2 questions for you. 1. What do you think about adding coolers for CTV transmissions? 2. Nissan CVT fluid. Nissan brand fluid is very expensive, I have a nissan second hand and it is way past warranty. I am getting ready to replace the valve body. Are there quality Non Nissan brand CVT fluids I can use, Any recommendations on which are good or what to stay away from? Thanks for the video by the way, you answered something I was confused on, why some of the replacement valve bodies come with wiring for only one of the sensors, You mentioned prior to 2010. I was going to pull mine out before ordering a new one to see if it had one or 2 sensors hooked up, I am assuming now it is going to be 2.

This a great video Kennedy, thank you for posting. I have issues with my valve body after changing the stepper motor on a 2008 Nissan Sentra doesn’t want to back up, I notice that small round black plastic cylinder came out of the valve body, it looks like strainer or filter, and the mechanic not just put it in the wrong place but also broke it, now I am wondering where can I buy it that small cylinder and where exactly goes. In minute 3:32 you removed some of those cylinder but I couldn’t quite see the shape of them, there is anyway you can help me to figure out where that cylinder goes, also another metal cylinder that goes with spring on it came out and no idea where is it goes. I opened a valvebody for an SR20 Nissan Transmission and the place where the Tcc solenoid is supposed to be there is a hole with a open/close pin inside. I am beginning to think that the TCC solenoid is missing. Also the scanner shows bad stepper motor but a multimeter shows that the wiring in the stepper motor is still good. It also shows a bad line pressure solenoid (its a older model multimeter that shows codes 000e, 000b and 000f).

Transmission getting stuck in limp mode, stuck in a low gear. Also I believe it may bounce back and forth between gears like it does not know what gear it wants to be in. If your fluid is at proper level it could be valve body issue. If you are getting engine light with error code P0845 or P0840. Nissan has put out a service bulletin recommending replacing the valve body. I believe there are a couple other codes mentioned as well. It reverses very slow and will barely move forward. I mean I have the petal to the ground and nothing. I check the trans presure and got only a trickle coming out. Could valve body be clogged.

Fredy,Start with any Diagnostic Trouble Codes. Stepper motor circuit codes are a higher likelihood of a failed stepper motor than performance codes. Stepper motor performance (or rationality) codes are very rarely caused by a failed stepper motor. If you have a good scan tool, you can watch the stepper motor position and make sure it is changing properly. On most Jatco units the stepper motor position ranges from 0 to 188 (on the live data you generally see only an indicated position of 5 or 7 to ~188). If the stepper motor is actuating properly, you should be able to correlate the position change with the ratio change. If the position changes as expected, but the ratio does not, it is likely something else causing the issue and not the stepper motor.Thanks,Matt Johnson

@phareztrinimand
@phareztrinimand 5 жыл бұрын
When it is bad your vehicle will lock in a ratio, for example, if it was in a 1:1 ratio when it fails, it will remain in that 1:1 ratio, its like keeping your car in 4th gear and driving, it won't cut off because of the torque converter.

Giovanny,If the secondary pressure low code is the only one being tripped, it is less likely to be a ratio control motor or pressure control solenoid issue. Have you made sure the fluid level is full? There will be often be pressure issues and a pump whine if the fluid is a couple of quarts low. You may want to clear the code and see how it drives once you verify the fluid level is correct.Thanks,Matt Johnson

Thanks for the video! We have a 2016 Nissan Quest with 26k that just had a valve body replaced. I noticed that while slowing down to a stop, when the CVt would switch into it’s lower “gear” ratio (a shift that can be perceived/felt around 5-7 mph while coasting) it would make a weird crunchy/grindy noise in that ratio. The car drove fine except for this noise. I was concerned bc I have two other CVt cars that do not make this noise upon slowing down/stopping. Any idea what inside the valve body would cause this?

Anton,On the Jatco 2 speed CVT's, it is very common for the high low shift quality to take a while to adapt in well after any sort of change. I have spent hours in a couple of cases performing the relearn and then doing a ton of slow accel/ decal driving to get the shift quality to come around. That being said, I have not had any noise issues after making any valve body changes or repairs. I do not think it would be anything in the valve body at all making the noise, but the valve body controls the application of the high/ low clutch and could possibly be doing something hydraulically to cause the clutch noise. If it does not lessen soon, I would bring it back to the shop that replaced the valve body and let them hear it. I am assuming this is a new valve body installed and adapted by a dealership or someone familiar with these transmissions.Thanks,Matt Johnson

Anton, There are a number of technical service bulletins regarding valve body replacement on these units, but none that I have seen pertaining to noise caused by a valve body issue. I would expect that the noise has been alleviated if they are having you pick the vehicle up. Assuming so, I suspect there may be a wear issue with the valve directing pressure to the high/ low clutch. Thanks, Matt Johnson

P1778 could certainly be caused by a mechanically faulty stepper motor. The P1778 is a performance code rather than an electrical code, meaning the controller is commanding a certain value, but not seeing the expected result (in either ratio or primary pressure) and not detecting an electrical failure with the stepper motor. If the code were a P1777 (electrical fault on the stepper motor ckt) , the likelihood of a stepper motor failure would be higher. That being said, it would be good to get the pan down, inspect metal content and the ration control valve when you test or replace the stepper motor. With just this code, if the issue is not the stepper motor it is likely internal; something impeding proper variator operation. I hope this helps.Thanks,Matt Johnson

If we do have those codes for the circuits of the solenoids and no step motor and no check engine light, by replacing just those solenoids could fix it and get the vehicle out of limp mode? @@splash5974 well since this comment I have took it on myself to rebuild the transmission in the Altima and have found out it is actually pretty simple... so if you're getting that code you might want to be ready to rebuild it sometime in the future... what happens is the input variator behind the torque converter moves in and out with changes the gear ratio, well there's no actual gears it is a belt... the variator stops moving smoothly due to lack of lubrication going to the slide balls... it starts to jam up which causes a code to throw for the stepper motor that reads this movement the start of this comes from the pressure control valve in the pump gets hairline scratches in it causing a fluid pressure loss... eventually you may get a low transmission fluid pressure code people think you don't have to change the fluid and filter on these for a very long time when in fact I would do it every 30000 miles.... these Transmissions are a very good transmission they just had a few failing points whatever it takes transmission offers a overhaul kit that is also an upgrade kit ..I ordered this kit from them and a upgraded pump.... I highly recommend this kit from them....

You may have to access the PID under Engine data though since your Jeep has a PCM rather than separate TCM and ECM; I know this is true for most of our scan tools.Thanks,Matt \

Kennedy Transmission, CVT & Auto Thank you Matt. The pid's available in the app as well as the supplemental downloads do not register proper readings for the CVT. Hello, We just put an used transmission of a 2008 Altima 2.5 engine in place of bad one. After we drove 30 feet, it gave P1777 step motor code. Instead of sending the unit back and get another one from the vendor under warranty, I am considering to change the step motor. However, in the video you say at 4:45 that a lot of times when you change the stepper motor, that is not the problem? So how can we figure out where the problem is? Also, I looked at Ebay and there are different kinds of step motor sold the same transmission when I enter Altima 2008. Some are RE0F10A, Some are RE0F10E, etc. How can I find out what kind of transmission is this? Does it say anywhere on the transmission? Basically, how can I find out which step motor needed for the transmission? Thank you in advance.
@kennedytransmissioncvtauto5430
@kennedytransmissioncvtauto5430 6 жыл бұрын
Everything I see shows the transmission as a Nissan RE0F10A (Jatco JF011E). Often times stepper motor DTC's are set by issues other than the stepper motor. However, with just a P1777 (circuit fault), there is a reasonable likelihood that this is just a stepper motor failure. Before going any further though, you should check your harness connection and pin tensions, clear the code and see if it returns. If it does, you may want to just install the stepper motor from the original transmission and test from there; unless you suspect it was the cause of failure. We have not had good luck with used CVT's and quit doing them all together a few years ago. Hopefully, the stepper motor (if needed) from the old unit will take care of the issue.Thanks,Matt Johnson

Thank you for your response. The weird thing is the code does not erase. You turn the key to on position, engine off. Erase. And when you read again, it is still there. Could not make it go away. Assuming your scan tool is getting the code to clear, it is likely a short or open in the stepper motor circuit that is instantly re-setting the code on key up. When the code returns instantly on key up, it points towards a stepper motor failure.Thanks,Matt Johnson

Just wondering if you guys could lend some info. I've got a 2008 Lancer GTS CVT, same model CVT as this valve body break down. I'm throwing a code P0840. My car still drives, but feels like its in limp mode all the time. I was planning on pulling the valve body to inspect everything. Any tips or things I should look for with this code? Have you guys dealt with this code often? Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated!
@kennedytransmissioncvtauto5430
@kennedytransmissioncvtauto5430 6 жыл бұрын
With the P0840, the unit is likely defaulting (locking itself into a single ratio to avoid potentially damaging itself). I am not sure what tools you have, but I would suggest verifying the fluid level is full, documenting any other codes that may be present, clearing all the codes and driving the vehicle gently with a scan tool hooked up. You would want to monitor the pressure sensor PIDS and make sure that they are reading correctly. If the P0840 returns immediately after clearing (or simply before driving), I think a replacement of the pressure sensor would be warranted even without further testing with a DVOM. Make sure to look at the pan magnets; if the metal content is excessive, it may already be to late.Thanks,Matt Johnson
@InfusedGamers
@InfusedGamers 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for the help! I have an OBDII scanner to just check and clear codes. The P0840 is the only code that I'm throwing related to the transmission. I have a P0420 for an O2 sensor as well. I have also thrown I think a P0725 in the past, but once or twice. Some days it'll throw the code immediately when I start the car, some days it takes a couple minutes, and other days it will drive perfectly fine. I don't have any tools to monitor the pressure readout of the sensors, but I'll definitely take a look at the magnets when I pull the pan. Thanks again for the help, hopefully it's not too late!

In order to make it work, I need to put the computer on my original valve body to the newly bought valve body before I put the 'new' valve body to my car. Did a fluid filter change after the over temp light came on, it ran well, for 6 or 8 thousand miles, now it whines and surges. Suggestions are welcome, I do most of my own work, but a auto trans rebuild is something I have not done. Dan, We are in Minneapolis, MN. When you replaced the filter, was there a lot of metal on the magnet or in the filter screen, or a lot of clutch material in the pan? Have you had the Jeep scanned for codes? The issue may be related to the valve body, stepper motor or pressure control solenoid, but the whining makes me concerned the issue may be internal. Did you use OEM CVT fluid?Thanks,Matt Johnson

Dan,Given the noise and the metal content, it really sounds like a bearing is failing. When the bearing starts shedding metal, that often causes scoring on the pump flow control valve which in turn causes a lack of proper ratio change. Unfortunately, I think the unit will likely have to come out and be rebuilt.Thanks,Matt Johnson
