Thanks for another great video Jason. Just wanted to throw out there that I am loving my 2022 Rocky Mountain Instinct that I recently got from Mike at Utah Mountain Biking. He was awesome. I also got the carbon 50 and upgraded a few things to my liking and to lighten it up a bit. Interestingly, I am the same height as you and also have a medium, but I tried to make the reach longer. Pushed the seat as far back as it will go and put a 50mm stem on. It still feels too short. haha. I almost got a large, but didnt want the long wheelbase.

Man I just got my ripley. Soon as the snow goes, it's time to give it the full season shakedown. I just thrown a 140 shaft into the factory front. I think it's around 28lbs in a size xl. I'd love to get it down to around 26 lbs but I can't imagine it being less than another 3-4k on an already 5 figure machine. One day. After trying to ripmo Af, the weight and reality of my riding style put me on the ripley and I'm so stoked!

I just bought a 2023 Element C70 for riding my local trails in Charlotte. I have a Rocky C70 Altitude that I ride in Pisgah and bike parks on the weekends. It took 4 or 5 rides to figure the Element out. It has a very unique personality. I considered upgrading to a Fox 34 140mm grip 2, but now that I have the suspension dialed in, I'm staying with the spec. It's crazy smooth for a 120mm shock. Rocky nailed this suspension. This bike feels so much bigger in person than on paper. Have not messed with the flip chip ride 4 thing yet. I did take it to DuPont the other weekend when my son was racing the Southeast Enduro at Kanuga. I did the Burnt Mt to Big Rock figure 8, then hit the Jim Branch to Hooker Creek to Hickory Mt Loop to Ridgeline. Had multiple personal bests on strava and was not really going for speed. Just trying to get to know the bike. Will probably go to 4 piston brakes. This ride is AMAZING.

Love your new build and being a Canadian brand. Can you compare this to your Pivot 429 trail. I just got the Pivot Enduro 429 last week. I know you said the regular build was good enough but I need to say the Fox 36 Grip2 and the Float X are premium shocks and drastically improve the riding of a bike in technical terrain. I am amazed the 429 is only 120 rear and 140 front. It feels so much deeper and still climbs amazing. These short travel bikes are getting so much better. I have the older version of the Trek Top Fuel (25lbs 120X115 travel) climbs great but no where near the descending capability of the 429.

Jason--beautiful RM! Now I feel guilty...selling one of your past favorites-- previous gen. '18 RM Instinct (140mm/140mm) and picking up my new '22 Stumpjumper Expert next week. I fell for your raves about it and almost went with the 429 Enduro but decided the Stumpy was the poor-man's version! I've always appreciated your reviews especially as a one-bike-at-a-time rider. You teased a little about comparing the new Element to the Stumpjumper so I can't wait. Once I got hooked back into MTB, your reviews have made the PNW winters bearable, keep doing what you're doing!
@mtbyumyum

Wow sweet bike! Some day I would love to hear your thoughts or comparison between the alloy version of the Element and the Ripley AF. The geometry numbers are very similar and the Alloy 50 Element and SLX AF have similar component spec as well. The Element frame is prettier to my eye and the adjustable geometry is nice, but then there is the DW link on the AF. Maybe a topic to discuss on a future live stream or review.

Such a nice build. Well done! I built mine ground up in November/early December and have really been enjoying it (well... enjoyed it before the snow came). One thing that I'd love to hear your thoughts on is suspension set up. I have really have struggled to dial in the settings and it would be great to hear where'd you ended up re psi, rebound and spacers. (This is especially greedy of me, given that I think we're about the same size (Im 5'8", 135lbs)).
@mtbyumyum
@mtbyumyum 2 жыл бұрын
Took me time getting it just so… dps comes w a .2 volume spacer that I swapped out for a .4 and have the shock at 170 psi and rebound at 7 clicks from full fast. So far so good. I have an urge to speed it up but I lose that amazing traction….
@technovelodos
@technovelodos 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve also got the C50 and initially struggled with setup. In the end I had to really vary the psi from initial sag to the point where I ended up with 15psi more in the shock and 15psi less in the fork than I started with. So I’m now running 167psi rear and 67psi front. I’m 153 lbs. I also removed one of the 2 volume spaces in the fork. Anyway I love this bike now it’s dialed in.

My Large C50 was right at 28 pounds. I have only upgraded the brakes to XT and put a Wolf Tooth dropper on, and ordered Nobl wheels with CK hubs that will hopefully arrive in April. I don't have many miles on it yet, but the Element Climbs much better than my Ripley AF. But the AF feels more confident downhill. Tires could be the reason for both of this. I too got my Rocky from UMB. Mikey is the best dude!

Thank you! I've moved away from riding footage for a few reasons.... time and sounding overly repetitive. It takes a lot of time to film and edit a lot of riding footage. As my kids have been getting older the time I spend here is time stolen from my wife, kids and other hobbies so it has become a challenge balancing things. Overly repetitive. I would sort of ramble and say thing multiple times about the bike or experience that I didn't feel stoked to publish in a video... giving a more thoughtful review after a few days of riding give me a chance to clear my thoughts and be more deliberate about what I'm saying. In any case, every misses my original way of doing these reviews.... just blabbering on about the bike as I ride... with a lot more interesting footage. I actual have about an hour of footage on this bike from my first ride last November... maybe I'll edit it and publish it here and see what the response is like? Thank you for your feedback, I always appreciate knowing the minds and interests of the people here on the channel. Thank you!

@@mtbyumyum Jason: I'm a big fan of yours because your reviews are spot on and no BS. Most helpful to people deciding on MTBs and deciding on other equipment. THANK YOU! I know you have a full time job that supports your putting this VLOG together. thanks again! But just as in writing, video editing is very time-consuming. So I can't help wondering if you shouldn't consider getting a part-time professional video editor who could free you up for more time with family/friends and your other interests (skiing?). Depending on what your "day job" is, I'm guessing it's way less physically demanding than MTB'ing and/or skiing. So relish your current MTByumyum days and extend them for all of us by considering distributing the functional vs. visionary/creative aspect of your efforts. Rubber side down! Rule #1 is FUN! 🙂

@@mtbyumyum Totally get it! I was actually referring to posting footage of your other rides not necessarily talking about the bike you are on. More just POV rides that you do around Utah. You’re an absolute beast on the bike and it’s fun to see YumYum ride his bike just for fun and not worrying about what to say about the bike or how it’s feeling. I’ve found a handful of your rides like in AF canyon and down in Moab and love seeing it. Anyways just a thought. Love the channel and appreciate the reviews!! They’ve helped a ton! Maybe sprinkle in a pov ride once every month or two.

Thanks JD. Yeah, I don't think I could afford a editor at this point.... the channel doesn't really make much money although these recent "featured ads" for The Pro's Closet.... have been helpful. These are Salt Cycles carbon wheels. Sourced from China like more carbon stuff… they’ve been using these for years with much success. I’ve personally been riding these carbon hoops for over 4 years! Don’t love the dissector tire… rode it for a season when it first came out. At first I was excited but honestly, think the Rekon does everything better beside braking power

Hey Jason, I’m looking for a rocky mountain. I’m in between the instinct and the element. The element seems more upright. That would help my back, but the instinct is more plush. What are your thoughts? Thanks.

Super nice bike, I’m thinking of putting all XTR Drivetrain on my HD5, still using the stock NX stuff and it’s needing to be replaced. 25lbs… that’s crazy light. Does it feel stable and is it stiff enough? I have a Pike ultimate on my hard tail, it is nice but I prefer the Fox 36

Hi Jason! Having watched your review of this bike , I went ahead and got myself a C50, and upgraded the wheels to carbon with DT Swiss 240 and changed the cassette to Xtr. But what I want to ask you, is if you think this bike would benefit from a Fox DPX2 instead of the DPS, which seems a bit harsh a times through rough sections. A bit of weight penalty, but not in a place that would matter too much, right?
@mtbyumyum
@mtbyumyum Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I actually just saw a guy who swapped out the DPS shock on his Ripley for a float X. You might consider the float X. It actually might be a pretty good fit for that bike. It’s got very good geometry to go fast in fact, it’s very similar geometry to the IBIS ripmo which comes with a Float X or an X2 depending on what year you bought it.

You will never find a better, stronger, lightweight, practical crankset as Shimano XT or XTR. Plus they are the simplest to install of any system and the bottom brackets are dirt cheap. I was interested in this frame but short chainstays are a no go for me. Otherwise looks perfect!

After a few weeks or a month on it I started to recognize how long the bike was. It had good traction in the corners but sort of lacked that real zippy feeling I appreciate from a short travel bike. I still really love the bike but for me, I usually own 2 bikes at a time and this for me was bleeding too much into the longer travel category. I still really like this bike a lot and could make it work in my quiver but I was just spending too much time on my shorter travel Ibis Exie and when I needed more bike I would reach for the Ripmo instead of this Element.

Hey man, been watching your content for a while. Great work. I heard you compare this rocky with the spur. I don't understand how the rocky is better at handling and easier to ride vs the spur, and the spur is more demanding. The geos are so similar. Rocky being a little slacker and longer, shouldn't it be the opposite results? Can you elaborate a little please. Really looking to pull the trigger on one here. Actually spur is about to be delivered but I might return or sell for the rocky. I need a snappy bike, But good at handling dh as well.

@@mattdelcomyn8012 The Ripley transitions through changing terrain quicker. Feels more snappy and playful. The exciting thing about the Element is how stable it is and how much traction it has in the corners from that long wheels base. It sort of feels like a shorter travel Ibis Ripmo in some ways... after a few months of riding the Element, I got back on a Ripmo and was shocked at how similar they felt in the corners on smoother blue trails. I then got back on a Ripley and couldn't believe how much quicker and lively it felt in comparison. I missed the snappy feeling of the Ripley. It was energizing and decided to sell the Element and buy another Ripmo... it's a more capable Element after all and I had an Exie for the more XC sort of days... hope this helps. I also had a number of pedal strikes with the Element and I really do not like those.

So the intel is thin! ; ) I too come from an XC background and love the up as much as the down. But I recently moved to Bellingham, WA and Mt Galbraith has gobs of trails with many miles of gnar downhills. So I still think the Element might be just the right mix for this XC rider eeking his way into the enduro scene! ; ) The element just arrived to my local shop yesterday - after a 7 month wait. So my thinking/researching time has come to an end. Time to pull the trigger I think! Thanks buddy!!!
