Sweet video! About a year ago, I was able to get a ride in a GP40-2 for about a mile. Very exciting, and the crew was very friendly and generous to let me.

I always strive to protect the engineer since it is a privilege to see what they see and they are taking the risk on their job and none have to let anybody up, yet they still do because they are kind enough to.

Thanks for the reply. I was looking at some old photos from the early seventies and found a old Poloroid Sx70 picture i took in 1972 of my then girlfriend on the stairs of a Mo-Pac engine at the ( long gone roundhouse and turntable )on Hall Street across from the Pic and Pull salvage yard. I might get the oppurtunity to do that one day, but right now i have my observation locations for slow trains and fast ones.Manchester between Macklind and Hampton is a good spot for not having to go far.

It must be awesome working on these locos. I work on buses so the next step for me is light rail, but these would be so AWESOME to work on, In my opinion you have a great job which has many interesting facts, just the fact that you are going many places alone is a great perk, I have never worked in cold weather as I am in SoCal, but I understand that you guys are out in all types of weather and always on call. Thank you for sharing it is appreciated.

Very nice video. You are lucky. You got to ride in the cab of a GE C40-8. I love them. Good ol' standard cabs without the new engines that purr all the time. A true GE chugs and these new GEVOs just are not fitting the bill. Awesome video.

Well it's hard to give you a definite answer. It's very hard now days to get up into the cab with all the rules and regulations. The way I have gotten my opportunities to get in the cab all came from employees that I've known. I'd say your best option is to get to know some of the railroaders around there. There is never a guarantee due to the fact that getting caught letting civilians into the cab is an instant termination. You can also try contacting the railroad, but the chances are very slim

This was idling yard power. This was not on an assigned train or job. No crew called for it either. It doesn't matter anyway since I had authorization from the yardmaster.

Two major factors are the train's schedule and the crew's mood. I was allowed to ride in a solo locomotive because the crew was VERY friendly and they said they had time to burn. I was just filming them and they stopped and offered a ride.

@jpaufsc You were disturbing the peace - needlessly. At least when I did, it was for a purpose - grade crossings. Thanks fo the explanation. Neverev a cold engine. Keep RPMs as low as possible without stalling the cold engine. Same applies to automobilengines.
