I recently drained and filled Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) for my Mazda 2012 CX-9 AWD. Note - I did only drain and fill and NOT total flush. I created video using some of the footage I captured during process. This video is for informative purpose only and I am not responsible, if there is any damage caused while following this video. Be careful !!

If you remove the air filter cabin, you can work with filling plug easily. According the dealer; 1- drain all fluid from transmission. 2- fill the transmission with 4,5 qt new fluid. 3- start the engine then while pressing the brake pedal, move the gear on all of modes. Make sure you make it twice or 3 times and wait on each mode about 5-10 sec. 4- Drive the car about 5 min with all gears. 5- park your car and open the drain plug and take overfilled out. 6- close the drain plug then you are ready. you do not need to measure how much fluid take it out. If old owner overfilled the transmission, you will overfill it. that's why that transmission has level adjustment plug. If your drain plug is rusted, you should replace it with brand new one otherwise, it will be slipped. Drain plug+rubber oring+level adjustment plug+washer = ~$46 at dealer.

Do you happen to have the Mazda part# for those components you mentioned? I'm looking at a Mazda parts website, and it's nearly impossible to find those. Took forever just to find the Drain Plug # AW0119857, and it's not even showing the others as related parts. Thx!

I just did this a few days ago and would like to share some tips. My 2015 has approximately 50,000 miles and I used Valvoline Max-Life. 1) I decided to take out the airbox first. There are two bolts underneath the airbox that are a pain to get out/back in. It will take a while. A 1/4 rachet and socket will just fit. Be prepared to have your hands scraped up if you don't use gloves. 2) I thought I could get the fill plug out easier with the airbox removed; however, there is not enough space to really get enough leverage to loosen it. As you can see from the video, it's on very tight. I almost completely stripped it. I ended up putting a few extensions together where I could get a good push behind the ratchet and it finally budged. The fill bolt itself is at about a 20 degree angle towards the front of the car so keep that in mind. In all, the airbox made it easier to fill the transmission but i still needed the extensions to get the plug loose. I also didn't have to magnetize the socket or worry about losing the fill plug. There are advantages/disadvantages to either method. 3) When draining the fluid, remove the level plug and let the fluid run out. Then slightly loosen the drain plug with the hex socket. Put the level plug back into the drain plug and hand remove the drain plug. This will prevent fluid from constantly draining out of the hole and down your arm as you remove the drain plug. This, in turn, will allow you to more accurately measure the volume that was removed since the fluid won't be going everywhere. 4) To measure the fluid removed, pour it into a gallon ice tea, kool-aid, etc pitcher. It has volume markings on the side and the opening is obviously wider than an old motor oil container so less chance of tipping over and spilling. 5) When filling the transmission, I highly recommend a measuring funnel like the FloTool Measu-Funnel. It has volume measurements on the side and a twist valve to control the rate of flow of new fluid into the transmission. My CX-9 shifts silky smooth now. I highly recommend doing it. Hope this helps.

Ok, I think you answered my question in the last paragraph. I assume you were doing this because you had the really hard downshift from 5 to 4th gear? I have a 2011, and a year or two ago it developed the well known and dreaded hard shift. The dealership tells you that replacement is the only option ($1000) because there is no update to flash the TCM with.

Prasad, I really enjoyed your video and did a drain and refill on my own 2013 CX9. It is a 3.7 liter Front wheel drive (not AWD) the first refill went well with exactly 50ml added to what came out but on the second refill I left the small drain plug out and lost some fluid coming out over the fill tube. I wonder if you know how much fluid should be in the transmission above the fill tube so I might be able to partially drain down to the fill tube level and refill again to make sure I have not over filled. Looking forward to your reply, and thank for making such a useful presentation.

Thanks for the video; this is helpful. I am about to change my transmission oil. Quick question: is there a reason on why you are using a 1/2 ratchet and another 3/8 ratchet? Could this be done with only 1 ratchet as long as the sockets and extension are same measure? Thanks in advance for your clarification!

@reallifeengineer7214
@reallifeengineer7214 Жыл бұрын
Based on some diagrams in a Mazda parts catalog, yes that's the side panel cover that needs to be removed, IF you want access to the strainer. (They don't call it filter) Assuming it's a wire mesh strainer, then that does not need to be changed; such a wire mesh does not really get plugged up. Not like a cylindrical substrate-based filter.

Thanks for putting together this great video. Two questions; First, since there is a separate fill plug, is it necessary to measure the fluid removed and then put in the exact amount back in to ensure the correct level? Why not just fill till the level plug overflows? Second, does the transmission pan come off on this transmission to allow access to the filter? I just bought a 2011 CX-9 with ~100K on it and I doubt the tranny was ever serviced. I was planning on doing a full flush with new filter if possible so I'd like to know if you can actually get to the filter with this transmission. From what I'm reading, it seems the "sealed" transmission is just like the previous model unsealed version with the dipstick removed. Thanks
@KainOfNosgoth
@KainOfNosgoth 6 жыл бұрын
till the level plug overflows? So, when you drain your engine oil, do you fill it till it overflows?? No, you don’t fill till it overflows, you fill with the same volume that was drained. The transmission is sensitive when it comes to the fluid level, even to the extent that you need to make sure the temp of the drained fluid is the same temp of the new filled fluid so the volume of each would match. Second, there is no filter.
@ejcr032
@ejcr032 6 жыл бұрын
Okay. Thanks for the reply. When I change manual transmission oil or diff oil, I do fill it till it overflows. That's what the overflow plug is for. Obviously automatic transmissions aren't typically done that way but there is an overflow plug in this case and not a dipstick. It's not silly to assume the overflow plug is there for a reason. If I accidentally knocked over the container I'm using to measure the old fluid taken out what would you do then? If the previous owner put in too much or too little what would you do then?
@KainOfNosgoth
@KainOfNosgoth 6 жыл бұрын
It is not silly to overfill the differential, but for me, this is the exception to the rule of the fill plug. The rule is to fill without overflowing, must fill to car's specs. Just make sure that you will not knock over the container. If you do, then use your judgment to fill the car according to what was spilled, or take it to the dealership. Another option is to construct a dip stick, which I'm not sure how to do that. As for a previous owner that didn't do the fill up the level, I would say to continue the process as usual "fill using the same amount of drained fluid" since the car was functioning well and there was no transmission issue. This assumes that the previous owner didn't overfill. There is a slim chance that the transmission fluid was changed by the previous owners themselves, but rather done at the dealership, or maybe never done at all.
@AnthonyAwada
@AnthonyAwada 6 жыл бұрын
Jason you are correct, the overfill plug is there for you to continue filling fluid until it comes out of that plug. VW have had there AT use this system for many years. Nosgoth, the overflow plug is meant to empty all the overflow of fluid you pour in. If you pour too much, the overflow drain plug will just dump it back out, meaning you never overfill it. Beats the hell out of crappy dispticks that can be tempermental at times.

If you guys do it like that it might seem right but what about the filter? Have you ever changed it? Do you think it's working fine? Not at all, to do the proper transmission fluid change you're forced to take down the transmission and replace the filter (depending if the filter it's too dirty already)

I hope that the quality of the remaining oil is good. The important thing is to drive the car quietly for more than 500 km to at least 1000 km. The important thing is to make the gearshifts smooth and at a low rpm, so you can survive the transmission and change it as soon as possible and restore the cleanliness of the transmission. OMG! THANK YOU for this! I've being wondering if anyone had done that yet on exactly this model year's CX9. I've being turned down by 2 Mazda dealers and an independent garage so far. All citing "sealed transmission". Went under the car to take a look at the transmission housing today. (Before this video). I was even ready to just drop the entire transmission pan... to find there is NO transmission pan. (damn) Saw a bunch of bolts, but all looked strange and didn't seem like drain plug. With this video though, I know for sure which bolt it is now. Question: Did you consider removing the battery for easier access to the fill plug?
@kulkarnipb
@kulkarnipb Жыл бұрын
I did not remove the battery or considered it for that reason. However, probably removing the battery would have been a better idea to get more easy space to work with the fill plug. If you are trying DIY then I will suggest trying removing battery or nearby other housing to get more access to the fill plug.
@reallifeengineer7214

@@kulkarnipb Tried accessing the fill hole plug today. The fill plug is angled forward slightly towards the front of the car. Air box is situated towards the front of the car from where the fill plug is. So, removing air box makes more sense. BUT, in practice, the best I got to, was “loosening” the airbox. Top half was entirely moved out of the way. But bottom half has a bolt UNDER the airbox that ties it to the frame. Even when I managed to ninja-maneuver my hand with a wrench or ratchet onto the bolt, I just did not have enough space sideways to even turn the handle. At least with the airbox loosened, it indeed was easier to angle the 18” extension in a way that fully meets the torex bolt. Took a lot of strength to crack open the plug. For a moment I though I was gonna break the 3/8-drive extension. Now I know I can open the fill plug, rest of the task can proceed. Got 7 bottles of the ATF. Awaiting the O-ring that goes on the level plug; two of that on order, arrives in 2 days. (Without having a new o-ring in hand, I don’t want to risk opening up those level/drain plugs…) When all parts arrive and I get on with the real task, I might still remove the battery, so can reach and wipe-clean the fill plug area. I don’t want to knock dirt into the fill hole when trying to snake the funnel/tube into that hole.

Adding to this message thread, so it's easy for folks to find info. (I'm too lazy to film/edit a video on this 😅) The bottom half of the air filter box is likely held down by 3 snap-in bushings. The bolt I saw, but could not turn, is a mounting bolt that secures the bushing bracket to the frame. Simply wiggling and yanking out (forcefully) the bottom half of the air box, "should" be able to pull it out entirely. This is assuming Mazda used same approach between CX9 and CX7. See this video from "Auto Repair Guys" on a CX7 as reference: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gKdkh8Wp3JnTn58.html Highly recommend to do it this way. We'd have far easier access to the Torex 55 bolt for the transmission, as well as able to clean that area before opening that bolt. (So dirt doesn't fall into the transmission cavity when attempting to refill fluid.) Good time to change engine air filter too.

@@kulkarnipb Wanted to say THANK YOU again for this wonderful video. Successfully changed out 3 quarts and 8 fl oz of ATF today. Couple of tips for folks: Since this is supposedly a sealed lifetime transmission, Mazda does not have torque spec on any of these 3 bolts. So when you remove them, you really need to pay attention how much force you used to loosen each bolt --> That's how you'll judge how hard to torque them back later. The top side (fill plug) is the hardest to crack open. Just comparing by hand-feel: I routinely torque my wheel lug nuts to 80 ft lbs. That top side torex 55 felt like in the 100~120 range, possibly more. Used a breaker bar and a pipe; roughly 3 ft radius, and it was still tough. Folks really need to be holding down the extension bar, HARD, so the torex tip does not strip. When putting it back, I did not dare to really torque that high, and applied what I felt was in the 50~60 ft lbs range. The level plug is REALLY easy to torque off; regular rachet would do it easily. The drain plug is slightly harder than level plug to torque off. I had both a breaker bar and a pipe --> radius is roughly 2~2.5 ft. With that much leverage, it was an "easy crack" to loosen the bolt. Anyone that want to replace the O-ring on the level plug/bolt, for 2012 CX9 the part number is 19-852. You're best off to call your dealer's parts dept, and give them your VIN; that way they really get you the correct O-ring. My o-ring came out looking in really good condition, so I ended up not replacing it. Saved the new o-ring for the next ATF change, in case I need it.
