To give an analysis closer to reality (even tho yours if great), in Italy they were plenty earthquakes that destroyed many small villages or weakened parts of small cities. Therefor it's not unusual to find people living in semi-abandoned villages. And just like in Inferno, some house are getting repaired some not and left. So that's how you end up with a weird feeling on Inferno

bricked of windows and doors are common in europe lol, we have them everywhere in england alot of old houses specifically have alot of bricked up windows as there used to be a window tax as they were a good way to gaige wealth
