That is also the reason Japan is the main competitor of NUSA and worlds largest economy while China plays a smaller role and is more isolated internally.

Ever heard of a "Rough Guide to the U.K."? This was a sourcebook for the Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop RPG. It was published in 1994 but kind of predicts Brexit.

As ugly as it is, nuclear energy best, despite what people think, nuclear waste gets safely stored and reused efficiently. Stories of waste being improperly disposed of I seen were waste from toxic waste from chemical plants.

I think Europe still looks better than most places in the world, and poorer countries like Poland would certainly be used as Industrial breeding grounds, since labor would be cheaper than in other countries in Europe...or, we can just assume that with the Rabids Virus and the Data Krash of 2023, and of course, the 4th corporate war destroying lots of places across the world...they had some problems getting back on their feet.

While they are said to have universal health care, you meet a large number of ex-Union Scavengers that are adept at surgery/chemistry/other medical skills (why do such specialists want to escape the country and choose to become criminals in the NUSA?) Also, their government has resorted to having an AI run the economy to fix extreme pollution and shortages of basic goods.

As of 2020, this was true. The U.S. and the U.K. got the worst treatment in Cyberpunk lore. The only societies which fared worse where those places completely wiped out, like much of the Middle East and Hong Kong. The U.S.S.R. was still around in 2020 and allying itself with Europe. After 2020, the state of most of the world outside of Night City is vague. The sources simply haven't explored those parts of the globe yet. In 2045+ onward, we know that two of the biggest ten Megacorporations are headquarters in the U.S.S.R., SovOil and Zarfara. So, it has that going for it economically. On the other hand, the Soviets are still burning fossil fuel provided by SovOil, whereas the rest of the world has moved onto cleaner and more reliable fuel sources like CHOO2 (which is a biodiesel). At least in the energy technology, the Soviets are generations behind the West. Advance that another three decades into 2077, and the state of Asian countries becomes even more murky. Zarafa is probably still around and making robots for security and construction, I'm guessing. I don't see any mention of SovOil in 2077.

That's actually pretty smart and future socialist societies will probably follow the same model, humans cannot predict anywhere NEAR as well as an artificial intelligence could and when you have a planned economy predicting the future becomes more and more important.

@@PopPopPopPop ​ It's not a bad thing per se (at least from our world's perspective), but the Neosoviets resorting to it is a showcase of how incompetent their government has become. In Cyberpunk, truly sentient AIs are some of the most dangerous entities around (we get a glimpse of that with Alt), so placing one in charge of a whole state's economy could be seen as a desperate measure.

The 2020 setting was written a long time ago in real life. Europe, or rather the EU, is now seen a more and more neo-liberal, with several scandals of lobbying (corpo influence one can say). Rewritting this part is just an update with the modern critics. I think CP 2077 acknowledge the 2020 situation and justifies the drastic turn with the corporate wars and faillure of several governments.

@@arthrogeddon928 interesting take, Europe is seen more or less declining (incredibly sluggish growth, falling academic perfomance continent wide, and the rapid-militarization due to the ukraine war). Although 50 years and no real disasters (until 2077) is an impressive mark, especially for the cyberpunk timeline. So CDPR need to add some stuff to spice things up
