Reminds me of a chap I met at the track who had a gorgeous Lotus 11, and being a Lotus fan I was impressed and said "is it an original one?" and he said "well, I think so - you know the problem of course - in 1956 Lotus built 270 of them, but now there's only about 600 left."

Had a teacher who had a Model A Ford he wanted to make a hotrod out of, really all he had that was original was some bits of the frame with the serial number, enough to register it as a Model A. the body was glassfiber and i welded part of the frame myself out of 25mm square tubing.

There is, unfortunately, a common misconception that live / dead track is synonymous to supported/unsupported track. There is no alternate definition of live/dead track to the one which you read out, but the idea of live track being supported and dead track being unsupported has become commonplace and people have come to believe it to be correct despite there being no such engineering definition..

So Finn’s on the Gin and who can blame him? Great to see the dynamic duo back in action. I am surprised there are no Tank Museum dog treats in the shop but I have a feeling that will change soon. Chewy tank commander bear is a real start, hours of fun to be had with that. But the best for me was a pint of Tiger Piddle. Sorry Tiger beer from the Piddle brewery. You really are a gem David and such a great asset to the Tank Museum in these dark times. You and Finn Keep up the good work. 👍

These Curator Talks are just the most fantastic bouts of nerdery. Wonderful work! Just love the whole thing about castellated welding, right down to pulling out an actual copy of the Report into German Welding Techniques on Tank Chassis (or whatever that was) and quoting Dr Welding Von Stuttgart (or whatever that guy’s name was) who says, “Nein, we bodged it”. Absolutely the most comprehensive and airtight armchair expert takedown! 😄

This is quite common in aircraft restoration - there is a WW2 bomber that was recovered from a lake and the museum left one small panel (approx 1 Square foot) of the original aircraft while every other piece of the aircraft was replaced with brand new material. They tell you this during the tour and point to the small panel on the fuselage and it is easy to pick out due to the corrosion pits etc. So the question is then - is the aircraft on display a restoration or a reproduction?
@krautreport202
@krautreport202 4 жыл бұрын
Most of the time it is not even a reproduction as the original factory documentation is missing. Most airworthy WW2 Aircraft and a fair amount of tanks I would really consider attempted reconstructions with some original parts.
@thoughtengine
@thoughtengine 4 жыл бұрын
There was also an Australian sitcom where the protagonists' acquaintance who was always correcting people who called his car a car instead of "The SAAB" was finding parts being stolen from it. The protagonist messes with his head by invoking this trope, saying that someday there will be someone out there driving his car, and he will have a load of parts that he thinks is his car. Impractical as that is.
@viking1236

HMS Victory was largely 'restored' I the Victorian era, not to mention all the repair of the ship during its working / fighting life. What we know as Stonehenge is a reconstruction from the Victorian era. It's a thing to be accepted if we want to see these wonderful artifacts from the past.

On The steam engine part of the conversation , most steam engine now preserved in the uk , dont have their original boilers as these were swapped all the time in their service life, also new parts were added all the time, rebuilding and upgrades were common as they grow older more parts are being replaced in preservation. The most important thing is that they are a true representation of an original loco that is running to day

@@GARDENER42 British boiler manufacturers do exist amd some new builds are getting British boilers. The thing with Tornado and its German built boiler was its an all welded steel boiler and firebox. Traditionally British boilers had copper fireboxes and rivets so this design was more of a german speciality. Im not sure but it may have made it cheaper too which probably wasnt a bad thing with the funding. Its proved itself well in service and i think they ordered/have another one now for the P2 theyre building

Yes please, my father joined REME during WWII when it was first formed and did an electrical engineers degree in Kingston College. He used to tell me how when running through Bushey Park there would be loads of Americans in tents there and would be sometimes be passed by loads of staff cars with an impressive load of stars on them. Eisenhower was in Bushey Park for the planning of Overlord. My father was in Normandy on D-Day + 2 and spent a lot time servicing radio's and stuff on tanks, mainly Shermans.

In the museum world you either do Preservation or Conservation. Preservation is keeping the object in present state without directly interfering with it i.e.painting over damaged parts. Conservation is where you directly interfere with the object to bring it to its original state. It's always a tricky decision whether you Preserve or Conserve.

Oh sweet, the thing I mentioned about replica steam locomotives was picked up on. (not that it was neccesarily my comment that inspired it) A question as old as preservation of anything. To my mind a part produced (or repurposed) for a historical tank for example is not part of a 'new tank' but just as much part of the vehicle, there is not two tanks, but two of the same part of one tank.

The thing with the copy, recreation or how one want's to call it is, it still makes it possible for us to look at something how it would have been when in use. In the example of the video the "warbird" (a WW2 Plane): not a single part may be from the 40's but still it sounds and moves like it did back then. And that is what people watching such an item are interested to see. For a Museum or a collector, the original is more valuable and interesting, but for people to look at, such copies can be very valuable.

This has occurred with some vintage cars, particularly vintage Ferraris, where a car has been so restored that it leaves enough old part for somebody to build another car from those and claim it to be the original. The Museum at Greenwich does not wind Harrison's H4 chronometer or let it run for the same reason, they don't want it to wear out and have to have parts replaced.

Have you ever thought of doing a series on the design line of a tank from when and how a need is recognized and a spec started. How it is changed over time then into mockup stage, the changes that are then made, what testing is done to prove out the specs, what changes are made to the specs and the mockups, What testing is done and how that changes the design and then the final work on manufacturing techniques and how that can change design and specs and production.

I guess for a museum, the important thing is that the guests can learn what the items were like and how they were used at the time. The degree to which every piece is 'original' is less important than whether they're authentically done.
@DrDezaro
@DrDezaro 4 жыл бұрын
I’m amazed about how much emotion you’re investing in this. In the Asset Management world, each coded item should be an Asset in their own right. I think it depends on the specifications (including material specification). The problem is that most remade components would need to be considered replicas as most of the materials from WW2 are no longer manufacturer. So basically, it’s a grey scale of the mass of original parts / (total mass of the vehicle - mass of non-ID “consumable” parts) It only original when 100% is original specification and only a replica when 0% is original specification.

Based on what I've read, I would say in regard to the *Ship of Theseus pardox:* if an item whether a tank, ship, car, or the _Mona Lisa,_ is restored to its original condition using the appropriate materials and techniques, it should be described as _"conservation reproduction"._ Using a label like this says it's essentially the same as the original restored, but because its construction is a newer copy, it's also a reproduction. This differs from repair, which is an issue for car collectors; whether there's automotive putty under the paint to make it _look_ conserved though it's not, versus if metal was added/replaced where damaged.

Can't say with regards to "what is the original" of course, but I believe that creating a replica and protecting the original examples, as was done with the WWI tanks, is the better way to go. Running Tiger 131 to record footage for a film is cool, but keeping 131 out of risk by producing a replica vehicle would be better (and if eh engine sounds different they could always dub over it in post!)

A simple continuous butt joint has no resistant to crack propagation along the weld. The plug and buttress joints aren’t significantly stronger but, they will require multiple hits to peel it open. This would cost more in original manufacture but would be quicker and easier to fix in the field.

EOD day out plus a recovery excursion, no doubt all in MOPP-4 post COVID - what could possibly go wrong! :) I suspect the DVDs will be limited to the UK's Zone 2?

Have you a flail tank for clearing UXO? ( Not really a serious question, unless there is interesting material available on its practicality.)

(10:00) Perhaps you should turn your glass over to keep windswept debris out of it until you're ready for that drink.
