If you're interested in the exact stove we purchased then be sure to check it out here: tinyurl.com/mu57mzeu
We bought a Cubic Mini Wood stove, this model "The Grizzly" for our 40 year old, 38ft sailing boat. In the video we get the Cubic Mini Wood burner out of the box and started our first fire in it.
The full installation video for the Cubic (Grizzly) wood burning stove will be out next week, this really is just to share our first impressions with you all. If any of your have any suggestions regarding the wood stove being on a boat then please do jump into the comments and share your thoughts with us all.

Good choice! We have had the same model for a while. This is our 5th winter with it installed on our 40 foot sailboat. If anything you will find that the boat gets too hot. As I write this comment it's about minus 3 outside and a toasty 23 in the cabin. We burn a mix of whatever is available- logs, compressed wood, coal and use a thing called a night briquette which is super for keeping the thing in through the night hours without having to continuously stoke the fire every two hours or so. Two night briquettes when we go to bed will keep enough heat in the fire to relight first thing in the morning with a few bits of kindling. It's a learning curve to get the best out of it, learn the qualities of different types of wood, never burn pellets of any kind and be patient! Cooking is an added joy too- plenty of opportunities to practise...cast iron stove ware is the best.We carry sufficient fuel in one of our large on deck lazarettes to go for approx a week to 10 days which, to date, has been sufficient for our needs here in SW England.

I had no idea you could burn coal in it too? That would really help with fuel storage too 👌🏻 We have a box of night briquettes, amazing how long they last for!

They are great, however, they burn more wood than you could ever imagine! To store enough fuel for a week's cruising you would have to tow a mini barge behind you. I used to mix wood and coal briquettes which last longer give more heat and take up less space! Tip two invest in their fan to circulate the heat better. Tip three, make sure you orientate the wood so the ends do not face the glass as the gases and tar is sprayed onto it making it black out quite quickly. Last tip always clean the glass with damp newspaper it works a treat.

Ha ha, appreciate the heads up, will be sure to implement your suggestions. Well, maybe with the exception of towing a barge. 😬

@@CadohaAdventures oh just one important lesson I learned, they get very hot! My daughter thought it would be great to put a tealight candle on the top. It was unlit and the wax melted releasing it's perfumed scent, it was very pleasant until the wax reached its ignition temp and burst into flame. It's almost burned the boat down and the flame was a good 8 inches high. In her panic she knocked the foil cup off the stove onto the cabin floor where it continued to burn. Luck I was there and grabbed an extinguisher. Sorry, hope I have not scared you but please be aware and never put anything other than a watched cook pot or kettle on the top.

I really don't know why anyone living in a northern latitudes climate would want one of these when you could have my eberspacher ( other makes available 😂😂 ) screaming it's head off as the fan assembly bearings start to fail on cold start up followed by that calming whooshing noise all night long. Whilst all this is going on you can think about how to save to pay for the routine parts that will break and be a PIA as you up skill, yet again, to learnt how to fix said device!! 😉. TIP......buy a stove top fan, they are great and work really well at throwing the rising hot air across the room, they run almost silent too. Great job and look forward to the installation

Nice one. Back in the day I helped to install something similar but bigger into the crew quarters of a grab dredger. We also fitted an external flue extension pipe topsides to improve the draw and to help us to fine-tune the heat output. Your stove has the potential to throw out an immense amount of heat on a 38-footer but experimentation and tweaks will result in a pleasing ambient temperature.
@CadohaAdventures

So far it seems like just about the right size for our boat when it's freezing temperatures outside, nice and snug. Although the heat doesn't travel far out of the saloon.
@wills681
@wills681 Жыл бұрын
@@CadohaAdventures The size looks good to me. I don't know the model you have but my previous home was also heated by a wood burner with a back boiler for central heating and the output was insane. Woodburners have downsides (dusty and one more thing to clean) but on the whole they can be efficient and, well, good fun too; you'll love it. As will Hank, probably, when he overcomes his suspicion. On the dredger installation we fitted a mix of ceramic tiles and stainless steel to give a nice blend of aesthetics and practicality.

Hi, that's a steel not cast iron stove so your only curing / burning off paint. You should have no trouble but steel is less stable than iron so be sensible about differential heat. Should last well but will rust more than iron.... Cheers Warren

Neat little stove Dom, looks great. I have a charcoal stove but it would be nice to see the flame as, let’s face it, that’s part of the draw, forgive the pun…. Look forward to the install video. Oh and mulled wine is great sat on the stove on a trivet so it doesn’t boil, always ready and smells great. You may find charcoal works well, the lump wood type not the briquettes. Charcoal burns very clean so no horrid spot on deck or rig. Maybe the smokeless fuel logs will be as good but may be expensive. Cheers. Andy UK
@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures Жыл бұрын
I do love the idea of mulled wine on the stove top now, come to think of it! I'm not sure if burning charcoal is 'suggested' for the stove, but it is essentially just partially burned wood, no?
@AndyUK-Corrival
@AndyUK-Corrival Жыл бұрын
@@CadohaAdventures Yes indeed. In fact I just downed a glass or two of mulled cider…. Hic. Charcoal is like dehydrated wood , not partially burnt as such. It is wood cooked for days in a kiln and produces a lot of heat when used on a barbecue or in a charcoal burner. In my case the advantage is a burner with a flue of only 1” so it is much less of a hole to cut. There are other disadvantages but everything has its + and -.

Hey there. I don't think we'd ever have a free lit whilst we're underway, if we needed heat then we'd just fire up the diesel heat for that. I just think a live fire when you're sailing would be far too dangerous, personally.
