I'm really glad to have come across this video. I shared this with a friend of mine who is having trouble with hot-process soaping, but still chooses it over cold-process simply because she forgets to make it far enough in advance to allow for curing for several weeks. I myself am very new to soaping and appreciate your approach!

You mentioned French milled soap. I LOVE French milled soap. It lasts so much longer than regular HP or CP soap. Even if you put embeds, that will help your soap to last longer also.

I use a water discount in all my batches now. Sometimes I use just enough water to get my lye dissolved and it makes a huge difference. WSP had a chart that compared the different water % in the batches and showed how long it took for the water to evaporate. I also find that adding milk powder, either coconut or goats milk to the batch makes the bars really hard. Thank you for being willing to have a no nonsense approach to this! Can’t wait for more videos.

Hi, I hope this finds you well. How do you add coconut milk? Do you use it as part of your water weight or is it a separate measurement? Thank you for your time.

Star Moon I just add the coconut milk powder or the goat milk powder right to the oils before adding the lye. You can stick blend that and get it all mixed in before you add the lye.

That's true.. if you're using powders it doesn't make too much difference. If it's already liquid or fresh then that's different.

i am making cold and hot process for about 10 yrs now, in cold process must be cure for a month and a weeks or more, the more you cure the cold process the more the soap is not harmful to your skin, i have used a cold process for just 3 wks old and i can still feel the little burning in my skin, unlike the hot process it will only cure for 2wks and it is more soft to the skin.

I am going to make my first batch of Castile soap soon. I have heard so many different things about curing time. Some people say, “ Oh, I cure my Castile soap 6 months to a year.” Others say it is safe to use in 24 hrs but you should wait about 4 weeks. I love your videos . The way you make things so simple and easy through your experience. Some people make soap making sound so complicated, difficult and scary. Honestly I think most people are saying a lot of these things, like scaring you when you don’t need to be, because of liability to them. It scares a lot of people away from making cold process soap. But because of people like you , I have decided it’s not that scary! I mean, you have to be careful with everyday things like you said in your fragrance and essential oils video. Not too much of anything. Following directions. Like bleach, you use it every day when you do your laundry or clean, but you are careful not to get it on your skin or in your eyes! I knew a lady that worked at a laundromat and bleach splashed in her eye and she went to the dr for treatment and had to wear an eye patch for a while. You just have to have common sense and do your research. I love it when you say “ It’s no big deal !! Thanks! 😊

Good luck with your soap. I use my soap all the time. The last batch I made I started using it three days after I made it. It was a small 3 oz bar and it lasted almost 4 weeks. Its now paper thin resting by the sink. However, I've had batches where I used one the next day. My skin was slightly warm from it though but not bad. As the soap cures though, it does get bubblier or creamier. In the case of pure olive oil it will be slimy up until 8 months with little cream. After that its creamier with no slime. But when it concerns soap losing all its water, it takes ALL soaps, no matter the ingredients, a year to lose all water and maybe just a tad longer.

I agree with your advice. Curing is only really to dry the soap. To further this argument, I have actually pH tested (digital lab grade pH probe) my soap 12, 24, and three weeks. They were all the same for four different batches. Hand made soap should be between 9-10 give or take if you don't pH balance them. So, yeah. It is safe the next day.

My sister has a recipe that is so nice. cures very hard but has a nice lather and isn't drying. after unused bars have been sitting for a year, the bars certainly do last longer than after the first month. perhaps its the recipe you use. also, i store my handmade soap bars outside of the shower, to let them dry. they last much longer. I also don't usually run the bar under water. instead i simply use my wet hands to lather and i set it down. most any soap bars i use seem to last forever.

First attempt was not brilliant, I squirted aftershave in it while it was "trace" that soon disappeared and it's a bit harsh, made with stale sunflower oil. Second batch, classic recipe using olive oil/coconut oil and some lavender essential oil (which subsided pretty fast). Today's batch: olive oil/rapeseed oil/coconut oil and ...LARD! essential oils mixed with cornstarch ...fingers crossed :-) Thumbs up/subbed.

Hi John. Very informative no-nonsense advice. I started soaping earlier this year and made a beautiful lavendar soap - rooky error to mix the buds through the mix (very scratchy). I also made Olive oil soap - they also turned out very well - a lovely light creamy colour, well cured now & very moisturising. I've been looking for info about using expired kitchen oils for soaping i.e. macadamia, avocado, olive oil. I know essential oils go off and affect the soap. Is it the same for cooking oils - if I can't cook with them can I still use them in soap making? Thank you.

I've seen other videos where people have unmolded their castile olive oil soap after 24 hours and have started using it and it would be rock hard and produce a very nice lather. Plus someone told me that they had added 1 tablespoon of sodium lactate to their soap and that it made the bar extremely hard and nearly impossible to cut after 24 hours.

Yep! While any soap can benefit from more cure time, there's no real reason that it can't be used right away. Even when the bar gets harder from more cure time, the soap acts like a sponge in the shower and gets a soft surface again pretty quickly. The bottom line is that once the lye is converted you're good to go 😁

Ey uncle john, i really like your channel. I've recently started with soap making.... bought some stuff and started doing the soap making. One succesfull batch made of sunflower oil with coconut.... worked out fine.... little bit on the soft side to my opinion but super proud :)... in al my enthousiasm i started making a 2nd batch.... i wanted it to be a harder batch of soap but ran out of oil.... so instead of only coco and sunflower.... i made a batch of coco (130 grams), sunflower(825 grams) and wheat oil( 45 gram,) total of 1 kilogram aka 1000 grams...not a perfect recipe.... for a harder soap, but like i said, ran out of oil. 5 % superfat 30 % naoh , (328.38 grams of water) lye (140.74 grams)... i have a scale that doesnt go beyond 0. Etc... only 1 gram... not 1.4 gram for example... just one gram at the time.... so i made lye round of to a 141 grams and water 328 grams... does it come so super precise? I'm on fire now ;) and getting more adventurous, LOL and wanted to put some essential oil in.... i've read online it is ''safe' like european standards to put in 3% of essential oils in your soap.... they're are talking 'bout the weight of the carrying oils... my batch is 1000 grams so 3 % is like 30 grams..... i've only put in 1% so 10 grams....( lavender)... i cured my soap for a day but is was still gue if i spelled it correctly... and like you explained in your video.... it also zapped my tongue.... so i let it rest for another day.... the soap came pretty decent out of the form'' so it was decently hardened... but then..... LoL i took it under the shower.. it started to get crumbley.... i could made a ball of it with my hands.... but then the worst part.... i'm washing my beard with it and it started to burn..... i quickly rinsed of.... i'm still in one piece and everything.... but i'm wondering...... where did i go wrong.... that the batch isn't very hard .... i get it.... because of the oils i've used.... i'm pretty sure i measured everything correctly.... did i just over do the essential oils.... even though i only used 1% of the total weight so in this case 10 grams.... how much should'''/can you put in it? Depends on taste... i know but for safety...or.... should i buy a more precise measuring tool because it only does 1 grams...? Soooo.... uncle John.... i hope you have time to answer my question.... i'm liking your videos.... a badass looking dude making dope soap.... greetings from the Netherlands.

Wow great info I was miserable thinking I had to wait six to eight weeks on my cold process soap I tried using mine after 4 days as hand soap then said ok I didn't die, so I showered with it, it was my first bar I ever made (made a 42 oz loaf) and this guy was right it worked great the info he gave was accurate, I just made three more loaves today will unmold tommorow. Thanks for the great information. Finally someone who doesn't try and scare you and explains how to test it, (zap test) I subscribed this video was what I needed.

Awesome! Yeah.. I find that with anything we find on the internet, there are a few zealots who seem to control all the information and scare us into thinking that things are way harder and there's only one way to do them..lol. Then there's the crowd that just follows along because these people are experts and the tend just snow balls from there. Thanks for watching!

I just made a batch that took 2 days to set up or harden enough to remove from the mold- it's curing ok now. The (different recipe) batch before that one was hard enough in 3 hrs. One was Lard, the other Coconut oil. I don't intend to sell soap. I'm a hobbyist. I like to try anything and everything until I get good at it. I have a recipe that works perfectly every time and another one I'm still trying to fix, but I'll get it right if it takes forever. We do have enough soap to last us many years now. I need to know how to store it.
