Nick Rattigan is the visual artist, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter behind yelpy, post-punk inflected indie bands Surf Curse and Current Joys. He created Current Joys as a way to unify his mutual love for film and music, and subsequently directed multiple music videos for the project. The grimy, thunderous songs themselves exist to free Rattigan from generalized anxiety as they embody the cyclical entrapment of the disorder while offering catharsis for those who share his experience.

Goddd the intro riff... The rhythmic motif - so good. DISCLAIMER: Voice dictation sucks ass that’s why this is long but it’s also kind of a dissertation on the man himself, so strap in if you can read good-ly-- here we go): -- how do these doods do it? i ask myself look to ^ and select others for inspiration, how to be rad, performance seems to me, if ur singin and u give anything less than 100%, even 99%- it’s prob, for me anyway, gonna be flat, sharp, or just lame/tame so these little take aways, viewing nock never seeming to dip under 160% ♾♾♾♾ He screams, and his vocal chord’s “tube amp break up point of tone =👌, makes me realize u have to TRY HARD- go harder than u think live, and for me, it’s like- putting 20 yrs into this music/recording path- with 0 regrets- Setting up all ur gear- time crunch pressure XYZ variables, etc, its a lot to have to scramble in to play a set, esp w ppl watching so i get really in my head and feel stressed. And in “A Different Age” live version, he steps on his cable because he is rad ing so Got damn hard, but w a smile on his face, laughs it off, solves the problem, And like- how he comes back in strong aF, literally with one hand strumming the (Presumably drop tuned? gtr?) HE DID NOT GIva fuuuuk. just like BOTH audio trees. Watch the current joys YT live audiotree session... During “my spotless mind” he rocks so hard his headphones FREAKEN fly off, and get hopelessly tangled around the guitar neck- Doesnt. drop. Shit. Keeps going. He places the song and that moment w total importance- and i know just like me- but prob much MORE so, somehow-- cuz music is sacred to me- I know for Sure that Nick feels the same way, because I hear it- the gut wrenching emotional vocals- the projecting, somehow being a little “out of tune” (“Hour of the Wolf” - listen to the 2nd chord of the 4 chords.... start: “12345678 ~~~~ Theres 0% chance that is not completely Intentional. perhaps the guitar is even tuned a certain way b4 the song- Who knows- but i hear that and go Jeeeezus Chrimus, that is brutal and PERFECT. Its fucking NUTS. I could give other examples basically I’ve learned a ton just watching and listening to this man and his projects. And truly value the things I have observed and pull from now myself. Because sometimes and out of tune guitar sounds perfect And sometimes your headphones fly off because you rock too hard. And then it’s hopelessly tangled, and you don’t drop the song. You don’t have to be. You keep going. Even if your guitar is it out of tune mess. The energy makes up for that. And it straight up tight man. Thanks for reading they achieve that blatantly “bad?” sounding (dissonance), some strings sharp/flat- who knows. the band of course Listen to audio tree

I don’t know why I write these out but I know somewhere out there someone agrees with me. Because honestly some things are like beyond opinions they’re just almost fax at this point. In fact it’s built into Nick’s last name bro he’s rad again and again and again. Demonstrably. As a music teacher myself now, I study this shit try to re-create it and thanks Nick. I hope this helps anyone on their own musical journey. You do it because you love it. The weeknd- Honestly I could give a shit less because it doesn’t really kill me. Emotionally, yeah the production is great whatever so is basically everyone. Then listen to wild heart. I’ll take a wild heart any day. Because that weekend song number five on Spotify has literally over 1,550,850,000 plays. There are 8 billion people on earth So don’t get discouraged if you feel like your mixes don’t sound as great as Drake. Keep in mind that they have an entire team of people backing these artists. Marketing, lawyers. I don’t have any of that shit so when I get my stuff on Spotify, I am proud. And I met that goal and I’m proud of that shit. Just look at the lyrics to kids. Google that shit. Look how long it is, how it’s formatted, once again, I’ve never come close to writing a song/poem anywhere remotely close to that long. I’ll never really know who Nick is realistically, that would be a fun fucking day I’ll tell you that. But it doesn’t bum me out because thru his music, I know all I need to know. Legenddd.
