Do you want to learn how to easily change your whole house, cottage or cabin water filter? You know, it can’t be all that difficult and it seems like a waste of your time to try to arrange to have a plumber come out to do it for you! And what about the cost to do such a simple job? I’m going to show you how to change your Whole House Water Filter in 7 Easy Steps.
This DIY video is for the cottage, cabin or homeowner, who wants to change their own water filters to save the hassle and expense of having a plumber do it for them. You’ll learn when you need to replace the filter as well as what you need to do to prepare and how to do the work yourself. And I’ll share all of my tips and tricks along the way to make the job easier for you. This is what you’ll need before you start:
Replacement filter - if you’re not sure, this KZfaq video of mine will help • Which MICRON sediment ...
Correct size Filter housing Wrench or Universal Wrench
Bucket to catch the water, and some clean rags.
Plumber’s silicone grease. waterestore.ca...
You would replace a whole house water filter cartridge whenever the water flow slows down in your home, cottage or cabin or after one year of use, whichever happens first. You don't want bacteria growing inside that filter! Prepare a bucket with clean soapy water ahead of time because once you open the filter housing you won't have access to water until you're finished.
1) Turn your water supply off. You probably have a shutoff on the supply line located before the filter. If not, go to the hydro panel and turn the pump off.
2) Release any water pressure in the water lines before you unscrew the water filter housing. You need to turn a faucet on inside the house to release the pressure and let the water run until it stops or at least slows to a trickle. Then shut off the water after the filter housing to keep the water from the house from draining back through the open filter housing. If the filter housing is stuck, check out this video • BEST 5 WAYS to OPEN an...
3) Place a bucket under the filter housing. Unscrew the housing and take it off being careful to minimize spilling the water from inside the housing.
4) Remove the old filter and clean the inside of the housing with soapy water and towels to remove any built-up debris. Check to make sure that there are no old rubber gaskets inside the filter housing.
5) Put some clear plumbers silicone grease on the O-ring, which will help preserve the O-ring, make it seal better and make it easier to remove the next time. Unwrap and slide the new filter into the housing and screw it back in place, slightly more than hand tight, about 1/8 to ¼ turn.
6) Turn the faucet off that you had running to release pressure. Turn the main water supply back on, partially. Check for leaks around the cartridge housing, if there are no leaks, open main water supply fully.
7) Flush the new filter with at least 3 or 4 gallons of water or until the water flowing after the filter is clear.

So I have a blue filter thingy with the wrench on it, but it’s big… probly at least 20”. So how do I know what filter cartridge/insert goes in it? My furnace quit workin and the guys are sayin it’s low water pressure. 🤷‍♀️ Very frustrating… I’ve been without heat and/or hot water since beginning of April .

This is a very well done video. I need to change my filter. The plumber said it would cost $300.00 ! He even said the price was ridiculous and to do the change myself. Having no mechanical skills, I was about to pay the $300. Your careful step-by-step approach has given me the courage to try. Thank you so much.

Thank you soooo much🤗 I’m a single woman who was catching hell trying to replace my filter but it was so tight I couldn’t loosen it. Thanks to your video, I found out why it was hard to loosen (bc I didn’t drain the sink water or press that red button first to release the pressure). I really was about to hire someone thinking I would never be able to do it myself. I’m very grateful you took the time to share your knowledge🤗😆

Great video. Really came in handy. One note: Gary says "lefty loosey, righty tighty" but he turns the wrench to the RIGHT to LOOSEN it. Most filter housings work this way: tighten when turned to the left and loosen when turned to the right. Took me a little while to figure out I was turning it the wrong direction.

Thanks Gary. I have a couple of smaller Rainfresh filters in-line but they work great. I've found that unless I open the outflow shut off valve (& a tap) before slowly opening the inflow valve that the resulting air pressure build up seems to cause leaks to open up at the top of the cartridge housing (air wants to escape somewhere). Also I appreciate your advice to apply plumbers silicone grease to the "o" rings (will buy some today) and to use the wrench to tighten the housing. To date I've only hand tightened it as was recommended but have had issues with leaks more often than not. Thanks for a great video.

Yes, I would definitely use the grease waterestore.ca/products/plumbers-secret-clear-silicone-grease-food-grade-113-gram and if it leaks it isn't tight enough so use the wrench to tighten a little more.

Thanks Gary. Wish we watched your video before tackling it. We didn't realize there was a pressure button or that we could have opened up a cold water facet in the house to release pressure! Finally got it off, but another problem arose with the O-Ring. It was stretched out a bit, but we thought we could just screw it back on with it anyway. BIG MISTAKE! It leaked like a sieve and we had a terrible time trying to get it back off even without pressure. USE ONLY A FITTING O-RING in good condition! Our 5 minute project ended up being 1.5 hours!

Hi. Just changed my whole house water filter thanks to your help. Tyvm. Now I have two questions. Water was tested and it’s fine but we seem to be getting air bubbles that disappear after they rise to the top. Installers have idea why but do you have any thoughts on this? Air bubbles are super small and fine. We have the full setup with two tanks that remove both iron and bacteria and smells like sulfur etc.. also have the ultraviolet light. It’s got a pantair filter with shutoffs before and after the filter. Also has pressure relief red button. Original filter did see the winding but the replacements have a blue paper covering that doesn’t come off. Is this new for pantair?
@GarytheWaterGuy
@GarytheWaterGuy Жыл бұрын
Glad the video helped. The air bubble are coming from the iron and sulphur filter which injects air intio the water to oxidize out the iron and sulphur. Not sure what you mean by the replacement filter having a blue paper covering.

You make it look so easy. I thought the was going to be a real scenario situation. In the real world your going to have the filter housing full of water splashing all over the place and your probably going to get wet. So I would recommend to put a empty 5 gallon bucket under the housing and have a lot of rags. If your on a well I would recommend turning off the well pump if you don't have a ball valve on the side going to your pressure tank.

How do i know which shutoff is "upstream" and which shutoff is "downstream"? My filter is in the middle of a loop off of the main water pipe into the house. Also, i am assuming that the "open" position is when the handle is in line with the pipe. Is that correct?

This is similar to the GE Filter I just removed. It had the Oring on top like that and constantly leaked even when it was tight. I even tried Teflon around the threads and it still leaked even after oring replacement. You need to hold that pipe tight or you'll snap it trying to get this filter housing tight. If your filetrs are clogged you will have a loss of pressure. The pressure switch controls the pressure but there is a maximum and a minimum so ther is always fluctuation between upper and lower of about 20 psi.

5:08 : The newly inserted white cartridge can be seen wobbling left and right, and easily touching the rim of the blue housing. On my system, this happens even if the white cartridge has properly snapped into the bottom of the blue housing. When the blue part is eventually screwed in into the black "lid", how do you ensure that the white cartridge is centered and standing vertically up inside the blue part? If it is not, does this cause issues? Like, how will the water flow correctly into the filter cartridge, if the cartridge is sitting inside the blue part at an angle or even touching the blue rim? Once the blue part is screwed into the top black part, there is no way to visually check for this. I replaced my cartridge by following these and other similar instructions, but unsure about what to do about this "wobbling" of the white cartridge. It doesn't seem possible to fix it in a vertical position. Do people just ignore this issue? [Very nice video, by the way, thank you.]

To have a valve before and after the filter would be nice for various reasons but not needed. Unless you inside faucets are leaking really bad the water will not flow back out. Its the same theory as putting a straw in a glass of water then putting your finger on the top of the straw. The water stays in the straw. So does the water stay in the pipes.

@justme-dm7sb
@justme-dm7sb 3 ай бұрын
@@GarytheWaterGuy It can't be a plumbing vent issue because we are talking about water INTO the house. My vent pipes only connect to my drain system. In fact if I had vents on my inlet water it would be overflowing on the roof, because that system is pressurized. About 30-60 psi range. If I turn the water off before the filter, the pressure is all on that valve. But the straw effect still applies to the rest of the water system since the only open "faucet" would now be the outlet side from the filter. It is possible that the T valve above the filter closes both into and out of the filter. But it is definately not about vents.
