I knew we weren't going to get through all the history units we planned, but by this point, I certainly expected to get through more. We didn't complete all our units in part because I kept adding to them and in part because I overpacked these units to begin with. No worries. I'll just carry over these units into the following year and pick them back up in the winter.
I do have this curriculum review to share with you as well as audio samples of the CDs we used for this unit and our Colonial Times Unit study. At the end of the video you can also see what my 5th grader's main lesson book looks like.
If you want to see the projects we did for this unit, you can watch the playlist.

Listen my Children and you shall hear! That book was one of my favorite from my own childhood. I LOVE Genevive Foster! Lover her! This was a great video. Thank you for sharing! I added a couple Betsy Maestro books to my amazon cart. :)

I feel like such a late comer to the Genevieve Foster party!! I'm impressed with her work and I hope that whoever buys her books based on my enthusiasm isn't disappointed! I'm glad you got a few of Maestro's books. They are fantastic. -Hana

I watched this video several months ago and absolutely loved the Maestro series. I had never seen it before! Anyway, I scoured KZfaq to find this video again and I’m so glad I did! Thanks for sharing all the great resources. I know you mentioned you make your own unit studies. How do you choose which books? There are so so many and I want to read them all haha. Also, I know it’s a long shot, but do you know of any formal curriculum that adds the Maestro series into their lessons? Thanks so much!

Love all your videos! How long do you usually spend on a unit study? It seems like you always have a ton of resources; do you use them all?
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you :) I spend anywhere from 4-12 weeks on a unit. I usually add a lot of resources. The best way to see what we end up using is by checking the review videos like this one. I'll go through the materials we used (and didn't use) and that way you can get a better idea of what worked and what didn't work or what we never got to.

I love your extensive knowledge on History curriculum. I’m about to embark on this journey with my 2nd grader and preschooler, and I’m in the midst of planning and trying to get everything together. I’m a little stumped on History. I will be doing a social studies that covers a little of everything and also a World History. However, would it be too much to include American History for my second grader? When do they typically begin American History in Elementary?

Thank you Alexandria! Our Waldorf curriculum suggests American History for 7th and 8th grade. For second grade our curriculum suggests native American legends, which is connected to American history. Maybe the stories of the native American Indians or the hand work or nature study like survival skills will work well.

Hana, did you make up your own history units? My 9yo is really into history so these would be some great books for him.

Hey Rachel, yes, for the most part I do make up my own history unit. I used to find more inspiration in our waldorf curriculum, but these days, I get over excited when I'm 'shopping' for school material and from that comes our massive unit studies! I use Rainbow Resource often. I like their search engine and often find a lot of what I need there. I use Barnes and Noble when I can't find a book at Rainbow Resource. Of course Amazon is awesome as well. -Hana

Do the CD's come with the lyrics... since we don't do music... would like to sing them out myself to my children?
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 6 жыл бұрын
Salam Dina, no, they don't come with lyrics, but you might look into Jim Wisse audio books. He might occasionally do a little singing as well, but with no musical instruments if I remember correctly. He has a large assortment of history and science CDs.
