These videos have made me realize that Audacity is far more powerful than I imagined. Zero crossing and cut preview are beyond helpful for me. My editing just got simpler.

So how about if I have a video recorded outside let's say in a windy weather for example and I record the new part on my computer at home, is there a way to make it sound more natural and like part of the original clip or what would be the best way to do it? Thanks!

Phil, is there a way to highlight words, phrases and paragraphs that need to replaced? (I am making my way through your videos, which are extremely helpful.) I am spending a lot of time trying to (re)find the error after I have recorded the right word, phrase or paragraph.
@cajun5454

Do you mean you are editing, notice a mistake, record the right word and then not knowing where to stick it in the track? Yeah, that is frustrating. Just put your Selection tool (I beam)/ curser at the spot where the word will be inserted. Then start a new track right underneath (shift+record) and you will always know exactly where to put it. easy peasy.

@@mirandagroupschool You are probably worrying about nothing; changes in tone between pauses sound big to us but most people never even notice them. I've paused and stopped for days and weeks and then picked up and noone ever can even notice them even though the sound terrible to me. Try it, ask others and see. Save your concern for other stuff.

The problem I'm running into is that my Audacity doesn't automatically create a new track when I click Stop and place my cursor at a certain spot in the original track to try to record an addition or replacement. It jumps my original track all the way to the Right (end), and starts recording at the end there. I can record additions, and then essentially cut/paste them from the end to wherever I need it in the middle, but it is a hassle to scroll sideways so I can find the correct spot again, after being forcefully dragged to the end. When I go to the Track tab, to manually create a second (mono) track to record below the original track, I have to make sure I click on the second track to place my cursor where I want to record, otherwise it bumps me to the end of the original again. That's fine, but Audacity does this weird thing where it plays the original track simultaneously as I'm trying to record on the second one, which throws me off. I can turn the speaker down, to solve that problem, but... I guess I'm just not sure I'm doing it right, if I'm running into all these different problems... Any advice?

1. be certain you are using the I beam 'tool' known as the Selection tool. 2. Put this at the spot in front of your boo-boo. 3. press Shift+Record to make a new track; if you just click Record it will just start at the end of your recording as you say. This is new with newer editions of Audacity. 4. make your fix, copy and stick it into your original, then erase the extra track. Otherwise you will hear both of them as you say. Try that and get back to me. Hang in there it will get easier and easier. I really need to make a new video, eh?

@@cajun5454 "shift+record" is EXACTLY what I was missing. Thank you! This secondary track solves a real annoyance I have been encountering in my editing process, and this updated How-To makes it easily doable. So Thank you Thank you Thank you. The things you don't realize are options until you start exploring- essentially, the things you don't know you don't know- I find it fascinating.

Phil I have a question. I wish to record a long file (a three hour live music broadcast) and then later split it into segments that I can work with. This would be much like reading an entire book then splitting it into chapters. Any suggestions on how this could be easily done?

Any way I can copy over some words _without_ moving the original track to the right - I need this to for a singer who only has audacity to overdub vocals in time with a music track

Good tutorial! What I'm trying to do is replace a part of the audio track with a part of a different audio track. For example lets say I wanted to censor bad words and every time someone says a bad word I would want a beep sound. And I have a 20 seconds beep sound. I want to mark, so highlight, the parts to be replaced and then put in the beep sound that I copied into the C&P memory. If I paste over the marked part it will also shorten or expand the full length of the audio track if the marked part differs in length from the pasted part. But I don't want that to happen. So my question is: How can I replace ONLY the marked part without changing the length? Is there any other way than copying a part of the exact same length (which is really hard to do).

I suggest trying t he latest version of Audacity. they specifically built in things to edit mult iple tracks and do what you are wanting to do. Other than that i can't offer any suggestions, this is way beyond my competence. Good luck.

what if i want to continue recording where it was silent?
@cajun5454
@cajun5454 5 жыл бұрын
Where it is silent? Do you mean at the end? You can continue recording on the same track if you do Shift+R (in older Audacity like this one) or just R in the latest version. If you mean somewhere in the middle, I can explain that too. Just let me know and I'll make a video for you!

Very Interesting. You never actually teach, how to use the cut preview!!! All you say is to press the letter "C" which does nothing!!!
@cajun5454
@cajun5454 5 жыл бұрын
I did not realize that. The letter 'c' plays the track minus whatever is highlighted so I can hear what it will sound like if I cut that out. I have been using that tonight so it must work in the latest version. Sorry if I did not demonstrate that because it is very valuable tool.
