OH.MY.GOODNESS!!!! I made 2 pans of these today. I will admit that whisking each batch of caramel for about 25 minutes each was wicked because of arthritis. But...was worth every swish!! Came out looking exactly like your photos!!! I'm overwhelmed. EDIT..Is very dangerous now because I just learned how INCREDIBLY EASY it is to make shortbread! YIKES!!

Made these yesterday. Delicious! Here’s a couple tips: when making the caramel keep storing or the bottom will burn also I suggest straining the caramel when fully cooked cause mine got a lil lumpy I think because of the milk solids. My shortbread tasted a little bit like pie crust but was great. I used two bars of cheap chocolate and one bar of dairy milk. Also DEFINITELY store on freezer tastes even better but you can in fridge if you want. Thanks for this great recipe.

The name "millionaire's shortbread" appears to have originated in Scotland. The "millionaire" prefix to millionaire's shortbread or millionaires slice implies a level of decadence and wealth to the sweet treat, that it is an upgrade from regular shortbread.

From my research, I think that it is called a ‘millionare’s’ shortbread because of how rich it is!
@UmBungo
@UmBungo 4 жыл бұрын
It’s a traditional Scottish biscuit, and yes, it was named after milionaire’s for its richness AND to kind of elevate it as a luxury saved for special occasions. Scotland was once very poor, especially after the failed Darien Scheme which ultimately led to the Act of the Union (1707) and the birth of what we now know as the UK, and looking at photos of the Glasgow slums that existed right up until WW2 and lesser so until 1960, coupled with how life and the world changed during the industrial revolution and days of the Empire, according to literature and accounts of the times. Sorry, I’m just stoned and Scottish and full of lots of such information. 🤷‍♂️🤣

I made these and had some issues, however the end result was still delicious. I followed the recipe exactly and found my shortbread was too crumbly. I also cooked my caramel 20 minutes, trying for the same color as shown, but at 20 mins the color wasn't as burnished and it was much thicker than the consistency seen in the video, so my caramel layer was much too chewy (and yes, I used Golden Syrup - it's a staple in my Irish hubby's pantry). Next time, because we will baking these again, I'll focus on the consistency shown in the video for the shortbread and caramel vs the exact measurements and/or timing. Also, the shortbread recipe is the closest to Walkers Shortbread I've found, and I've tried a lot. Excellent overall. Thank you for sharing this! It's a new family favorite.

Millionaire shortbread is believed to have acquired its name due to its rich and indulgent nature. The dessert consists of three layers: a buttery shortbread base, a luscious caramel filling, and a generous topping of chocolate. This combination of buttery, sweet, and chocolatey layers creates a luxurious and decadent treat. The name "millionaire" is often associated with wealth and opulence, and the dessert's indulgent ingredients and flavors led to the moniker "millionaire shortbread." It implies that this sweet treat is so rich and delicious that it's fit for millionaires or those seeking a taste of luxury. The exact origins and history of the name are unclear, but millionaire shortbread is a popular and well-loved dessert in various parts of the world, known by different names such as caramel slice or caramel shortbread. Regardless of its name, it remains a beloved treat appreciated for its delightful combination of flavors and textures.

Combine softened butter and sugar in stand mixer on a medium high speed until the sugar is less grainy and mostly dissolved. Add flour and 1/2tsp salt (if using salted butter or 1 tsp salt if using unsalted). Add vanilla optionally. Continue to mix until dough clumps together. Remove from bowl and knead together by hand until a smooth dough is formed.

I tried to make this and the shortbread was really good but the caremel went so hard I couldn't bite into it so make sure not to leave it on the heat for too long

Same! Had to take it off the shortbread so it won't go to waste 😔 I think that without a thermometer, next time I will go by colour or maybe 5 min less...

Same here, it turned so hard and yet even set timer on 20 mins and whisked. It goes in the bin. The shortbread is the only thing that turned out🥲

Made this on Christmas eve as my Christmas treat to myself. The caramel layer is a little harder and chewier than I was expecting, (I'd thought it would be softer. Not runnier, but not quite so hard) but lord, the whole thing tastes amazing.
