We used to hammer the drag down and pull them away from the wreck with the boat when they took the bait off of Key Largo. This was in 1985 when I mated at Holiday Isles charter boat dock. Great fishing back then. Great video man.

I haven’t done it in 20 years. Use to fish off ocean reef club. Got it down pretty good. We liked using down riggers, long 130lb leaders. I used triple strength 10/0 on the tail and a triple strength 10/0 treble hook on the horn and use a thick rubber band to keep your leader close to the body. The trebble gets em! Tight lines

I wondered what it would look like to use 10$ to get a nickel. You’d have to like that snapper to send down lobster on a hook.

I caught a 115 lbs cubera many years ago, it's my one and done fish, caught off a wreck in 225 ft of water. Caught during the day.

if you go to costa rica you can catch them off the beach or rocks with big ole poppers or glide baits and its a lot of fun

I wonder when rod builders are going to redesign rod butts to allow a low center of gravity and put the reel low and close to the body. I caught a yellowfin on a penn rod that had a custom butt that was about 8 inches long using a fighting harness and I wore that yellowfin out. The rod was a prototype on a captain’s boat in kw. I just wonder why I don’t see rods built like that????

We still slay the Cubera off of Duck Key every year. Man they are so fun to catch and eat. Duck Key right out of Hawks Cay is the sweet spot for the big boys!!!

This is cool to watch. It’s not new though. My grandfather (I’m 66) used to use lobster for bait too. He caught tons of big Jewfish and Cubera Snappers. He was known for catching huge fish.

What did you use for a rod?

Beautiful Snapper's here in Florida and I'm a Florida Boy just going to hard using lobster instead of eating. I chartered out of the Puerto Vallarta for area and we catch Pargo or Dog tooth snapper off the beach but the big ones are further out my biggest off the beach is 22 lbs feeding with Snook and Barracuda and offshore 61 lbs and I wrote the fishing report for Vallarta english paper and a guy said he caught a 90 pounder on rod and reel would of been a record but looking at the fish it had a hole almost in the middle no way a gaff he speared it diving but was hoping I would verify it of course I didn't but what a fish. Will be down there and get me one of those. Myles Lineberger

Nice Cabrera guys, you what would be great. Take a picture and let it go. They are very slow growing fish and in no way taste as good as lobster. Just because you catch it, doesn't mean you should kill it. Guess east coast practice catching kill. West coast it's about catch n release.
