Grew up in Crow's Nest in the early 1950s in a semidetached terrace in Chandos St. Left home in the early 1970s. Thanks for the walkaround. Last there in 2001. Needless to say, it's changed a lot, much laughter. Our semidetached was 3 main rooms downstairs, 2 bedrooms upstairs (lights only upstairs, no power points). Entry via middle room (stairs to bedrooms in it), side passage. Front loungeroom, third room (at back) kitchen. Bathroom and laundry off kitchen. Mum had a gas copper in the laundry and boiled a pot of about 9 litres on gas stove as hot water for bath, which she carried into the bathroom. Terrifying! Them were the days!. No shower over bath until I was 16! Lean to toilet out the back. No hot water to kitchen sink!. Tenants next door under controlled rent* so my parents got the house "cheap" for the time. *Landlord and Tenants act passed in 1939 with onset of WW2. Rent could not be increased or tenants evicted. On return, a soldier's family were allowed to remain under those conditions until they (and their widow) died. Back then Crow's Nest was a mixture of working class (some very poor) through to wealthy! All in the same street/surrounding streets. Thanks for the walkaround.

Wow thanks for sharing that story. That’s quite a history you had with the place. You’re right very different these days. Millions to live there now.

I’ve been to Sydney 5 times but never heard of crows nest, so good to see and hear about this area. Sydney is my ‘happy place’ I love it, and it is so good to watch these VTs, walking streets and areas I know and others I don’t, it is a pleasure, the film quality is good, in all his VTs HW tells us the area he’s in, the street etc and gives interesting info about the place, the streets the buildings and back history (if there is any).

I was watching this video, and nothing much is as I remember it. The street names are about all that were familiar to me. I used to work at Crows Nest, in Albany St, just off the Pacific highway, back in 1987-90. The station hadn't been built over yet. Most buildings only 3-4 floors. The buildings are mostly different when I look on google maps, the one I worked in has been replaced. There was a famous toy shop near where I worked, called "Uncle Petes" - slogans "Uncle Petes toys are magic" & "What's Uncle Pete up to now?" We would often go to Willoughby Rd for lunch on someones birthday. Mostly Chinese. Sometimes Thai or Italian. There were many good eating spots. The footpaths have been widened from what I remember. I've also been to Crows Nest in Queensland, up from Toowoomba. That was in 1995. No doubt it has changed a lot too.

I commented before watching to the end, so just a couple of extra observations. I bought pizza and pasta sometimes for lunch in Clarke St, on the bend just before Willoughby Rd, probably at Pino's, but I don't recall the name. You made it to Albany St, but stopped short of where I had worked. It was between Oxley St and Pacific Hwy, number 11. One day while loading some old computer terminals in the carpark, now built over, a car heading up the hill clipped another near Oxley St and ended up on the footpath. I turned quickly to see the car swerving and come to a stop. An old monitor fell off the trolley, it was to be scrapped anyway. The lady driver of the VW Beetle got out, shaken but unharmed, leaving the car in a garden bed.

Yeh Crows Nest has changed a lot, as has St Leonard’s. I see Uncle Pete’s still exists but online. Still plenty of eating to be done in and around Crows Nest. Thanks for watching and sharing your memories.

Hello HW...interesting...in the start of the video, it shows similar palms that we have all around us in South Carolina! Nice walk to Crows Nest. Sydney looks great. The coffee shop looks nice. And those homes....really nice! Thanks for the tour!

Plenty of Palm trees around in Sydney. But most imported. I think the only native ones are usually smaller. Thanks for watching Steve.

That Woolworths was a picture (movie) theatre up until the late 1960s (date?). The "Crowie Pub" (Crow's Nest Hotel) was a real working class pub.

Picture theatre hey. I didn’t know that. The Crows Nest Hotel still gets the workers to this day. They get in there for the weekday lunch specials.

Hi HW, you are making things very difficult for me. At first , I was thinking of buying an apartment in the CBD area but after watching your videos which show so many great places to live in Sydney, I'm going to have one hell of a job deciding! Now all I need to do is win the lottery. :) Cheers.

The church is (I think) St Thomas Anglican Church. In those days the Cathos (we were Catholic) and the Proddos didn't mix. So, the Catholic church was St Leonard's at Naremburn (about 1.5km away on Willoughby Rd).

Yes I know all about those days. Big divide between Roman Catholics and Anglicans.

I was thinking of the 3 Stooges....but the 3 Nectarteers is cool. 🤣 Those beautiful pinkish/purple flowers are on a Glory tree. (Tibouchina) I think your Bunnies are trying to buy a premiership, after signing Wighton...the Roosters would never do that ! 🐓🔴🐓⚪️🐓🔵🐓

Haha 3 stooges. Glory Tree looks like it. Thanks 🙏. I wore my Rabbitohs cap today. Normally when I do that before the match I jinx them. But I suppose it worked against the Panthers. I was at that match.

Aussies will watch any sport. But we don’t get to see the Ice hockey much. Very small niche sport here as well. Shame about your team.
