Hi I had an n320 big cam and I used to set my injectors with a stick gauge at 224 to 226 thousands of an inch with a little rod in the gauge clamped to rocker box and pull the injector to the stop with my spanner on the adjuster locking nut it did used to go well when they were set together with the valves mine was popping thru the exaust and I got 3replacement heads from Cummins and it fixed it good and proper regs howie in the uk👍

Hey Frank. If you can, take it all apart, hot tank it, rebuild it. Do it once and do it right, she'll last you forever. Been burned in the past just doing enough to make it work. Spend the money once and cruz for many many miles! Just my thoughts. Cheers

That bearing didn't look horrible, but since it had copper showing, they definitely should be replaced. If you're going to do rods, then do mains too. If you can't hang your finger nail on the scoring, you can usually just polish the crank shaft and it'll be fine. It appears that the turbo is pushing oil past the seal into the intake and needs repair. Also, if the valve lash was really tight, I would roll the push tubes and check them for straightness. Probably should make sure that the injector cups aren't cracked since at least one of them was super tight. I haven't priced parts in a long time, but I don't think it'll be terribly expensive. Good luck Mr. Frank.

Yeah I wonder about the injector cups too, some good advice! Thanks

Good luck, hope it turns out well. LPF liners wasn't til 86, longer head bolts/deeper thread depth was 78. Knowing what you have is nice but usually gets expensive.

Polish and new bearings. If there's a whole lot of wear on the mains I'd pull it down and go through it... The trouble will probably be getting parts.

Myself I would have tried firing it up after you ran the overhead, getting parts for old Cummins is getting tough or it is here in Western Canada where I live. You could go a full rebuild and have an engine that will last the life time of the truck, anyway you slice it money will be spent.

Hopefully it won’t be too expensive! Seems like a good idea though, to go through this motor and then put it in the truck, so you can keep running it for now.

Having run 855 Cummins from 50/50 years back. If you can fell the grove on the crank then you will need at least to run it through a machine shop. My vote would be to complete rebuild then you know what you have. Since you have time to do the rebuild then you should be able to find good parts at a reasonable price

It's hard for me to give you advice when I don't hear it run and I don't see what's coming out, if anything of the exhaust system. Frankly, I was hoping that after you set the overhead and injectors that you would have fired it up to see how it ran. Now that you have the oil pan off, you may as well roll since you are in there.
@marylinbradford8603
@marylinbradford8603 Жыл бұрын
Good thing you do check everything.the Bearings are shot the copper is showing on the bearings. I would turn the crank .10 under to make sure everything is fine then you will have that bottom end good for 300,000 miles plus also get the oil pressure back. I guarantee the oil pressure is low by the bearings. The whole motor should be done by somebody you trust. You have a solid block and other parts no sense to cheat it and patch it up but it depends on money and I know how that is good luck

Yeah frank if your gonna put another engine in ol red, it's gonna cost a good bit but if it's possible your better off to go all the way rebuilding an then ol red will be good for years to come, then you won't have to worry about anything, an yeah it's gonna cost a good bit but red will be ready to roll, or maybe throw rods an mains in her an roll with it, but getting them might be troublesome,either way money is gonna be a part of it, if you rebuild her then red will last man6 many years to come, thanks for sharing

Frank, I think you would be better served to rebuild that motor! Those valves in question are most likely all carboned-up, and the cylinders most likely are too!! With that said, you will have a totally fresh engine, all leaks fixed, that will give you peace of mind!! Great video Frank!! Jeff has been here to visit Loren and Me several times now!! If you and your Wife ever get the idea to come up here, We sure would show you Folks a good time, and you’ll see some Beautiful Country!! Well, Take care for now, and keep me posted on your motor progress, Vic!!
