Creators today are so hooked on the word "relatable" instead of focusing on making characters/words/stories "compelling". As a 19 year old black man I got nothing in commonly with a 30 year old white cowboy (Arthur Morgan), yet I love him as a character because he is compelling. I don't watch/read or play entertainment media to see my life mirrored back at me. It's escapism. I get to be someone else, or be a part of someone else's journey, exist in a different world similar to my own but with different unique things going on. None that requires relatability as a foundation.

Well said. The problem we have are the many many frustrated losers in this world I think. Those people cannot endure it anymore to *NOT* celebrate _"how much they are losers"_ and they want everything kinda to be about them. So they make characters _"relatable"_ instead of compelling. Trying to lower the bar about what it needs to be _"impressive"_ which is not the truth in the end. In LotR we had the Hobbits for example. Who are the most normals of the normies. They live like countryside hippies to some degree. And look even *_"one of them could carry the Ring and safe the world"._* Which is not true. Frodo could not do it because he was so amazingly unremarkable and free of greed, or desires or anything. He could do it cause there was others, *impressive* and powerful people aiding him, who either spend their lifetime training the sh°t out of themself ( Legolas, Aragorn ) or were simply born in real power & might or fated for it ( Galadriel & Gandalf ). Frodo is relatable. But he alone would not have been the answer. Everything is needed. *WINNERS* are needed to win. ;-) People of amazing skills & mind. Not whiny, frail autonormal normies who sink into suicidal depression at the prospect of their online connection being cut at any moment. ^_^

I used to wonder, "Why not just create an new franchise with original characters who have the characteristics it's now fashionable to appreciate?" But then I realized that that's not the point. The point is to subvert existing franchises for propagandistic purposes and replace the traditional audiences for them with a new set of "right-thinking" adherents. All forms of entertainment can be used to promote a political agenda in this way. If they are actually entertaining, and the propaganda is subtle, it's an effective way to influence audiences' attitudes and opinions. Gradualism works. But the current woke offerings are ham-fisted and inauthentic, very much like theatre in the Stalinist and Maoist regimes, so they end up losing the old audience without really engaging the interest and imagination of a new one. People do recognize bad art, if only subconsciously, so the good news is that this era can't last very long. All but a few will just tune it out until no one sees the point in making it anymore.

Lyshanna Lynch thinks she's reinventing the wheel for women in Bond when strong women have been in the Bond franchise for decades. Nomi will likely be forgettable and too on the nose. Not to mention Bond seems to be getting cucked in several scenes in his own movie. Like when he's riding behind her on a motorcycle (so long the days where Bond and Wai Lin fought to get control of a motorcycle) and her being magically able to operate an aerial vehicle she admits to having no experience flying whilst Bond sits in the back like a good boy.

Race and gender aside, I think it's a very dangerous precedent they're setting now whereby modern culture takes a character someone created and decides to change this element or that. We're all used to movie adaptations where they take liberties, like Sherlock Holmes, but it is "sheer fucking hubris" to think that the character Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created was just a partially completed template for you to modify as you see fit. Modern producers and audiences seem to think these classics are choose your own adventure books, where you can modify it to suit yourself. No, the creator didn't create 50% of a character, they created 100%, and if that doesn't fit with someone in 2021 then they are free to find something else that does, or create their own original work. It's becoming a real problem, with folk genuinely thinking it's ok to say "why can't James Bond be black etc."

I actually like Jodie as the Doctor, but the show itself has never really been supremely sexist- The Doctor gives up the Presidency to Flavia ,was an equal to Ramona and a rival to the Rani. It's about writing good STORIES that is the key, but the woke generation doesn't like good stories, it seems. By all means, people write a female sci-fi character who goes around time and space. Even more importantly, minorities don't often/always flock to a show/series JUST because it's "minority". A lot of comic books try to go all LBGTQUIA+ but they often fail because most LBGTQUIA+ are not interested in comics. Anyone really think most minority ppl are really interested in period dramas? But take a major successful property that ppl ALREADY access - like Harry Potter - and THEN make "changes"'; it will still have success because most ppl will just swallow the changes than give it up JUST because - for example - Hermanie role is race changed, or the creator is labeled "transphobic"

That's not the point though. And that's the thing people who praise this bs don't get. I'm not proud, validated or interested when they force a black character into a non-black role, especially in a story where black people wouldn't have existed. A character having the same skin as me isn't enough to make me like or care for them. If they stand out oddly, I'd spend my time trying to figure out how they exist where they do because having a dark skin person in a story set on a planet with little sunlight will make me wonder what is making their skin dark? Why are they not dead? Why are they not sickly? Putting a race of ginger folk on a planet with a lot of sunlight will make me ask the same things. I've always found it weird people complained of no black folks being in stuff like Lord of the Rings because it's like complaining no black folks are in the Journey to the West. When they do this race swap thing it feels insulting more than anything else.

I can only say, its painful to watch new shows. Fact is, I cancelled Netflix because of this, and what happened was they tried to lure me with the junk that made me cancel in the first place. The idea of dismissing our treasures for politics is a sad byproduct of communist take overs. I love Karate, and the origins are completely relevant... Karate originated in the island of Okinawa. They had very close ties with China... But then China was overtaken by their current Communist regime, martial arts schools were heavily oppressed, some of the masters were killed, some went into hiding others left,.. To Okinawa. Likewise, I find Russian Futurism fascinating. Music that emulates all the excitement of the first impressions of the industrial revolution. It has hefty dissonance, complex arrangements and is often very intense. When Stalin rose to power, that music was banned. Much of it was destroyed, many composers were murdered and those left had to accept the regimes requirements. All music was dumbed down as much as possible (just like those woke garbage series, which could hardly be any stupider), and like China, and Nazi Germany, forced to become mere propaganda. As usual, Marxism enshrined mediocrity in a no holds barred race to the bottom. Luckily, Ive found a few actors and creators have turned their back,to this propaganda machine. They make low budget shorts (which if you think about it, gives them access to better equipment than was available to Twilight Zone, so it should be more than enough) And at least for the moment, this kind of material can be seen here and there Thank you for your excellent work! But by the time they would have been building up to it, the latest lunatics to run the BBC decided this plan wasn’t “woke” enough, so, screw the fans, screw 30 years of continuity.

I've been reminded once again lately why I love Star Trek so much, and why I hate so much what they've done to it. This applies to so many stories, characters, even individual themes of movies that influenced my life. They're just not accepted anymore. In fact, it's all being actively looked down on, if not outright demonized by modern media.

From what I can tell, whoever writes these shows and movies feel like high school fanfic writers, usually girls, who have very specific tastes and writes fanfics that most people wouldn't care for and now they get hired into positions of power and they are abusing it to serve their fetish.

The Doctor is one where I half agreed with you. If it had not been used to create constant political plotlines, but instead been used as a twist around getting past the original limitation on regenerations, a consequence of going beyond the limit I thought it would have worked. In fact, the first female doctor could have had a running plotline of the Doctor adapting to a female body. That's why the female Doctor makes me so mad. It could have been a fun and creative choice to jump a limitation the character has had for decades (the regeneration limit) but instead was just a lazy wokefest.

I mean hell. They made Achilles and Zeus to be black in the recent Troy BBC show. Ah, but they are fictitious you may say. Well, you know the next step is a Alexander The Great film with a black actor playing the role. What excuse will there be then? Me and my people (Greek Macedonian) will be called racists and told to shut up when this happens and we cry out against this. The West is finished.

They had the perfect characters for an female led series in Doctor who universe. Me (the viking), Clara and the Doctors daughter (more recent one). They have a Tardis in shape of diner. That would have worked. How well it did would be up to show runner, actors, etc. They could have done crossovers. All canon. It could have been good. Oh well.

the Paternoster gang (two lesbians ,one of which is an alien, plus a Sontaran butler) was pretty cool. River Song was great, Clara was hot and great, the secret Caribbean version of the First Doctor was great. There could be a storyline where genetic males are frozen in a forcefield with only the Sontaran butler and the Daleks left unaffected because they are sexless creatures. but alas, creativity is lost.

We had these politicised films here where I live, in the 70'ties, and in general called 70'ties films, political garbage, just as bad and embarrassing today as then decades ago, our 70'ties films was 'woke' as woke films are political correct today, and will be embarrassing stupid garbage today as they will be in decades into the future, unfortunately this wokeness will destroy a whole industry forever, there is no return to quality workmanship again, but at least, I save a bunch of money, so it is not all bad

You forgot Bill and Ted. In the last film 30 years ago, they had sons Little Bill and Little Ted. But they retconned them to have always been girls. On top of that, if you looked at the future, there was no white men on the high earth council. All women and one black man. And, instead of Bill and Ted being the chosen two to save the earth as established in the first two films, it turns out it was their daughters. Despite the fact we saw holograms of them in the future clearly showing Bill and Ted as being the ones who were the chosen two, not their daughters. It clearly is a sin now to be a white man who is straight.

Many of the old Doctors gave their previous selves a put down. Colin Baker's opening lines put down Davison, Troughton famously puts down Pertwee in his return appearances and even on a Children in Need special. One could put down Whitaker's one line as yet another example of this.

@@mbogucki1 Would Pilate not kill a black who rambled in Hebrew? The Romans were seriously militant and brutal. I'm guessing Jesus looked more like Caesar or Nero than Hebrewood tells you. Egypt had Europeans types ruling. Ancient Greece even thought the Hebrews were racially similar. The Arabs thought Jesus was white.... Islam had a white Jesus. Please Hebrewood.... Make a film depicting Mohammad as black. There might be a final Jihad. When you have an old coin with a ruler in good shape.... he's obviously coined himself as white. I'm guessing he was white. When Caligula got upset at the tribe saying they were against nature and Rome.... He built a statue of himself in their temple while Herod laughed. All of north Africa was once white. Rhodesia and South Africa were great for a reason. The Talmud claims Jesus was a Roman. Who hated Rome most?
