So, I'm American & have been watching 3 narrow boat channels the last few months - yours, Minimal List, & Foxes Afloat. I've lived in Iowa, Missouri, & Illinois very near the Mississippi River my whole life, & been boating on smaller rivers a lot & the Mississippi a few times. So I recently decided to look at videos of barges going through locks on the Mississippi. Then, as youtube does, it recommended videos to me of boats going through locks on the Columbia River on the border of Oregon & Washington states. Holy shit - they have several locks on the Columbia that are around 100 foot tall!!! They are scary to watch, but you know, I find the little locks on your canals almost as scary! I think that's because they bring out the claustrophobia in me. Absolutely thoroughly enjoyed this video, thank you!

Back in 1976 when I was on the Coast Guard Cutter Campbel, we were heading north off Southern Oregon, when we got into a slight blow....75 Knots off the Port bow from the North West, and accompanying the wind, were 40 ft. swells hitting the bow and going over the bridge which is 38 ft. off the water! Now that was Rocking and Rolling without a Bass guitar lead! Aaaaargh Matey!

I laughed so hard at the description of going under the bridge 😂

"Cruising the Cut" is my entertainment stream during the the virus siege in the US. I hope to see the remaining 100. Sailing and cruising are my joy in life. Even had a 57' Chesapeake Bay bugeye ketch (loads of web descriptions) in the 70s. Family loved it. Sorry we couldn't have cruised together. You're great entertainment as a shipmate.

Did you know that the large 'brace' on tower bridge going one side to the other at the top (directly above the road) is, in fact, a pedestrian walkway for when the bridge is raised. It was closed to the public a few years after the bridge was opened due to 'ladies of the night' using it to help gentleman alleviate stress.

Damn, London stuns every single time. Every old novel and story and history book I've read just rings every time. An American with an interest just never gets tired of it, I've spent a couple weeks total over there. One of the finer London days ever caught on film. Battersea is impressive with or w/o Pink Floyd. Apparently she only smoked on all 4 for a brief period in her history, but imagine her during her heyday, smoking in the smog, in a gloomy London smog. That's a romantic vision for me, btw. Whenever I was in England proper, I was never quite away from the feeling I was about to duck into a Gentleman's Club, have a G&T, and discuss a wager about getting around the world within a short span of time, or perhaps finding a mythical African lake or great gem in the Raj. Late Victorian Era forever.

The old ship was a reconstruction of Sir Francis Drake's ship, Golden Hind. I remember visiting it on a school trip back in the early 90s when it was up in Salford Quays.

Wow! That looked absolutely terrifying & exciting in equal amounts, so good to watch all three different perspectives but not something I could do for a million pounds!!!!

The sailing ship is the golden Hind. The clue is the golden deer on the stern. This is a replica of the ship in which Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated the world

Oh, London !!! Thanks for all the memories.From 1949 to 1966 I spent a lot of time in London and it is still (I have lived in North America since 1966) very, very evocative. We lived in Paulton Square, Chelsea and I attended the Lycee Francais . Many walks along the Embankment. In 1958 we moved to Woolwich on Mill Lane, right by the Barracks and I took my GCEs at Shooter's Hill GS before being accepted into what was then Westminster Technical College Hotel School, commuting back and forth into Charing Cross Station. Part of my training was at the Mayfair Hotel and also at the Charing Cross Hotel. During this time I really got to know The City, Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, Leicester Square and it's quintessential movie theaters, Pubbing at The Prospect of Whitby ( named after the North Sea port next to Scarborough, North Yorkshire, where I was born.) After watching the Royal Wedding on The Mall, I raced to stand 20 feet from Princess Margaret and AAJ at the Tower of London as they boarded the Britannia for their honeymoon. My last touch to the Capital City was when I ran an Off License in Enfield, N.London before taking the boat to Montreal, Canada.

It is, I think, fairly easy to see why CtC is (one of) the most popular narrowbeam boating videos. David has a keen eye for scenery, he lovingly rests his camera on scenes just next to the main event, the pacing of the videos is exemplary so that effective storytelling takes place (including an actual story line), nice music also, the voice-over is emphatic and easy to follow and the selfies-with-text (don't know the technical term) drive home a point and are taut, no wobbles. It's almost as if there is a professional at work here.... now wait....

I've been on the Thames of a 180-foot tall ship but I imagine on a narrowboat it's rather different... superb stuff

I was an American expat living and studying in London from 2004-2007, and really miss London and the UK today and hope to move back across the pond one day. There are so many familiar sights to me along the Thames, from when I used to walk down from Russell Square to Guy's Hospital campus of King's College London at London Bridge every day to go to class there.

i believe that super yacht belongs to joe lewis, the owner of spurs, there was a bit in the tabloids that the local residents were complaining that his boat was blocking their sunlight!

I love these Narrowboats. They would capsize in my area in very little time. Cape Cod bay would turn the boat over on a calm day. Thames seemed rather calm but your all so used to boating in 3’ of calm water after all. I’m so glad you made it in one piece. I know (many) others have already answered that the old sailing ship is a replica of Sir Francis Drake's ship, 'The Golden Hind', but I am always particularly happy to see it as I am descended from the Drake family (although not Sir Francis himself, as he never had any children). Yep, that's my one (distant) claim to fame. Anyway, thank you for the great tour!

I'm certain I've said this before, but if there were BAFTA awards for British vloggers then I can't imagine in what category you wouldn't be carrying home a golden award. Thank you for sharing your experience. I had never heard of narrowboats or the UK canals until seeing a random KZfaq video of yours. After viewing the video I visited your site and watched all 144+ videos in order and “Liked” them all over the past few weeks. I am very envious. I finished the last video this morning and will now investigate how to go about renting a narrowboat in the UK for a week or so to see if it is something we may like to do long-term. At the very least you have opened my eyes to a different way of living, and one day we may actually take the plunge (although not literally into the canal water apparently). I was fortunate enough to cruise along the Thames on a tall ship. Tower Bridge was raised for us. Amazing experience.

I have gone through all four seasons of Cruising the Cut on Amazon Prime. Of those who have such programs there, I like yours the best. You make me want to come over to do some narrowboat cruising in the UK. I am a lifelong boater over here in the states. I've boated waters from the Great Lakes, large rivers and waters in the southeastern US including the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida. I really love this video going up the Thames, seeing all the new construction going on in and around London. I cannot believe it happened, but at the end of this video as you all locked through the lock and were mooring up, off on that waterway just past the waterway you all moored, was a boat tied up that is a sister boat to one I owned, a 70' Monticello River Yacht. We ran ours on the Ohio out of Cincinnati, Ohio. These boats were built in Kentucky. Most of them wound up on the Ohio, some on the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, a few down in Florida and at least one in New Orleans on the Mississippi. One of them made it to The River Thames. It had been on the market for a few years. I hoped that by some chance I might see that Monticello in this video. I can't believe that at the end of your video, in the background was that boat. If you stop the video at 17:37, looking back behind the lock to where some boats are tied up, you can see the Monticello. It has a black cover over the front deck. I know why someone went to the expense to have that boat shipped "across the pond" on a yacht transport vessel, it looks like it is wonderful to boat the waterways of the UK. You are living a great life, running your boat on the canals of the UK. I hope Amazon gives you another season or two, but I will be checking out your KZfaq videos.

That anchored barge "Bin it for the thames" is a garbage collection system using the flow of the river to wash floating trash into a bin to be removed.

David: So many memories, As I said previously we stayed at the Premier Inn next to the London Bridge and we walked all along the River on both sides walked through the tunnels so many pleasant memories. So much of our history was based on British history and Geography. Walking through history wrings so much to life and makes it much more relevant. Looking to retire next year and talking to the wife about a 2- 3 week vacation on a hire boat in Southern England. I grew up fishing, swimming, and boating on the Columbia river and it's tributaries in America's Pacific Northwest. I must say, one glance and I instantly recognized the replica of the Golden Hind. This is one of my favorite videos you have done. Amazing view of London that I haven't really seen anywhere else. While I love the green scenery and little towns London truly is a magnificent looking city that is now on my bucket list to visit.

To use words like you might: "That was lovely." I thoroughly enjoyed the whole journey. I would love to do it on a narrowboat. It took me between 2-1/2 to 3 hours to watch it. I kept stopping and looking at something or other on Google Maps or Google Earth. I was down on street view in London many times to look at this shop or that or to study the bridges. It was wonderful. I once read on another website that "we learn more by wandering than we do by searching". Boy oh boy did I learn on this one. Thank you so much David. Keep it up.

I can only imagine his reaction to coming out of the Trent Severn and onto the great lakes. Even in a boat more than twice as wide, with a much deeper draft, the lakes can be pretty rough and intimidating.

That was a really wonderful remembrance of a trip I took to London in February 1985. I found the tower to be absolutely awesome. I love to learn about the history of the UK. I will return.

7:10 when I was a kid I assumed that Tower Bridge was as old as the Tower of London (leave me alone children have a very poor grasp of time) and it absolutely blew me away to find out how "new" it actually was. ANYWAY what i actually wanted to say was when I was a kid I was completely obsessed with the Tudors and this whole video reminds me of queens going on royal barges to either their death or their pre coronation night at the Tower. I wanna make this journey one day except hopefully without being beheaded at a later date.

I was in the UK Sea Scouts, 7th Feltham. We rowed on the river Thames sometimes in regattas in gigs, and sometimes in little rowing boats. It is where I learned the hard way that it is much better to row upstream first then downstream. Great vlog thank you.

I have done this trip many times. A more interesting journey in a narrow boat is to turn left out of Limehouse and turn right at the Medway. Very choppy ride as there are quite a number of standing waves caused by the flow of the Thames going over uneven river bed. Definitely need a cratch cover for this journey! The boat we were paired with was rather slow and we got to the Medway a little later than ideal. During the turn I actually saw the bottom of the boat in front as it went over the standing waves. We all made it through the lock on the Medway!

Here in North Fla weve got the St. Johns River is quite large similiar to the Thames ,very strong current here which changes direction .. Fun river to cruise on. Its nice to see the Thames from a different point of view. Thanks..

I'm a big American River boat fan, I've worked on sternwheeler cruiseships on the Columbia and Mississippi rivers...I'm obsessed with cruising a narrowboat now. P.S. The Columbia River between Washington and Oregon have some pretty cool gate locks you'd like.

The ship well spotted by the lady "Golden Hind" was fitted with her first VHF comms by me in the early 1970's. The aerials had to be hidden in the rigging by using marlin twine wrapped around them.

Seeing a canal boat taking on that chop makes be a bit uncomfortable. I'm sure it was safe, but it's clearly not what they're made for! Also, hearing an American accent from a narrowboat driver is a bit of a shock. I do wish we had canals to cruise around over here. :

This was extra fascinating for me because for most of my working life I commuted to London and wouldnt have worked anywhere else. It was so interesting to see all the landmarks from a narrowboat on the river when I was used to see them from dry land!

Excellent Vlog David. I rowed down the Thames, for Charity, when i was 12 years old with 2nd Fareham Sea Scouts. Its definitely a memory I'll have forever. I recommend it to anyone old or young. Maybe not the rowing part but definitely grab a boat with an Engine and do it.

We went from from Teddington to limehouse basin then to Paddington Basin then back to Limehouse then Teddington then to Abington on our 65 ft Narrowboat great trip

From what I could see I thought the boat handled it all pretty well, sufficiently stable for sure. I enjoyed seeing some of London's quirky architecture from the river side. Parliament located next to a river is a thing? Ours here in Canada is a stone's throw away from the Ottawa River. I worked there for 13 years for Hansard on the floor of the House taking the record and also the records of literally thousands of committees in the various blocks. Bit of trivia: The width of the aisle down the centre of the House is measured not in feet but as two and a half sword lengths. The reason is obvious of course though now outdated. Glad it was 2.5 because I was sitting in the centre of the aisle...mind you according to Parliamentary tradition the Hansard people are invisible to the Members, Honourable and otherwise.
