I think a water channel between the plate and the edge of the hull would keep water from pooling on the corner, also since you are doing saltwater on a permanent mount, I would advise you to retreat the aluminum with alodine and zinc chromate, paint alone will not be enough corrosion protection. I treat aluminum parts for aircraft that work the oil wells in the gulf. Great video and nice boat.

Suggestions; Next time...use 1/4 or 5/16" plate (unless you get free metal). Put a radius on all the exposed square corners and use a router and a radius bit to round off the long edges. Better to not paint, just let the aluminum weather to gray and whiten it with Aluminum Brightener now and then. Avoid using silicone as it can promote corrosion, better to use a polyurethane sealer. Lube all your stainless hardware with "Super TefGel" to guarantee you can take things apart in the future.
@OutOnTheReef3 жыл бұрын
very great tips thanks captain👍👍👌⚓
@thilltony33623 жыл бұрын
Very nice! Thanks for posting this video! I rig boats for a living, and I have a few suggestions that you may appreciate... 1) Run a 3/8" round-over router bit around the edges to make it smooth, rounded, and much easier on feet. (and really custom looking, too) 2) After sanding and cleaning, use Rustoleum Aluminum Primer, from H. Depot or Lowes first. It makes the paint stick much more permanently to aluminum. 3) Paint before bolting it down makes it easier and faster. 4) You should put a circle of Loctite sealer around each bolt hole on the top, bottom, and between the starboard and the aluminum to prevent leaks. A thin bead of loctite around the perimeter of the aluminum and the starboard will prevent corrosion on the bottom of the aluminum, and creeping moisture coming in from the sides. Capillary action is powerful. Water will find a way in, if not sealed.. 5) A backing plate or even very large fender washers under the fiberglass would support it stronger, especially when trailering and in rough seas. Cheap insurance from the fiberglass cracking. You can always do some or all of this stuff at another time, if you ever re-do the work. But again, very nice! Thanks for the video!
@OutOnTheReef3 жыл бұрын
Wow Captain those are very awesome suggestion especially the one around where both plates meet you're right if water goes to the dare don't start doing some damage what Imma do between the plexiglass starboard and the aluminum I will put a beat-up Marine adhesive there. Thanks so much for your great input Captain is very appreciative
@johnm57143 жыл бұрын
My thoughts also were to put some meat underneath in the anchor locker. PL some 3/4” marine grade plywood to that and let it set up-that’s a forever deal with no second guessing...
@thilltony33623 жыл бұрын
@@johnm5714, I agree, a full plywood backer is cheap insurance and easy to do. Wrap some carpet around it, if you don't like the looks of it. Bouncing on the road when trailering is extremely stressful. A backer plate will take away any worries..
@thilltony33623 жыл бұрын
@@OutOnTheReef, You are very welcome. It's best to loosen the bolts, and lift up the layers to put the sealer between them. It looks better, and won't ever come out. Might as well use all the sealer you have, as it goes bad once you open it. Again, thanks for the great video!

I just had a 1/2 in aluminum plate fail. The machine shop sold me cast aluminum. Said it was some high grade stuff. Dropped an 80 in rhodan in the drink. Your plate looks good
@OutOnTheReef3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about your plate Captain I know it's very frustrating after you do everything to have a part failure. And my aluminum plate I got it Amazon it was $74 and a hat gray reviews that's why I rather buy my stuff at Amazon because of the reviews of consumers before me. Thanks for your comment captain

Cast aluminum is brittle... BUMMER! Always use rolled or forged aluminum if it will face stress, bending or impact, but I guess you know that now. Sorry to hear about that loss!

Having added an 82lb (24 volt) Minn Kota Riptide with Co-pilot/Autopilot to my Walkaround, you may encounter issues with battery usage (you will need to install another battery charger and get quality AGM batteries that can take a beating and will not Off-gas while charging like Lead Acid batteries). Your boat, as does mine, sits much higher above the water, and creates a large provide for the wind and waves to push and change the angel of the boat. It is going to require a lot of trolling motor adjustment (left/right) to stay anchored on a single location in moderately windy days. I also had many, many boards replaced on my Minn kota Riptide. The trolling motor just starts turning (except when on Autopilot) and that appears to be an indication that the board it bad. I hope it works out for you Good luck
@OutOnTheReef3 жыл бұрын
Awesome suggestions captain and yes the 82 lb Works harder and waste more battery because it has less power when you go to 36 volts I believe for being a bigger motor you waste less battery I think you're on the power. I just released my battery is deletion in charger can you please look at this video on my channel the recent one and let me know if this equipment is a good one and also the batteries they are AGM

I have the same minnkota and you will want to get a trolling motor support. Because the shaft is so long the head unit can hit the deck when stowed and travelling in rough seas. Ram mounts as well as anglers pal make them and can be purchased on amazon. I use the anglers pal so I don’t have to install anything on the motor. It is a must to save the motor.
@OutOnTheReef3 жыл бұрын
Awesome suggestion captain and yes I already got one I will be installing it soon thank you for the heads up cap .

In the meantime, you can run a bungee cord from the top of the motor around the railing to support it.

I like how you did it. I have a similar boat and have been trying to figure out how to mount it without cutting the bow rail and without having it stick out to far off the boat. I only wonder why you didn’t paint the aluminum plate before final install? I would’ve taken the time to have it powder coated so it would hold up better then paint.
@OutOnTheReef3 жыл бұрын
Yes that would have been great but I didn't have time for it I was in a very tight schedule but it came out good and if I ever need to paint it again I just do the same thing again didn't take that much time is very simple. And if you plan to do your boat if it's similar to mine you have to make sure your bow rail is as high as mine or higher to make it work this way if it's shorter it would not work cap.
@TheSitgeta3 жыл бұрын
@@OutOnTheReef what is the hight of your bow rail where you install the minn kota? Thanks and nice video!
@uncommonsense93952 ай бұрын
I'm getting ready to install a bow mount trolling motor on my Grady White walk around cuddy. Similar to your boat I'm going to have to do a bracket and I also have a tall bow rail like your boat. Its been 3 years now, are there any changes you would make to how you did the installation? How has that Rust-Oleum paint held up? Thanks for all the great videos. I've stolen several of your ideas.
@OutOnTheReef2 ай бұрын
Thank you, captain. I really appreciate you. Watching my channel and yes, use my ideas and make them better. And there's nothing I would change. The pain is okay if you have to touch up later. There's no big deal, captain, but I will do it all over the same. And I hope yours come out great
@freerangehuman70163 жыл бұрын
I don’t like how it sticks out past the rub rail. Hopefully it doesn’t become a problem for you when you’re docking up against pilings. Minnkota makes a quick release mount that’s very nice and easy to install you could have use that on top of your riser plates this would’ve made it so that you could remove the Minnkota anytime you want for storage or security or if you just want to move it out of the way during docking procedures.

HI Captain, I bet your getting sick of questions about this install....but it was soo good. I am about to pull the trigger on a trolling motor for my Parker 2110. Do you have any regrets not going with a longer shaft motor? I fish off of the northern California coast and would love to add the Motorguide xi5 because it will integrate with my Simrad. My only concern is the 72" shaft.
@OutOnTheReefАй бұрын
Hello cap. And if I had to it olover again I would still go with the 72 shaft, I'd the perfect one for my boat

Great job I have a pilot house 21 foot also I want to install the trolling motor also. Are you happy with the minn Kota? I’ve been researching which type to buy. Would you go with a Rhodan? The minn kota has a 100 inch 36 volt I’ve been planning on using that one.

Looks real nice, I'm hoping to do something similar on my 25 Boston whaler Outrage, kind of tricky though being foam filled.. I'd probably put bigger chamfers or radii on the mounting plates, just not to jamb my toes.. ouch.. my luck I'd jamb my toe and fall off the boat from the excruciating pain.. I saw on Amazon minn Kota makes a quick removal mounting plate.. something you can add if you think it may be useful.. Is this the same boat you had before without the pilot house, and you just added the pilot house? Cheers!
@OutOnTheReef3 жыл бұрын
the boat i had before was the Yamaha 190 FSH and i trade it for the Crooked PilotHouse Boat and what i did with my installation was that i study and plan for a month and then i made my move, i recommend to study your installation that way there is no mistakes especially after opening holes cap. thanks for the great suggestion and for watching my channel and hope you have a great installation 👍⚓
