I have recovered a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and was attempting to boot to a bootable USB drive to reconfigure. Now, only the BitLocker recovery screen appears.
Looked at several other posts, but I can't get past this screen. I am prepared to format the drive, but I can't get any further. Is there anything else that can be done or is this unit just toast?
Windows 8 and 10 let you to create a recovery drive (USB) or system repair disc (CD or DVD) that you can use to troubleshoot and restore your computer. Each type of recovery media gives you access to Windows’ advanced startup options, but there are differences between the two options.
The system repair disc has been around since the Windows 7 days. It is a bootable CD/DVD that contains tools you can use to troubleshoot Windows when it won’t start correctly. The system repair disc also gives you tools for restoring your PC from an image backup that you’ve created. The recovery drive is new to Windows 8 and 10. It’s a bootable USB drive that gives you access to the same troubleshooting tools as a system repair disc, but also allows you to reinstall Windows if it comes to that. To achieve this, the recovery drive actually copies the system files necessary for reinstallation from your current PC.

Hi I have got the same issue and i prepared the USB, but when i was about to install the window, i got the message right at start that a media driver your computer needs is missing. It is not making the window installation progress. Can you guide in this regard?

I deleted all the files that came up on the hard drive apart from recovery file. When i installed the windows, i thought it was going to ask me for the serial key but it never so once again nice one for making this video.

I cannot get my surface pro to to same screen that you got after holding volume down and pressing the power button. It still prompts me for my password. I did try the password reset option with the USB, but it is saying it's not a valid reboot device. Any advice?

This happened to me, but I freaked out as I had lost access to the pc and installed linux on it, and wiped my windows partition but that was my last windows10 device so I am unable to create another usb to boot it back into windows, as the machine was designed for windows, performance on linux isn't that great, but now I'm stuck I have a desktop pc running linux mint and now a surface pro 7 running linux mint, all my bootable usbs are for linux and now I honestly don't know what to do now to get it back on its suited os.

I actually bought a windows 10 usb drive. When I put it in and try to boot up from the USB, it does not do it. I seleceted the drive to start from in the management system, but no luck....still goes back to the loop. Any thoughts?

So close...This is driving me crazy. I get as far as your first attempt where you could not delete the partitions because of BitLocker. I am not clear on how you are getting around that? I tried the down-volume / power button but that doesn't seem to do anything differently for me.

As some other comments say.. hold the volume +UP+ button and press the power button. Hold the volume + button until the UEFI screen appears. Definitely also had to go download the surface drivers bc I was not able to connect to WiFi, use the touch screen or pen, etc. Hopefully this helps you as much as it did me! TYSM!!!

Thank so much this worked for me! If anyone else has a problem where when you get to the Windows Setup screen, after resetting with the USB, and you lose the cursor (the screen seems like it is frozen and unresponsive) then you'll need to plug in an external mouse - I spent ages restarting it thinking the screen had frozen but I just needed to plug in a mouse

i have an issue where my config profile is all setup correctly but when i activate bitlocker on Surface it is not asking me to setup the pin.can someone please help me and tell me what am i doing wrong?it just starts encrypting the drive.

Update. I guess what the common sense i was suppose to have was you MUST convert the iso file to a bootable drive and my permissions weren't in place wich is why i needed this in the first place the driver on the microsoft website i wasn't able to open it and install maybe because of my permissions but i used rufus and all is good thank you very much for this hope this also helps someone

Thank you so much it helped me a lot. However, one has to realise that most of the usage is impossible without the keyboard as Windows does not have the touchscreen driver built-in. I only purchased the Microsoft Pen and that does not work at all. I had to purchase the keyboard to get everything going. Please realise this. The documentation is excellent and I thank the publisher for the informative and very helpful video. Well done! The keyboard is anything good for all sorts of things regardless of the expenses. :)

For anyone that cannot get the volume UP (Not the Down) button working to get in to Surface UEFI, if you go into advanced options and click CMD and do a diskpart clean on the drive then the restart will also drop you into the Surface UEFI menu to change boot devices. This also saves having to remove all the partitions as the clean does this for you.

This is great but I'm not even sure if this what I need isn't up my Laptop and didn't use it for a couple of months long story simply put not too computer save and too much work to transfer my files from my old to the new so fast forward 2 months now I have time to move my files and I turn on the surface and it wants my pin number and I don't remember it or even writing it down so now what ...I have this brand new thing and I can't even get pass the sign in screen I haven't even used it yet for any thing

I attempted to reset my Surface Pro 5th Gen after it developed faults. It failed. I got an error message to say the installation failed and to hit ok to reinstall. I click ok and it just comes back to the same error message in a loop. I've created a usb recovery image and followed the directions on Microsoft support. (I went to BIOS first and made sure that USB was the first boot option.) I held vol down until the spinning circle, got to enter language and keyboard. Went to troubleshooting and there was no option to Recover from a Drive. All other options just create a blue screen loop. If I go to the screen with Choose an Option and tried Use a Device but it just restarts back to the same blue screen. Any ideas?? 🤣 I have used a recovery usb before on a Lenovo laptop and it worked perfectly!

I have a much bigger problem... In the excitement of receiving my new surface pro 6.. I totally locked the Bios system with a password and forgot it. Device is working fine But Bios is locked, and also I can not boot from a usb stick because genius as I am, I also locked it. How can I get out of this problem.

This makes no sense though.. Bitlocler locks the disk from editing. How is the disk getting removed? I am looking to dual boot my surface pro 4, want to add Linux, but I see that unless I remove Bitlocler I cannot do this. No idea where is my bit locker code or what, is it in the manual for surface pro. I remember ages ago, adding a dual boot on his laptop, and the original partition and recovery were just not formattable or deletable.

You CAN delete it all, so in essence the tablet just becomes a HDD. As you can see that's what i did in the video, then loaded windows 10 and installed all the drivers

I’m just letting you know I had my computer sitting for about 2 years, and finally got around to calling Microsoft about it. Their process is different and so long to bypass the bitlocker! Also he said if their process over the phone didn’t work it would need to go in for service $300 estimate (probably more). So thank you again! I hit that like and subscribe! Much appreciated!

Just to clarify - Will this get me into a laptop running 8.1 that the owner forgot her admin password. Not concerned about wiping the drive clean. After which, she'll have Windows 10? I've got the time to do this. Right now, this laptop is useless. Thanks CSS.

That kinda the same issue I had, so I don't see why that wouldn't work. Basically you are wiping the internal storage of everything then reinstalling the operating system

I got myself stuck in Recovery Mode on the same type of device (and no way to get out!). I'm going to do exactly these steps, but wondering, did it ask you to type in your Windows 10 Product Key when you installed the new OS? My device doesn't have one on the device itself, but hoping that because it is clearly an OEM product, I won't have to? If not, I need to figure out how to recover the Product Key before I do this process.

If you haven't already deleted your files you can try to go into the bios and make sure that the time is set correctly first. BitLocker is dependent on the time being right on the system and will result in this screen if the system time is off.

I have the same question here. This method only wipes the HDD but the UEFI/BIOS password is still intact. How to get rid of that? I see he replied but his reply isn't expanding to show it. Did you manage to erase the UEFI Password and get into the BIOS?
