CRT Millenium | Overview, Power Test, Mods and How To Enable 8w High Power Mode!

In this video I take a look at the CRT Millenium AM/FM 'multinorm' CB Radio. Compact in size, but when modded can pack a real punch!
I go over the features and functions of the radio followed by some power tests in both low and high power modes respectively.
Also I'll show you how to tweak the modulation and power levels for your own discretion.
Lastly, i'll show you how to not only enable the radio to operate in the high power mode but how to actually switch it on and off from the radio via a keypress.

Great review. I just bought one and its perfect size for the car. Thanks to you I now understand how it all works. An added bonus is that I tested the high power mode and it looks like it's already been modified.

The RF gain is actually an attenuator, oddly. Great receive on this radio using a decent antenna.

Hi. nice video. Thanks. As i know, the second jumper (closer to the front) does not support the high power mode. With this jumper you can expand the radio to the 10m band. To switch to the 10m band you have to execute another key combination during start up. Actually I don't know this combination. I have seen this in a video here on YT 2 or 3 years ago. I think it was shown on a Albrecht AE6110, wich is nearly simular to the CRT Milenium.

Hi Mike! Thanks for the video, really useful. I am looking to get a CB to fit to my first 4x4, and I found this one at a decent price around £50. Do you know of any others models I should look at before I buy, please?

Hi Paul, rigs like this are basic entry level CB radios and they do work but not as well as other CB radios on the market. It all depends on what size radio and what modes you wish to use, having said that a nice small radio that can fit anywhere is the albrecht AE6110 and there’s also a little more dearer on price, CRT2000 but has a wonderful colour screen. But however they only do AM and FM, whereas if you want something with more punch and a few more modes to play with then an SSB radio would be the way forward and performance will be better due to higher power output. A great priced SSB rig is the CRT6900 which is truly a cracking radio. Due to changes here in the UK a few years ago we can now use SSB legally 👍🏻 whatever you decide, enjoy it :) 73’ and stay safe.

Wonder if it will still work safely off the cigar lighter or will it pop the fuse?

I’ve run a President Grant 2 (standard) which was doing 10w on FM through a lighter socket in the car and it didn’t blow a fuse. Used it for a few years too. So I can’t see this popping any fuses to be honest but worth having a spare fuse for the car handy anyway :)

10w via 12v dc is 0.83 amps so fuse should be fine.

Most cars cigar lighters run at around 10 amps... So you could run around 30w without issue. I did 100w once... it didnt pop the fuse but it did melt the internals of the lighter socket plug

Hi Mike very informative thank you. I have recently got back into radio, I have bought myself a CRT xenon, do these radios have the same boards? I do struggle being heard as I live in a very rural area, so boasting power would be great?? Cheers

welcome back to the hobby! as for the CRT Xenon, from what I've looked at online - it can only be modified to run the high power mod on the EU band. It looks to be the same as the Delta Slim and a couple of others that only run high power on the EU or ham bands when opened up. The delta slim for example, can only be run at low power which is under 4w. I may be wrong, but from reading on Simon The Wizard's blog, it's not possible at the moment in UK mode. Hi Mike, thanks for the video. I'm new for cb radios and just got the crt millenium as my first radio, however i'm having issues receiving plus no sound coming from radio. like i told you i am green and got the radio as I am an offroad enthusiast. Can you guide me whether to check if the apparatus is gone? regards Tony.

Check the speaker connection. It's thin wire and may have a poor solder joint.

Is it compatible with MK6500 microphone? The original product is manufactured by PNI I think that the mics are compatible...

What is the maximum frequency range of this radio in AM mode. I saw a chart somewhere that only the standard 40 channels are available in AM mode, is this true?

I haven’t got it anymore but from what I remember the AM mode works on the EU/Cept band.

@@OnTheMicwithMike Ok thanks. I was hoping that the frequency range would be wide open with AM/FM both available as well. Not much FM used in the US on the CB band but the extra frequencies are always welcome.

Hi. Newly back to the hobby and have just bought one of these. When I switch it on, there is absolutely no sound whatsoever from the speaker. No static, no hiss, nothing. It`s as if it isn`t switched on, although it is as the display lights up. Is this normal? Also, I can`t remember what settings are best for squelch and RFG. Any pointers to help me please? Haven`t used a CB for 40 years so my memory isn`t as good as it was so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

When you switched it on did you select what band you want it to turn on to? If you don’t select the band you want when it’s first turned on I think it sits in the band select menu which could be what’s happening. I can’t help anymore than that as I wasn’t that impressed with the radio and sent it back.

@@OnTheMicwithMike Hi. Thanks for the quick response. I`ve had the radio a couple of days but, only after watching your video did i find how to set it to UK mode. So, I set it to UK but there is still no background hiss at all. It might be normal but usually on speakers there`s is some background noise. I will go back out and twiddle a bit more but, I`m not hopeful :( Thanks again.

Aha. Just pressed lots of buttons and something happened as there is now plenty of background static, which disappears when I press the ptt. Now, all I need is someone to talk to.....
