I cannot thank you enough. I live in Tucson AZ and my local Culligan could not tell me how to change my filters with my RO button vs a RO faucet, they wanted to charge me $165 trip charge to install them. I called you from Tucson and you walked me through the process and now I am good to go! Thanks a bunch

I just did all my filters following your video. Your instructions were very clear and much appreciated. I am especially thankful for your stressing the need to turn the filters fully past the detente when tightening. Being ham fisted I am always reluctant to apply force when unfamiliar with the feel. Your video gave me the confidence to push through the resistance. Thanks.

Probably should mention that when filters are installed dry (without pre-flushing), it will take quite a while for water to start dripping from the faucet when you go to flush the system, especially if you have the Total Defense (T.D.) cartridge installed. (That drip-drip-drip from the R.O. module has to fill both the T.D. and post-carbon filters before it makes its way out the faucet when the tank valve is closed (or with an empty tank)) It's also probably a good idea, after 4- 6 hours of flushing with the water coming through the R.O., to then open the tank valve and allow it to empty out, further flushing the system. (With the tank then empty, that would be a good time to test the air pressure on the bladder in the water tank with a low-pressure tire tester.)

Removing the Post Carbon Filter - I have apologized for not including that in the video, it was an oversight. Thank you for your grace. The method to replace it is the same as every John Guest fitting. You push the water line into the filter, you hold the plastic keeper with fingernails, or a spread needle-nose pliers and rotate the filter as you pull it off the line. if you cannot remove it you are not pressing the plastic insert far enough. "How often should I replace my filters?" here was my answer: The most common practice to prevent bacteria starting to grow in your carbons on non-chlorinated water, or if you are on municipal chlorinated water to prevent that getting to your R.O. membrane and damaging that, is to do a yearly change of your filters! NOTE: the R.O. membrane does NOT have to be replaced until it has high TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) over 50PPM TDS on city systems, higher if you are rural; or if you have low production after putting in new filters. I have been seeing more chemical impurities so I highly recommend getting a Total Defense filter for your system to remove those and PFAS and PFOS and Pharmaceutical. You will have high impurties in the tank. for the next 3 nights before your go to bed, open the drinking water tap and completely drain the tank till the tap is very slow trickle then close the tap. your water will be getting more pure every day. and you will normal level RO level of TDS after the 3rd tank empty and refill.

How does the system know when to stop? I mean if the tap is off and the tank is full, what mechanism is there to stop it from keeping pushing that water which i guess will be coming non-stop through the drain hose in the RO filter?
@CulliganKev
@CulliganKev 2 жыл бұрын
How do you know it is not shutting off? It will have flow to drain as long as it is filling the tank. And sometimes you might have a long time to fill tank if your Source pressure is not high. My experience has been that virtually NOTHING is produced if your source water is 42PSI or below, in which case you will run to drain until you get higher pressure. I do not know what your diagnosis is if it is low source pressure, consider adding an RO Booster pump Culligan part# 01009334. if you are sure it is not. and you shut off the tank and do not use any water from RO and in the morning you still have drain water then you need a culligan service tech to diagnose it but you may need the shutoff piston. Culligan Part# P1001472 Shutoff Piston Assy. This is what shuts off the drain water when the tank pressure is within 2-4psi of the source water. These usually do not cause trouble, but they can become fouled with Calcium or other TDS as they run in source, impure water.
@RPDBY
@RPDBY 2 жыл бұрын
@@CulliganKev thank you so much for such detailed answer. I know its not shutting off because i can see the water constantly flowing through the drain tube, which is transparent. I know the tank is full because there is not water flowing into the tank (that tube is also transparent) and the pressure in the tank is exactly the same as the pressure in my water supply (and the tank is heavy as i would expect with a full tank). SO i will check the shut off valve, it may not be doing its job.

We purchased filters from our local culligan dealer and we are only getting dripping water. This happened the first time we changed them and we had to have a technician come out to the tune of $$. I suspect the filters were not flushed when you got them, they were sealed and dry? It can take a while for water to soak and flow through filters. I will tell you 99% of the time when a client has a problem after a filter change, I have always found one filter is not fully turned past the detent to a seated position. This shuts off the water flow. to diagnose your system, while water is turned on, wrap a rag around the first filter (most left when looking at it) and turn it counter clockwise, (front of that filter turns to your left). As you "bump" up to and over the detent, you should get a "phssssst" sound as it moves off of seated position just before it shuts off the internal shut-off for that filter, in the housing. you should get a bit of water in your rag. then rotate the filter back over the detent to a fully seated position, for a woman you cannot turn the filter hard enough to break the system. then repeat to the next filter. do the same to all the filters. You should get a "phssssst" sound for each one. If you did get the sound of water pressure release you never had that filter fully past the detent. If you got a sound/water from each filter your problem is in the Flow Restrictor tube on the RO membrane. review that part of the video and check the flow restrictor tube, it may have had water pressure spit it out to drain. we are located in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Canada, I cannot speak for the USA prices. I can say that for us we get you to bring in a sample of R.O. water to determine if you need the more expensive membrane. if not yearly you would just need the sediment $40, the Carbon $42, and post carbon, $40 that seems a lot cheaper than what your local dealership has charged you possibly they are quoting you with service to change them?
@givemefreedom2359

@@CulliganKev to have them install is an extra $200. They cannot stand talking to me because I don't hesitate to let them know that $200.00 to bend their knees and twist their wrists isn't reasonable in the least. Had my house not already had a Culligan water softener when I moved in, I probably wouldn't have done business with them. So, $85 if I remember correctly for the three filters, sediment, carbon, and torpedo, and $15 to ship them. Another $200 if I ask for installation. I hate greedy corporations with a passion.

The video says to leave the tap on for 4-6 hours to flush the filters. I have a Culligan owners manual and it says something in there to flush for a minimum of 24 hours for the RO membrane? Which is right?
@CulliganKev
@CulliganKev 3 жыл бұрын
Always refer to your owners manual. most people are not replacing the R.O. Membrane so for the Sediment, and Carbon block, and post carbon, 4 - 6 hours are sufficient. if you are doing the R.O. overnight is fine we have found, in morning it has low TDS reading.
@malone6005
@malone6005 2 жыл бұрын
I just replaced my RO membrane and had the same question. The manual states 24 hrs but my local Culligan service tech said to remove the capillary tube, flush for 30 minutes and reinstall or just fill and empty a tank or 2 and it should be good. So the real question becomes, is the preservative in the RO membrane bad for you so it is necessary to flush for 24 hours?
@CulliganKev
@CulliganKev 2 жыл бұрын
@@malone6005 I strongly disagree with the advice you received. if you do not have the capillary tube in the system you are doing NO flushing of the inside of the R.O.!! The water on the inside of the R.O. impurities go right into your go into your tank. Culligan recommends 24hours to be ultra conservative. but the factual answer is when the impurities are gone. when your TDS drops to a 95% removal of your source water TDS .

sorry for delay the red rubber with a longer capillary tube is for the 50 gallon per day membrane. the black one with capillary tube is for the 30 gallon per day. they are not interchangeable. a new membrane comes with the proper stopper and tube. if the rubber plug has no capillary tube (clear small diameter tube) it probably was not installed properly and "Blew out" it will need to be replaced,

When does the drain line stops water ?
@CulliganKev
@CulliganKev 3 жыл бұрын
the drain from the R.O. will only stop when the tank is full. to test it shut off the tank and in most cases within 5 -20 mins the lines will pressure up and shut off the R.O. and the drain line will stop. If yours does not you may have a problem. remember if your source line pressure is below 40psi, you will not produce water and will never shut off. in that case you need the Booster Pump to get about 70psi and it can produce more R.O. water and do it faster, then shut off.

Assuming new filters were put in and the R.O. membrane is new (or at least not plugged) would indicate that you need to increase the pressure to the R.O. if you have a booster pump now it might be defective, if you do not that is what you should get, a booster pump in front of the source supply. The R.O. needs to be over about 40psi to start producing R.O. water. as water gets colder the system produces less, the booster pump will take it up to about 70+PSI, vastly improving production. you local culligan will have booster pumps for your system.

Will you please advise how I can get these filters without going through my local San Diego Culligan Store? I need a new set of the Aqua Cleer Filters, but I had such a horrific experience with the San Diego Culligan services I don't want them anywhere near my home. I bought a turn key home with a brand new Culligan top of the line system. The system (featured in this video) was so new that the water had not been fully hooked up to the system. I called Culligan and requested a Culligan rep come to my home and show me how to use the system. The rep immediately started to hassle me about all kinds of items I needed to purchase, he never even bothered to ask me what system I had. I said I just need someone to educate me on how to use the system. The rep was polite and said he would show me at a scheduled appointment. He came to the appointment and came inside my gated perimeter (without contacting me to let him in). He greeted me, then sat down a sales book without even checking to see what system I had, and began to tell me "items I needed to purchase." I repeatedly had to tell him I just wanted to learn about the system. Over nine times he hassled me to purchase .... He had not even looked at my system. Finally, I had to insist he just see the system I had. He conceded that I did not need anything at that time after looking at the system I had. After he left I called the Culligan Water company to discuss my experience. The rep. was demoralizing, as she defended the rep. She tried to gaslight me into believing the way he acted was okay. I hung up and wrote a review on Yelp. A couple months later, I was running out of culligan salt and asked how I could get more. The same rep I had spoken with the first time quoted me a ridiculous price at an excessive delivery sched. I ended up buying quality salt from Home Depot for 6-7 x less than she quoted me. Now I need to get the above Aqua Cleer Filters or disconnect the Culligan System entirely. Please advise how I can get these filters without going through my local San Diego Culligan Store?

I have a brand new as well as a used take that have the proper PSI. Any suggestions as to why my water supply might be stopping between the Reverse Osmosis filter and the Total Defense filter? Thank you!

Captain Spark is correct, filters are available through any local Culligan Store, we would ship to you to help you, but you would not have shipping in your local store. As to getting look-alike filters from amazon, they are usually fake (knock-offs made in china) , and they might work but the do not go through the numerous levels of quality control and you risk having impurities or ruptures of the R.O. if you choose a discounted filter, buy a TDS tester and test regularly. not all filters are the same just because they fit.

You describe how to measure the rate of flow but you don’t say what the optimal rate of flow is for this system.
@CulliganKev
@CulliganKev Жыл бұрын
There is no answer for what capacity should be, the membrane is rated on the label at 30GPD or 50GPD (Gallons Per Day) so that is the max possible say 30GPD would 30/24hrs= 1.25US Gallons per hour. BUT i mean a big BUT!!! (according to Aquatic Life blog) All flow rates stated on reverse osmosis systems and membranes are assuming a water temperature of 77 degrees F. As the water temperature changes so will the flow rate. For every degree F you lower the temperature you lose about 3% of product flow. for example using Applied Membrane Temperature Correction Factor chart, for 50F water source your would only have 30GPD divided by TCF of 1.711 = 17.53 GPD. Vastly different production. BUT ALSO if your Total Dissolved Solids is higher than 200PPM TDS you decrease the production by about 2% for every increase of 100TDS, so you can have very different production and it is based on your water source. if you have TDS over 500PPM you should have a Reverse Osmosis Booster pump to compensate. that brings up the 3rd factor of production, the source water pressure. most RO membranes will not produce if water pressure is below 40 PSI so farm systems operating 20-40psi virtually never produce water. 30-50 produce RO only 40-50 time of cycle. all farm systems less than 50psi constant pressure need a booster pump.

@@CulliganKev Thanks Kevin, we all appreciate your expertise and transparency. I recently installed post carbon filter and the 3 fixture filters (that are not the RO membrane) (Culligan of Brampton, ON, Canada neglected to send me the RO on my last order, although I did ask to have replacements for all filters). I bought the whole system about three years ago and haven't changed the RO since). Since I changed the other filters my rate of flow has been roughly 10 US gallons/day. I have double checked that all the filters are clicked in firmly, and, here's my question: I am wondering if not changing the RO could be affecting my GPD? I've since specifically ordered the RO and hope it will resolve this.

@@justintensen8475 Sorry I may not have answered this there are two reasons to replace the R.O. membrane. one is that the R.O. membrane starts to "open" and your TDS will increase, if it is above 50PPM of TDS or less than 90% rejection it could be replaced. however if you do not have soft water or other impurities they can plug the membrane and have low production.

what is the capillary tube for, will the system work without it?
@CulliganKev
@CulliganKev 2 жыл бұрын
Hello RPDBY, the system will NOT work without the capillary tube. It produces the correct amount of back pressure to force water through the Reverse Osmosis membrane, while providing enough flow across the membrane to clear the impurities and prevent early fouling of the RO Membrane. You need to match the correct capillary tube with the correct RO Membrane. the red one is for the 50 gallon per day membrane and the black one is for the 30 gallon per day membrane. You can buy a 50gallon per day RO Membrane even if you have a 30 gallon per day now. but as said above the correct capillary tube (comes with a new membrane) has to be matched to the RO membrane.
@RPDBY
@RPDBY 2 жыл бұрын
@@CulliganKev thank you, i think i understand now. Without the capillary tube most or all of the water will go through the drain hole in the filter and not through the filter, and if the the capillary tube is too tight too much water will be pushed through the filter fouling it too quickly. Thank you!

Why does Culligan charge $100 labor? Doesn't seem like rocket science and the guy was here for less than 10 minutes. They charged me $87 for filters, 4.99 for "transportation fee for grand total of $198. Wish I would have seen this video...next year

You are not in our service area, but I can answer that for your local dealer. We made this video to help our clients save some money in these trying times. And with the help of this video, you are able to do it yourself next year. But in regards to why your local Culligan charges you what seems like a lot of money, this will explain more about that. Your visit starts in the shop, someone pulls your filters, at our store we actually pre-flush your filters, this takes time and then the time to drive the service truck to your home. That truck has cost to buy and eventually replace, some of the charge is allocated from those expenses to provide you with a service. Then the Culligan service tech has to be paid for all his time to prepare your filters and to drive and do your service. if it is our store when we do the filter change we also do a sanitization of your system. So when you consider all the costs you may have been unaware of. Hope you have a great holiday season and drink lots of healthy Culligan water! Thanks for contacting Culligan

How long do i flush new filters - "The video says to leave the tap on for 4-6 hours to flush the filters. I have a Culligan owners manual and it says something in there to flush for a minimum of 24 hours for the RO membrane? Which is right?" Always refer to your owners manual. most people are not replacing the R.O. Membrane so for the Sediment, and Carbon block, and post carbon, 4 - 6 hours are sufficient. if you are doing the R.O. overnight is fine we have found, in morning it has low TDS reading. Culligan recommends 24hours to be ultra conservative. but the factual answer is when the impurities are gone. when your TDS drops to a 95% removal of your source water TDS . I strongly disagree with the advice people received from other dealers about flushing with capillary tube removed. if you do not have the capillary tube in the system you are doing NO flushing of the inside of the R.O.!! The water on the inside of the R.O. impurities go right into your go into your tank.

Hi, this is helpful. So if I understand it correctly, "flushing the system" means leaving the tap on and letting the water drip into your sink for a minimum of 24 hours if I changed the RO membrane. When I had a H-83 system, it used to mean letting the tank fill up and then emptying the tank 2-3 times. So it seems like flushing the system is different now by simply leaving the tap on. Am I understanding this correctly?
@CulliganKev
@CulliganKev Жыл бұрын
@@msoftball22 the assuption was that in draining the tank 2-3 times the system had at least 24 hours to soak and flush. preferred is to let the tap run out for overnight. and then fill the tank and the following night empty tank that flushed the system and the tank.

This is a surprising Comment? The best solution is to buy a TDS meter and only flush until you have about 5% of your Tap water TDS level. If you do not have a TDS meter, you are welcome to do any length of flush time you wish. BUT, if you do not flush the manufacturing chemicals out you will be putting those into your tank and drinking things that may be harmful. My suggestion is purely for your safety. if you buy pre-flushed filters, that is already done for you. and you might put through 4 gallons in 4 hours. it is not the same as your kitchen tap. Have a great day whatever you do! The best solution again is not to put water into your tank until you have low TDS and it is pure water.
