Little late to the game here...however, if you want to charge your lightning port iPad and use a USB audio interface at the same time, all you need is the Apple camera kit adapter (which you can still get on Amazon) that has both a lightning and USB port. The expanded camera kit adapter connects to the to the iPad via the lightning interface. The camera kit adapter then takes a lightning input from a power brick to power the iPad, and also lets you connect an audio interface via USB. Additionally, if you are using something like a 3rd gen Focusrite 2i2 or 4i4, which has a USB-C port, you can connect that to the adapter with a USB-C to USB cable and power the Focusrite from the same adapter that is powering your iPad. Thanks for the vid...was just looking at the Cubase app for iPad and it this vid was a good overview.

Make sure in your settings you have audio engine latency turned off its supposed to help with multi core rendering but all it does is use to much power. I’ve found that it works better with it off

The timeline doesn’t snap normally. It’s very granular which is great but building songs is very fidgety so right now it’s better for cues I’m using the iPad Pros to control Logic Pro x with Logic remote which is incredible. Give it a try . I struggled with the iOS platform not providing a proper native daw like Apples own Logic Pro and realized apple isn’t really excited about the iPads being a device aimed at professionals so I went all in with the studio and the new iPad Pro m1 and all the trimmings. Now everything is perfect and the iPad Pro has many more useful roles as a synth and also a super controller that works better than anything third party I have used so now Logic “is “ a touch daw for professionals . ✌️👽

Great review and some important truths! I’ve been playing with iOS music production for 2 years (iPad Pro 12.9” 2020) and it’s fun, but then I wonder - why? I’m using Cubasis 3, BM3, Koala, and a dozen synths, VSTs and plugins and as you keenly point out; it’s not as good as Logic on a MacBook. The iPad is neato and a great “ideas” device, but for music production I often wonder why I’m toiling with apps and instruments that are “less”? Even the low cost hype is a myth. By the time you buy a DAW like Cubasis, a mixer like AUM, a midi sequencer, and a dozen instruments and plugins you’ve spent $500+ (albeit $10 - $40 at a time).

I just want to help you out here if you need it! Seeing as I just bought the new 12.9” iPad Pro.. The 1tb and 2tb iPad Pro’s will have 16gb of ram, which can be very helpful for us when it comes to DAW’s and rendering video on these M1 devices. I saw some numbers when I was looking into M1 performance, and the RAM goes a long way in those tasks-getting near base Mac Pro speeds!

You say it is “finally now a viable production tool” ? LOL it has always been a powerhouse for many many years now. The great and legendary MADLIB produced the entire Freddie Gibbs album “BANDANNA” with just the iPad and I have used it to track and mix more than 15 full length projects in Auria Pro and even mastered a few songs with the iPad. Steinberg/Yamaha should develop an audio and midi interface with mix control surface (with power) specifically for iPad. That SUB25 on your desk is an excellent controller for micrologue or Model D. Stick to AU3 external instruments and FX. Pass on the inter app stuff for best stability.

Good suggestion about AU3, my experience is very limited here! And yes, I would LOVE a Steinberg controller. I never used to be a hands-on tactile guy, but once you embrace hardware like maschine, the act of making music becomes more like playing an instrument!

Great overview. Was thinking about grabbing Cubasis as it’s on sale. BTW, there’s also a Lighting to USB connector from Apple that also has an additional Lightning In connector so that you may connect it to a charger or battery pack. That’ll solve the battery drain issue!

My current iPad is way too old and weak for much more than midi control and a few standalone audio apps functioning effectively as virtual analog synths or sample players. But the brand new M1 based iPad may just be a milestone for more fully featured music production. If you ever get one, that would be a really interesting video - possibly even using the same project as today’s great video.
@jefgibbons
@jefgibbons 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nico! I was wondering what your take on iPads was... It has SO much potential, but development is painfully slow it seems. I attribute that to the fact that developers just can't make much money given the low (cost) bar set for paid apps. I can't imagine too many of these companies are seeing huge profits on their iOS apps, but I think that'll change with the M1!
@nico5
@nico5 3 жыл бұрын
@@jefgibbons I think app pricing patterns in general and the 30% cut Apple takes are worse barriers than CPU and other hardware limitations. It makes it very difficult to make a living with complex niche products like DAWs. Side note: For now, I’m comparing Cubasis more to a Portastudio or field recorder than a DAW. And in that context a lot of features and limitations look quite different.

Fair assessment. appreciate that you’re not predetermined to trash mobile recording like many, many other videos of this sort. To paraphrase Dr Strangelove, crossfading is not only possible, it is essential. You simply split your tracks at the edit point and pull up or down on the corner, depending on if it’s an In or Out. But of course it goes without saying your results may have been better with a 2021 iPad Pro which is not out for another week or more. Up to 16 gb RAM what what

I think the iPad is a fantastic platform for music production, but when it comes down to music recording and editing, it's nowhere near as good as a desktop DAW. It sure can do the basic, essential stuff, but the moment you need more advanced tools, it falls short. Ipad DAWs are still young, though. Still far behind desktop capabilities, but it will get there, eventually.

Lately, I've been using Cubasis 2 on a 2017 iPad Pro trying to decide if I should transition from Garageband to Cubasis but the app's interface, at least in V2, is quite messy and you can spend a lot of time scrolling, scrolling, scrolling looking for that just-right instrument. It's not organized well. For example, why are the bass sounds not grouped all together? Having said all that, I still find the app a little addictive and I'm considering springing for V.3 since it's currently on sale because I'm quite bored with the instruments in Garageband (although it's hard to beat their virtual drummers). I have 0 interest in Logic Pro due to it's subscription model so it seems like Cubasis 3 is the logical step up from Garageband.

iPads and Macs are now on the same chip. Still super early but just sayin'. IMO Windows touch screen tablets went all in way too early but with Apple I think they are going the other extreme with "A laptop is for this and an iPad is for this". I predict within 5 years they'll be able to cut that difference and those training wheels loose, and even with Microsoft's early adoption of attempting to blur those lines you'll have a far better experience with Apple. I use Windows hybrids, not a good time for anything high end, or honestly, even mid end.

The fact that c3 runs on older iPads does not make it better. Anyway I dont get any recurring bugs that I can say. Maybe you are doing things that I don't do. We all have our own ways to work especially on complex software. But I like c3 too and use it often. I don't think it is useful to say one is better or worse. No grouping (glue) of (audio) objects!?! No ripple editing! Region selection is a pain in the... No custom shortcuts! FX cause audible phasing. This software is way below of what is possible and neccessary - probably on purpose (to move people to Cubase eventually). Cubasis is only one step above garage band and cannot be used for professional work thus it's nothing more than a toy - and an expensive one at that. Clever but lame business model - typical of Yamaha.

Man I guess I just need to switch DAWs again. Cubasis is pretty weak overall. Idk understand why they can’t just make it like Cubase. What is this amateur hour? The norm is set at 48k sample rate. For what?
