In this video I show how I cut piston relief into my pistons. I had the depth, but lacked proper radial valve relief. Now were in there!

There we go...a fixture...PLEASE share that with me and others!!!! Shit, I hope it works..if it does for you, it will for me. I wonder if deburring the edge that was left by cutting would let the flame travel over it smoother and not create a "hot edge" that was prone to burning under nitrous use. Even like a short bevel or "edge break" with scotch Brite or emery cloth or something. I'm just thinking of how that will change the burn characteristics compared to all of the reliefs being even ya know? Anyways..good shit...super intrigued and have saved BOTH of yr videos

@rdspeedfab
@rdspeedfab 2 жыл бұрын
Every setup is going to be different so you’ll definitely need to measure how much you need to remove. For mine, the pocket was deep enough, just not big enough for the valve so all I did was open it up to the valve size plus about .020 to give the valve some room.

in the future take smaller cuts, higher spindle speed, and set an air nozzle up to keep the chips out of the valve relief and you wont get as much chatter. but more importantly you wont get localized heating that could mess up the heat treat the factory put on the piston bro.

I’ve got the same pistons and I’m going through a similar issue but my pistons are still in the motor. Did you happen to check the piston to make sure it had enough meat to take away and still be structurally good?
@rdspeedfab

Yes I did. There is still plenty of meat under the relief cuts. Over .500. You’ll be good to go.

I would highly recommend you put a radius on that tool bit! 0.031 you bee happy you did cast piston ! Because it will cause a stress cracking in the corner

Hey Jack, I’m no machinist. Just a guy with some machines. The pistons are forged, not cast. Would you mind telling me the benefit of a radius in the tool? Always trying to learn.
@jackwillson8099
@jackwillson8099 10 ай бұрын
@rdspeedfab yes sir the reason you put a radius on the tool ,so there's no sharp corner in side the the piston pockets , sharp corner will crack the piston under Detonation or heavy nitrous hit

@jackwillson8099 oh okay, that makes total sense! Thanks for taking the time to explain that. Maybe after I blow this one up, I’ll use a radius in the future 🤣

@rdspeedfab you can all so put a radius on too of the piston pocket , the key is no sharp edges in the combustion chamber , the more power you make it, the devils in the detail learn that from pay musi 35 years ago

Ok, your problem isnt valve wobble and isnt piston rock. If these are your problems, your engine is whooped or your reliefs arent right. At tdc the valve cl crosses more toward the CENTER of the piston vs if the piston is further away from tdc where the valve cl crosses more toward the opposite edge of the piston. At 0, you have WAYYYYYY more than enough radial, because your valve isnt OPEN at tdc. It's either opening or closing depending if int or exh, thus, you dont need 100% radial clearance unless you want to make a 0 interference engine. (Like if you broke a timing chain/belt).. remember, piston cl is not parallel with valve cl. They have different crossing points depending on position.
@rdspeedfab
@rdspeedfab 3 жыл бұрын
I get what you’re saying and it makes total sense. The engine is still absolutely interference. I recorded piston to valve contact 15 degrees either side of TDC depending on intake or exhaust. I used the .050 radial figure because that’s what I found after some research. I had t done this before so I wasn’t sure what I was needed but.... the eyebrow in the piston wasn’t sufficient for the size of the valve hence the contact. I really didn’t make the pocket any deeper, just opened it up for clear the larger valve. Still tons to learn. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.

Get a valve relief cutting tool fond a old junk set of heads take the valve out of it set it down on the motor and use a drill to run the relief cutting tool through the hole in the head for the valve with the piston still in the block

That’s certainly an option. But this way I was able to get it done right, and maintain my balance because I weighed each piston and removed the same amount.

Brandon he doesn't need a cutting tool. Why would he buy a tool when he has a mill already? The mill does the job perfectly and all he has to do is clean the pistons. Alot less messy than the other way.

Ok...I am facing a extremely similar situation. Gosh I hope you read this...Alright..my setup and issue..65 comet, 289..don't wanna blow up the 289 so I got a E7 HO engine for 40 bucks. The bores are fantastic, rods, crank everything...perfect.. here's my issue..I'm NOT using the E7 heads, nor the factory cam. I'm getting a new cam, let's use F303 specs as a example. I am also using my world products Windsor Sr heads that have the 2.02 intake valves. I'm going to use the E7 factory forged pistons, rods and crank and just use new, gapped rings for N20 use, new bearings etc, etc. Ok enuff yakking...my question, aren't you concerned much abt taking that much out of each slug and it translating into a balance issue? I'm literally going to do the exact same thing yr doing and I'm curious...any thoughts or concerns abt that? I'm going to be hitting my engine with at minimum 150hp of spray to start and probly working up to 200. For what it's worth I'm going to attempt 1/8 mile hard tire no prep. That's my current jam here in Southern Michigan.

I’m honestly not concerned about it at all. All my pistons were balanced before I did this and I made the same cut on each of them. They should be all equally lighter. Besides, if you ever weighed a set of stock pistons you wouldnt worry so much. They’re all over the place. I think you’ll be fine.

If you mock up your heads and go through how much clearance you have throughout the different timing events, I think you'll find the F cam stays pretty safely away from the piston. ALWAYS check of course, even if some know it all like myself comes along and says it fits, I've been wrong before lol. But if I use a letter cam, F is my go to and I've stuck them in everything at one time and they seem to fit well in many configurations
@rdspeedfab

I’ve heard the same with the F cam.
@whiplashmachine
@whiplashmachine Жыл бұрын
@@rdspeedfab it's a wonderful cam. I've played with many cams and all the letter cams Ford offered. The F is a pretty good all round cam for someone thay wants to drive their car regularly with addded performance and sound. Never did get the whole E cam craze as I always found it unthrilling and lacked low end power without really giving any top end advantages to make up for it. I've stuck both in trucks with highway gears and tall tires and the E was really unhappy about it whereas the F manned up and didn't complain. Plus with the wider LS it ran smother. I actually prefere the stock HO over the E. I have an almost 11:1 347 with big heads and a factory HO in one of my Mustangs. Even my travel van has a HO cam with Roush 200's. Such a nice lil cam for a well behaved driver. Just add better parts and machine work and nobody even believe it's a stock cam lol.
