I've completed my investigation into the Atari VCS campaign and found it is way sketchier than anyone has reported. Yea, these backers are in for a lot of pain.

Hello there.

Hiya Metal Jesus Rocks...Love your videos..... Tempest 4000 just came out today. All it needs is DX10 graphics card. A cheap used $70.00 or less laptop with an I3 will run it. Anyone who thinks the Atari VCS will not be able to run it is crazy. I still would not waste a single penny on the Atari VCS. Just use Emulators and get AtariDaptor to use old controllers with USB port. The only thing nice about the Atari SCAM VCS is its looks.

I remember a game that came out in 2014 called Minimum. It was made by Atari, Human Head Studios, and Cubed Productions. I fell in love with the gameplay and grinded the game. One day, everybody lost their progress and the servers were down. Turns out, the developers just dropped the game and ran with our money. The servers eventually came back up years later but no one plays anymore.

Stopdrop&retro - want to know more about the Atari VCS modern controller bait & switch... Contact Dreamgear and ask them for an interview regarding their exclusive deal with Atari that they would provide their design, engineering & firmware to Atari to be the exclusive manufacturer & have 2 yrs exclusive selling the Atari controller direct as a 2nd controller to buyers Then Atari rewrote the contract and took out all exclusiveness for Dreamgear then announced their first IndieGoGo and Dreamgear formerly contact Atari and withdrew from all deals with Atari and then Atari had no controller for the VCS and had to show a solid plastic mock-up at GDC... I know everything going on behind the scenes so there’s your tip now go after it.

The other dead giveaway with the Tempest 4000 clip, is the Atari prototype isn't even hooked up to anything; much less powered on! Go back and look again, no wires going to the actual prototype console sitting off to the side. I was kind of excited when I first heard about this console, but I'm getting convinced it's never going to happen. I'm glad I didn't throw any money at it. By the way, the specs mention something about Whole Home functionality?? Another nail into the coffin, how in the world would the Atari prototype do any kind of Whole Home anything???
@pinballwiz45b6 жыл бұрын
I was just thinking about that too, coincidentally. Looking more closely, I didn't see any lights on that T4k video. Still scummy.
@ChrisCromwellHP6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it looked really promising at first and I was actually thinking about getting one after release. But its turning out to be more and more of a created Slush Fund with nothing to show for it. Other than one expensive 3D Printed plastic shell with a media panel on the back and LED light on the front. No one ever thought about taking a pic of the inside!! I'm glad now I didn't throw $200 at it, this is just like the Elio Car project. One non-functional prototype, and tons of broken promises for years and years. It's a clever new way to Slush Fund so you won't ever have to work again out of college. Where do you think the money came from for those fancy new Atari T-Shirts those kids are wearing in the videos? If I had $2.5+ Million, I would be sitting around too faking it with a controller all day. I don't think there's anyone even in China working on this.
@StopDropRetro6 жыл бұрын
It's amazing that Atari still pretends like they don't understand why people are being so critical of their every move. They're such bullshit artists.
@ChrisCromwellHP6 жыл бұрын
Exactly, it's the worst kind of insult you can give people, but that's the new world today; really pitiful. Elio Motors STILL has no functioning prototype after all these years of BS, but at the very minimum they aren't insulting down their crowdfunder's either. 😕 Sadly people today decide all of your money is theirs, so when you object after giving it to them, they stomp down on you. It's today's kind of Socialism, you will never get it back.

Actually, the company currently operating as Atari acquired the brand in 2000, not 2014. It was formerly known as Infogrames, a French game developer. Infogrames changed their name to Atari after their purchase of the original Atari IP, which came with their purchase of Hasbro Interactive in 2000 (Hasbro had purchased the Atari IP in 1998 from the company that had acquired the original 1972 company). The current Atari filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and reorganized itself in 2014, with a new business strategy,, which may explain their somewhat heightened activity over the past 4 years.

Hahah. Clicked just because I thought this vid was just the boldest damn attempt at clickbait I've ever seen about the original VCS/2600, but lo and behold it turned to be one of the finest vids I've seen about the spiritual Coleco Chameleon -sequel. :D Perhaps that indeed was the strategy, and in that case; well baited! Especially effective since as a non-native English-speaker, the term 'CUT N' RUN' didn't mean anything to me without context, it just sounded like a generic game title. Great experience all around, subscribed. On the topic itself, this is just getting funnier and funnier + sadder and sadder all the damn time. Even knowing all this, many are still ok with supporting this fiasco. Some people are just as defeatist about the project as I am, but are still ready to dish out hundreds of €£$ on this vapour, just because it's got an Atari logo on it. I guess that's fandom for ya.
