When it comes to a router bit change on your CNC router, using the standard 2-wrench method can be cumbersome. It is almost a 3-handed task.
There is a much faster way to change your CNC router bits! It’s a new tool for your CNC router called a “Musclechuck”, or as some write it, muscle chuck.
The Musclechuck is an awesome bit-changing tool, and I might add, a bit revolutionary, idea for CNC Router bit tool changes that basically makes your bit change lightning fast on both trim routers and spindles.
In this review, I puts the Musclechuck to the test with an easy CNC router project on the Longmill MK2 CNC router. This particular unit is designed for the Makita trim router, which is commonly found on benchtop CNC routers. But they are also available for other routers and spindles.
For speed of a bit change, it passes with flying colors. The Musclechuck runs within 0.0015 runout which is very good for CNC woodworking. The grip is strong and the bit does not slip.
This product has passed the test and is now available at IDC Woodcraft.

I love the idea, but it does suck up z height a little, and I’m not sure how well it’s balanced with the grub screw on one side. If it’s not balanced well, couldn’t it damage the bearing after a while?

That was my first thought. Not only are the bearings going to wear out faster so too are the tools. I'm sure it would be fine if the RPMs we running less than 3000 but at high speed its just asking for trouble.

Garrett and Et al. I have in use a couple of these Muscle chucks now and able to get my run out between .0005 and .0002". The only downside is this type of chuck is it will not work well if your router bits shanks are under sized by more than a mil or mil and a half (.001" - .0015"). So, check your bits shanks before you start using this style of collet. I have had a number of times now the bit will come lose and ether slide up or down in the collet during normal operation.

Garrett, I can see what you are saying but I have a very expensive spindle which at 25000 rpm requires a highly balanced motion, that musclechuck does not look very symmetric and therefore unbalanced, can you explain how it is balanced?
@IDCWoodcraft
@IDCWoodcraft 6 ай бұрын
CNClewee, The Musclechuck is engineered to provide excellent balance and low runout, even at high speeds. The design includes features that contribute to its stability, such as a precision collet nut and a specialized collet system. These components work together to minimize vibrations and runout, resulting in a more accurate and smoother machining process. It's important to note that the Musclechuck is a reputable product used by many CNC enthusiasts and professionals in the industry. However, if you have specific concerns about your spindle or balancing requirements, it's advisable to reach out to the manufacturer of your CNC spindle for guidance. They can provide insights into the compatibility and performance of accessories like the Musclechuck with your particular spindle model.

There are several reasons why industrial CNCs cut better, more cleanly with less tear out and chatter as a benchtop cnc. First is rigidity. That can't really be upgrades or at least it's hard. Linear bearing are probably second. Ballscrews vs leadscrews vs belts would be probably next on the list and the list could go on and on. Somewhere on the list is going to be both run out and deflection of the bit. The less of both the better. I think it is a bad idea to forfeit both for the sake of gaining a few seconds. With benchtop CNCs trying to eliminate ever shortcoming possible is the goal and selling a accessory that clearly hurts performance is a 👎!! Garrett I know you work extremely hard to benefit the community and you help a lot of people. I just think this particular product needs to be considered carefully.

Garret my shopsmith uses the same type of clamping system to hold saw blades, sanders etc. The only real difference is the drive shaft is tapered so the blade cant walk out if the hexnut loosens up. Is there any concern that the nut will loosen and the bit come out?

One problem- the bits are all different sizes. 1.5 thou is a lot of run-out on a 20,000 RPM spindle. You really should use a DTI for checking this - a DI is too coarse. I just checked mine- 0.004mm runout; about a tenth of yours.

@@petermurphy3354 Would work for this, but never do it in a collet. A collet pulls the bit up as it is tightened, which affects the grip and could shatter the magnet (they are brittle).

Why not place the muscle chuck without the 3/4 inch nut? The shaft would be held by the original collet and everything else would be the same, wouldn't that work and be a little cheaper? Thank you I enjoyed the video.
@r2db
@r2db 7 ай бұрын
If you try to mount it into the original collet as a 1/4" shaft you are extending the device significantly, cutting into Z height and worsening the runout. If you make it so that it only accepts 1/8" end mills, yes that would work. However, 1/4" end mills are much better when they can be used, and you can't make a shaft bigger than 1/4" fit into these routers.

It will have equal or better run out when properly installed in your router. On mine I have a run out of .0002". Only downside is this type of chuck will not work well if your router bits shanks are under sized by a mil(.001 - .0015") and a half or more. So, check your bits shanks before you start using this style of collet.
