My journey down the Staffs & Worcester canal continues, picking up from Compton where I moored at the end of the last vlog, and heading south through Kidderminster and eventually ending up in Stourport.
En route I see an unusual butty and get thoroughly whacked on the nose by another boat exiting a lock.

David, I admire your forbearance in not giving that fool who collided with your boat a serve for his cheek in claiming it was your fault for tying up too close - some simply can’t accept responsibility for their actions - always someone else’s fault ! Like you, I’d have stopped directly opposite the beautiful garden, simply to nark the owners 🙁 thanks for the adventure 👌👏👏👏👏👏

That property with the polite notice would make me moor opposite their bungalow and I would put a notice in my window which says "Polite notice please do not look out of your window whilst I am moored here. Thank you for your co-operation" Great Vlog David

That boater that rammed you was going a bit fast too. I think he could have avoided you if he has taken a bit more time to control his exit from the lock. Then to have the nerve to blame you when he was the one in motion. If I ram a car in a parking space as I leave a parking lot can I say, well it is the other driver's fault because he didn't park in his spot just right? I think that boater knew he was wrong and was embarrassed and tried to offset that by attempting to make it your fault.

I cannot believe that joker came out of the lock so fast and then had the audacity to criticize (I had to double check the video speed was set to normal because I thought it couldn't be that quick). Also, did his travel mug say "The Boss" -- it looks like it, such class. You sir a much better person than I; not only would I have felt obliged to point out the error in his ways in the moment, I don't think I would have bothered with all the extra effort blurring his face. If he wants to be cheeky, then clearly he should be proud. And then the "Moor Elsewhere" folks -- sounds like the folks complaining about kids being too loud in the playground next door that was there before they moved in. Absolute... uh what's appropriate term for them... bilgefilth? bilgefeeder? bilgetwat? smh

Your bump at the lock reminds me of my experience this week in Gambia. I was sitting in stationary traffic when the vehicle behind crashed in to me. He swerved to avoid me and partly landed on the central reservation but still caught my drivers side rear wing. The police confiscated my licence and gave me a document saying I'm being investigated for careless driving! 😂

The V tailed butty.... so I thought I just imagined it! My two brothers and I have been having a winter long technical discussion on what size of canal boat fleet we would need to allow all possible variations of our current nuclear family to cruise ( four adult males two in their late 20s two in their mid 40s , three wives and at least one mother , age redacted, a male and female in their late teens early 20s, three children newborn to kindergarten currently, plus a sampling of other likely relatives and friends at times. Our solution was a small fleet of boats of different configurations that would fit in most if not all locks augmented by shorter craft that could be independently powered but mostly would be towed aft, towed sidecar style, or mounted forward and pushed. I thought I had seen a V notch butty on a Google image search but I wasn’t sure if I building my dreams on a joke

Funny I was thinking the same, he seemed to just go full throttle straight out of the lock. He'd have definitely got a mouthful from me. Also, if you have a collision on the canal, are you not obliged to stop, like you are with cars? I mean, if someone clipped your parked car, shouted at you then made off, you would be reporting it to the police right?

Hitting the Like button adds nothing financially but makes KZfaq more likely to recommend the video to other people. The only thing that makes me any money is when people actually watch (at least a decent part of) the adverts, if KZfaq plays them.

Wondering about the boat coming out of the lock. Couldn't he have stopped his boat by reversing the engine and given you a chance to get out of his way? You could see how it was going to end up and so could he. Strange - was it the, "I'll show you," mentality or the, "I can't be bothered" personality? Oh, well.

A lot of people were very critical of Mr Clumsyboatdriver, thank you Steve L, my name cannot go on here. You have this nut on video you should hand a copy to the CRT, clearly he is not a responsible boater and flees the screen after an accident, that was way past a brush. How many other boats has he damaged and worse their was likely alcohol involved and one day someone will get badly hurt if it has not already occurred. That was hard enough to dump you off the stern into his path.

I totally agree if you buy a dwelling of any type next to the canal it also comes with boats the sights and the sounds of canal life. On seeing that sign I am afraid I would be chucking the boat into revers with lots of chugging and blowing on my steam whistle until I am directly across from the sign and mooring up for the time allowed on that stretch. When I first got my boat I was travelling up the Coventry canal heading home the boat developed a fault and I had to stop right away. When had started to repair the boat engine room boards up prior to that we had drifted to a stop across from some new houses I never gave it a thought we just had to mend it then move on if we could. A man shouted at us you can't stop there I informed him I had broken down his reply was he was not bothered you can't stop there. I then gave him my reply bearing in mind my new home had just made nasty noises and ground to a halt and all I got was this burk coming out with this drivel. I said to him that until it's mended I would not be going anywhere and if he would like to give us a hand that would be nice but if he was going to continue shouting at me he would find the spanner I was holding would need removal with the help of A&E from a internal cavity. He didn't offer no more advice and we did move on when we was able to. Afterwards my thoughts were I am sure the canal came first.

I completely agree, and can think of so many signs I'd be tempted to temporarily mount whilst moored on the tow path side, e.g. "We respectfully suggest that those who do not enjoy the canal character live elsewhere." or, "Those who do not abide temporary neighbors legally mooring nearby perhaps would be happier living elsewhere." Or maybe, "Narrowboats have been mooring here since xxxx." And you are right, Michael Seddon, like airports, the canals came first, then people moved in for some of the pleasantries, but are not willing to embrace all of the canal ambiance. My guess is that canal frontage value carries a premium, to really frost the cake.

Your vlog made me fell peaceful today. Thank you for sharing. That bloke that hit you could of said he was sorry for hitting you. People knot paying attention just make me mad. You take pride in trying to take care of your stuff then others don't give a crap & bash your stuff. Oh gets me heated. I think I'm more upset then you. lol.. And it's your boat. Well you have a great rest of your week. Be safe on the water, Chris

The Stewponey was a pub/Hotel, with a 30s Deco Lido. The name came about because the man who had it built and owned it went to Estepona in Spain and met his wife, a Spanish senorita. He brought her home with him, they started the hotel, but us Black Country folk struggled with Estepona, so it became Stewponey. She was apparently a much loved lady who took great care of people in need. The hotel was a landmark. It is long gone, but the developers who built an estate on the land kept the name, so my friend lives at Stewponey! Nothing sinister about it at all.

I was similarly offended by another of those 'polite' notices on the Lancaster Canal a while ago. Good to know I'm not alone in my (maybe somewhat disproportionate) outrage and immediate desire to do the opposite! Would be fun to have a photographic collection of these obnoxious signs wherever they are spotted on the Cut. Am now working my way through your excellent vlogs from the beginning after hopping about a bit - very entertaining and a wealth of information for a prospective canal wanderer. thank you!

Chances... just this morning I read about the Bratch Locks in John Liley's The Journey of the Swan. A wonderful nugget of canal history and the only ones like them on the system. Mostly because they learned how bloody stupid it was quite quickly! Still... smashing that you included it.

David Lovely scenery, really nice. Again looking at the map I just would not have expected it. That collision! you must have been furious. The angle on exiting that lock looked awkward due to the lock design, but the strange things was, as you pointed out, the collision appeared inevitable from some way out, but no attempt seemed to be made to slow down - and then claiming it was your fault, unbelievable! Re staircase locks. There is a 3 lock staircase at Grindley Brook on the Llangollen. At non peak times of the year you have to operate it yourself. It is a real bottleneck in summer so the operators are there in summer to calm and organise the frustrated queues of boaters as much as to operate the locks I was told. Unlike single locks, you obviously can cause quite a flood if you get a staircase wrong. Also, they often differ, apparently at Grindley Brook you have to half fill the middle lock to a marker before you commence the descent sequence. If you ever have to operate a staircase on your own it would be very interesting and helpful to see you do it in some detail, as operating a staircase lock is an aspect of canal boating that I have yet to take on and a task that fills me with some trepidation. Mike

That staircase sounds interesting! I wouldn't worry about them; I've done two now (both a pair of locks, in sequence) and you just need to ensure they're filled / emptied per the instructions and don't take anyone else's advice on how it should be done (I went in one with a pair of "experienced" boaters and they promptly emptied both chambers, where the top one needed to be full!)

loving that don't more opposite the bungalow sign.. reminds me of the boater down from the boat inn cheddleton who shouted at me on the road opposite while parked up in my camper for a night.. Apparently our 60 k motorhomes make us gypsies and we pay no tax and we should beep beep move on.. and far worse. it was amusing to record it and play it back full volume through vehicle stereo while she sat outside the pub for all to hear !!!

We had our wedding reception in 1984 at the Stewponey Inn which was a landmark that used to be near the canal. It’s been knocked down now for houses. We lived in Stourbridge prior to emigrating to Canada in 2004. Great part of the canal system. Steeped in history.

The Dunsley tunnel reminded me. A couple of years ago I was reading a short article about someone cycling from Sandwell Valley to Aldridge along the Rushall canal. From memory they got off when the canal changes name to the Daw End Branch. At one point in the article they said they went through a tunnel. I'm not sure where the tunnel is. there are wide road bridges under main roads. Plus I thought tunnels went through hills. Not over the top. As there is 9 locks on the Rushall canal and they still have at least 2 or 3 locks to get to the top.

sleeping bag. I was out to sea in a choppy sea. old rope around my prop. I was on my own. I am a male and was 25 at the time. there's only one way to clear the rope wrapped around. and that is to dive in and cut it free. so in I jumped with a rope around my waist so as I and the boat did not separate and I drift away, after much cussing got prop free but trying to get back in around the carvel-built boat was very exhausting, nowhere to latch your feet on, so, John, I would have given anything for your hatch. Enjoy all your Vids and clear presenting so big thanks. I`m 80 plus now armchair sailer.

The scenery along this particular leg I would personally rate among the top I've seen. I particularly enjoy your format of chatty narrative, sans distracting music, with insertions of points of interest. Many things, big & small that catch the eye, i.e. anglers with extremely long poles, a prowling cat, bumper boats at a lock entrance, MGB in bristol condition, grazing donkeys, staircase of locks, burst of color, & Devil's Den, etc. A couple of questions, if I might: (1) What is the large pipe behind you & overhead, seen behind you after leaving the last locks before Swindon? Irrigation water? (2) Are most narrowboats painted a dark color for a practical reason, tradition, or aesthetics? (The "look" is great, and most look well-kept!) Thanks!
@CruisingTheCut
@CruisingTheCut 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. No idea about the pipe; could be water, gas, oil, electric... I suppose it must be tradition, though you sometimes see brightly coloured ones. Cheers.
