Over 2 million miles running an n14 celect plus. My opinion that's the best engine on the road except for injector problems
@davidsignor79312 ай бұрын
The big cam 3 was a great engine but the power of the N14 was unbeatable I have driven and overhauled all of them. Worked at a KW dealership I can still count on 1 hand how many N14s that I have overhauled one that I did was for a regular customer it had 2.3 million miles on it. Cats always have exhaust manifold problems and head gasket issues even when they came out the overhead cam engine they never did anything to improve headgasket issues or exhaust manifold issues. The original 3406E had so many oil leaks they actually had us cleaning things off and putting epoxy on to stop the leaks, then we were grinding oil relief passages in the idler gear hub and several headgasket changes just for oil leaks. The N14 had plenty of injector issues and some oil leak issues with the front cover/ accessory drive bushing spinning and the oil pan gasket

I've had both. The Cummins revs higher, is simpler and cheaper to fix, the Cat has a better torque rise, great sound and at 893ci, bigger. The supercharged Cummins was rated at 275 hp or 300 hp and it was nicknamed the Iron Lung.

That certainly was the theme back in that era of the Cummins vs the Cat with rebuild costs and same applies now if working on those now older engines from what I understand. However all that seems to have changed with the newer Cummins when it comes to insane prices for a rebuild and very poor reliability due to design issues but more so the pollution system causing the early demise of the engine as per heads cracking and so on. Cat started the down hill route reliability and cost wise with the ACERT but then really went to crap with the DPF system. The main take away is that both Cummins and Cat HAD good engines and then the government stuck their nose up the tailpipe and ruined them all. As of yet here in western Canada there are shops and supplier backup that will lighten the weight of the Cummins powered truck but that ends any warranty and I am told dealers will not take them in on trade, no doubt the clock is ticking on this all coming to an end up here as well like the big GOV hammer that hit you to the south. With our weather and remote locations trucks have to keep running 24/7 all winter when there is no access to electricity to plug in and that is a major killer to the DPF system from what I hear and all the derate crap that ensues.

You forgot about some of the best Cummins engines, but since you are a little bit young I will let that go. The small cam NTA 420 was a powerhouse for sure. Also the KTA 450, 525, and 600 where very good and powerful engines. They were 1155 ci. engines. I agree with you on the cost of ownership. Cummins is a very affordable engine.

I'm not exactly an n14 fan simply because I've seen multiple of them yeet rods for no apparent reason. That being said, they're unbelievably easy to work on and I'd probably put one of them or a series 60 in my 359 whenever I'm ready to upgrade to an electronic engine. My small cam spun the crank gear so idk if im gonna fix it, buy a big cam, or just go ahead and get an electronic engine for it.

The 855 sounds better out the exhaust pipe, the 3406B engine noise sounds better, if that makes sense. What about overhaul intervals? I was always of the impression that the Cat lasted a little longer before rebuild. I agree with all your thoughts. The Cat probably is a couple hundred pounds heavier too - more if it had a brake saver to make up for the weak jakes. Both are legendary engines and you can’t really lose with either.
@ColtWR Жыл бұрын
I'm with you about the sounds 🤣
@pugetlexus Жыл бұрын
cats did last longer but that was often because they were o/o rigs, like the gold macks that had forever engines cats were heavier yes. and your all givin it away. there is no diesel that sounds better than a cat 1693 out the stack. nothing. nothing more fun to drive either. a 1693 into the truck stop in an old pete cab over turns heads. a cold start 1693 in the truck stop in the a. m. could be hear all over the lot. this was in the days when 200 parking spots was a huge truck stop. that 1693 in the corner in an old kw belonged to a grain hauler or a bull whack and he leave it there for the weekend, and fire that mother on monday, hell the whole place stopped to listen . beautiful.

@@pugetlexus what were the Mack engines that lasted long? Was it most of them, or a specific model? The E6 or the E9? I notice they seemed to have better filtration than the Cats or Cummins, but my experience is limited to 2 late-80’s R-600’s.

@@Xkekeskfndsmw im not able to recall the engines that mack made , as i seldom had opportunity to " run with the big dog". one major reason macks were so popular on the east coast was due to the trucks holding together and running longer than others. but i cant recall engine models

Good knowledge. I love the 855 motors. We have a 280 in a 850 versatile and a 250 in a 800 versatile as well as a big cam 365 in a 1985 freightliner. They pull well, they are easy and cheap to work on , and the are incredibly reliable. We have a 91 Pete with a b model cat and though it is quieter and smoother , it's Jake's are horribly weak and it's not nearly as reliable.

I believe the basic design started in the early 30s. Much smaller displacement, 670 something and they just kept adding cubic inches and improvements to it. 70 year run, probably no basic design will come close to that production longevity.

855 block decks crack more. Costing more to out of frame. 349A super jakes were offered for a B and C model. Not to mention with a brake saver (retarder). A super Jakes retarder combo will hold way more back then an 855. B model overhead is easier and faster to run. 855’s also usually need a bearing roll around 250k depending on how how hard it’s used, now a small journal B isn’t much better but the wide journal C would do a million miles before the bottom end needs touched.
