey Tim could you put the info on the Mike Hunter cutter you used. I purchased your hollowing tool and would also like to use the carbide cutter at times. Thx

I sell the Hunter tool on my site wtwtim.com/elbo-hollowing-system/elbo-accessories/carbide/ or you can buy from Mike at huntertoolsystems.com/retrofit-overview-new/ It is the 1/4" shank that you need.

Great job. How much time did you put into turning the bowl to the desired thickness? Knowing such helps evaluate our own struggles with turning challenging wood.
@woodturningwithtimyoder
@woodturningwithtimyoder 3 жыл бұрын
The hollowing took about 2 hours because of the low RPMs. If I had a steady it probably would have taken 30 minutes.

@@woodturningwithtimyoder Wow! That is al or less time than what I thought. Sharp tools and nice ‘robust’ lathe make a work of difference.

Man you really had to work for that!!! Tim is your shop floor concrete and is your lathe bolted to the floor? I can relate to how expensive a carbide bandsaw blade is. I have a 1 inch carbide blade and it was not cheap!
@woodturningwithtimyoder
@woodturningwithtimyoder 3 жыл бұрын
Wood floors and the building is on blocks so the whole place rocks on a project like that! I am saving up for the 1" blade. It would have been a lot easier and safer to use for the roughing cuts on the log.

That redbud crotch may be ugly now but if you are successful in keeping it together long enough to get a finish on, it will be a beautiful piece. Will we be seeing you at SWAT this year? Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.

Me too but mine was out of action. The throttle is stuck in idle. It gave me a chance then to show how careful you have to be when doing large cuts on the bandsaw.
