I had a few requests to do another comparison video, thought I'd put one together! Can we get to 700 Subscribers??
Cyberpunk Overdrive was supposed to be a technical preview, but it CAN run at 60fps with DLSS 3 and frame generation turned on. There is a lot to love about the new ray tracing (or, path tracing) mode in Cyberpunk 2077. The light is reflected and rendered in real time, so when there is a wall getting hit with light, that light will now bounce back into the environment. It also adds shadows to every light source, making the objects feel much more grounded to the earth. What else do you see that is different??

One of the best comparison videos. Most people seem to focus on opening scenes where the difference is minimal because these areas obviously received the most attention from devs and they are already well lit. Random corners is where we should look for differences!

Almost half of the frames drop with PT. But for what? Just that the game looks 5% better? Even with this monster card you still need DLSS to keep it playable. Absolutely pathetic. This is a shooter and fast paced game. Anyone who has time to judge shadows and borders on hair and corners is doing something wrong. I'm playing the game on 4k Ultra without DLSS with frames around 60-70fps.

@@Alex-us3pz well, I like it better with the new ray tracing, but it's raw in the sense that the picture is too grainy, and you have to wait until the light becomes perfect, otherwise my 4070 is enough for me to play without feeling any lags. Well, I often just drive around the city in search of activities, and just watch the beauties, I agree that maybe it’s not worth the performance costs, but why not if there is an opportunity. Also, with the usual tracing game gets better, and not only on 5%

I'm not a fan of ray tracing because if you don't have a top tier GPU you're unable to run it, and even when you have a beast GPU like RTX 3090 or 4090 the game is barely playable, but in this case the game almost looks like a new gen game with path tracing, that's why most games should implement path tracing instead of normal ray tracing, the difference is huge, the ray tracing had a colossal hype because of Nvidia propaganda when the most part of the advertisement they made was made using path tracing instead of ray tracing, that's why when ray tracing became to games everyone got disappointed by it.

When u don't know what path tracing is you don't find the places where the light actually makes the game looks totally different.

Path tracing completely overhauls the look of the game in literally any location in the game. It's blindingly beautiful with wide skyline shots of the city actually.

Kinda crazy how the RT ON can look a bit worse than RT OFF, because it seems to just totally omit any kind of ambient occlusion going on, causing things to glow worse in places they shouldn't have much or any light. Then of course RT OD just combines the best of both ON/OFF and then some more with proper shadows from all light sources and the RT reflectionz.

Way too contrasted and then flattened in other areas. For example, the poster was completely flat. The scene in the tunnel the road was completely blackened. The guy at the counter became dark and fuzzy.

@@WeisserAllan I was referring to the non-path-traced non-'overdrive' 'classic' raytracing that CP2077 has, the original raytracing that's been in there for a long time. The reason it looks worse is because it doesn't include any kind of ambient occlusion whereas the non-RT pure-rasterization mode uses the cheap screen-space ambient occlusion, which looks better than zero AO. The path-tracing doesn't need any screen-space AO because it's actually calculating AO properly, in world-space, against all illumination sources in a scene. But between the rasterized and original/classic RT modes, the lack of any kind of ambient occlusion on there leaves a lot of things looking like they're floating when compared to pure rasterization. The new path-traced mode certainly looks better than both the rasterized and classic RT modes.

Cool vid. A much better example at the 5:50 mark is not the centre of the image, but the right hand side. With OD, the light bleed is gone on the outcrop which now casts a proper shadow on the wall, as do the garbage bags. Everything fits into that scene much better. Same in the 6:13 comparison, the bar area, especially shelves and under the bar where the metal foot rest is reflecting light better.

Looking forward to the day when pathtracing is the standard lighting model for games. The difference is night and day; you think rasterized lighting looks really good until you see what true physically correct lighting looks like.

The differences are striking. The lighting precision in the OD mode is simply breathtaking and a huge step up over the first RT implementation. Also, looking at it live is even more striking! KZfaq + each individual's screen can change perceptions dramatically. Seeing it on an OLED LG C2 is just great!

@@eightleafgaming and a 4090 too or the GI calculations take quite a bit, making the image look very blurry. I play with a 4070, and on Overdrive mode, all the characters looked super cartoony and some of the reflections were glittering and wobbling all over the place.

It's night and day at times. Great examples of how it creates an internally consistent naturalism and impact. Kind of annoying to see them finally making their graphics engage sing like a superstar only to know that they're throwing it out the window soon for UE5 (which is also phenomenal, but it seems like such a waste to delete these results)

It's possible that they are just using UE5 for their next game while continuing to develop their own proprietary engine and work out the kinks they've discovered developing Cyberpunk 2077. It's kind of like SquareEnix using UE4 to develop FF7 remake but still developing their own engine as well.

They'll only use what they've learned to create something 2x as impressive with UE5. Remember, they're working closely with Nvidia *and* Epic.

Getting this engine to be competitive with UE5 and then UE6 at some point will become more and more difficult with huge ambitious games like this. I personally would rather have a more polished and maybe even sooner launch if that's what UE can provide. Expectations are always rising and outsourcing the ever growing technical department to another company which specializes at it makes sense.

First playthrough was on RT Psycho. Switched to RT OD on the 2nd playthrough and it sets such a different mood.

by the time we get to the 60 series cards we might have this much power with the 6060 or 6070, right now 4090 is on a league of it's own at a 1800-2000 price.

It's also because it already had some of the best RT implementations around, so improvement of overdrive can be subtle at times vs the regular RT modes.

If I had to describe it in one word I would say that everything looks so much more grounded in the world with OD on. That NPC at 3:10 is the perfect example for this. He has so much more depth.

Since I will never use RT and DLSS and FG and FSR just as little as 2K and 4K and everything that is more than 60 FPS, it is nice to see the comparison but I would switch off the flashing sign at the back at 0:28, which is known to me as the bloom effect or overexposure effect, which I do not particularly like. In addition, the performance is more important to me than the quality as long as it is within limits. I only play in 20 to 30 FPS depending on the game 720P minimum max only 1080P 60 FPS I won't go beyond that, at least not in the next few years

mixed for me, some scenes RT off look best and vice versa. not worth the performance loss imho. until we get games built from the ground up with path tracing in mind I think this will be the case.

That is wonderfull how RTX 4090 at 350W heating less than intel 13900 CPU at 120w. The heating does not displayed here, but I can say it by my own experience.

OD at times I feel can make things look worse. Some lighting effects get a like Bloom look to them which makes them look like a mini sun.

I've noticed the dynamic range seems to shrink a lot too. when you're in dark areas and look into the light, the light is super over exposed

When I'm looking at the first examples, something comes to mind I didn't consider yet. Aren't some fog effects in games voxel based, shouldn't that allow, if used, to get some good depth information. I wonder how taxing that would be for RT OD or if that still has to be faked to be doable.

Overdrive looks like RTX most people (including me) expected. I have a 3060 and I didn't really try it anywhere yet, except Fortnite (not the best game to do it, obviously). I am yet to play Cyberpunk 2077 and it makes me sad I won't be able to play with RTX OD on. P.S. I see you are a fellow STi enjoyer 🍻

I have a 3080ti and I can’t play with OD I beat the game on max setting with RT had to use DLSS on quality. I could use performance mode but I don’t really like to use that.

Hi, I saw video someone playing Cyberpunk OD on RT 3060 with reduced graphic and very solid framerates. No idea if it was acceptable only becouse of YT compresion. I was definately supriced to see it running 45FPS+. True it was day time in car thus less demanding part of the game

I'd check out Metro Exodus: Enhanced edition. They have a very similar method to lighting by path-tracing their light simulation, it'd run splendidly on your 3060 and you can expect visual quality similar to this. It's a great game to boot.

The difference is striking, especially when you play it. It looks like cutscenes we all dreamt about from PS3 E3 trailers. But some characters still look unrealistic in terms of faces, and it breaks the immersion. Also stiff animations are not on par with graphics

Overdrive looks nice for the environment, but it always gives you alot of splotchy fluttery moving parts around the image. The whole impression is not very calm and crisp. As much as I like the more realistic feel of the lighting, I still prefer the Psycho Raytrace mode over it because that one gives you a very calm and exact image, especially characters look alot better since there is no interpolation from the GI on them. With the Overdrive mode, the characters all look very cartoony since the RTGI calculation seems to have trouble with it.

It's such a mundane scene but 2:30 RTX off vs Overdrive really encapsulates the stereotypical flat videogame look vs something that looks way more realistic.

RT OD washes out some of the textures. When looking at npc’s faces they look blurry with it on. You can see the garage door at 5:27 and the comparison on the npc’s faces in the last example. Some scenes are way to dark as well. For those reasons and a 30-40% drop in fps I turned it off. Other than that I do like the shadow and lighting effects. With some work an optimization I think it can be really good.

Washing out happens because the ultra expensive calculations arent done every pixel, hence the denoise algorithms working to rebuild the image sewing the calculated pixels together. The true occlusion it brings is pretty amazing, but im not sold on the noisy results, means horsepower is not here yet.

Not going to happen. R7 3700 + Radeon 6600 XT(consoles hardware) would't provide even 20 fps@1080p FSR on.

@@Unreal-Noob Consoles are actually weaker than that, you have to remember they arrive outdated, the PS5 uses technology from 2019, which means it's GPU is roughly the equivalent of a RTX 2070 (if not weaker). The fact they can run games at super sampled 4k with basic ray tracing at 30fps, that is impressive considering how shitty and badly optimized this "nextgen" is looking thus far

@@RRRRRRRRR33 The PS5 is equivalent to RTX 3070 without DLSS, but with FSR 3 it will be a game changer that will double the number of fps and will allow to use more visual effects, not as good as path tracing but better than today for sure

@@oceanedetotes Naah, the PS5 was built/conceptualized before the 3070 was a thing, they were released in the same time period, but the PS5 has a 2070 at best. It's always like this in the PC market, the scheduled obsolescence: the PS4 had the equivalent of a GTX 750, it was really weak, however, if you want to play God of War or Horizon Zero Dawn in 1080p at "original" settings you need a GTX 1060, the PC is always deprecated by force, the market forces us to buy current hardware to play software from 2 years ago (3, 4 years, etc.. and so on). I assumed the RTX 6700 XT would be enough to sustain this PS5 generation, but looking at the state of the market (even that Star Wars Jedi game arrived busted with optimization problems) maybe the industry want us to buy a even stronger hardware... imagine that? You will need the equivalent of a RTX 5070 to play games who were originally designed to run on a RTX 2070, lol that's preposterous

I mean of course path tracing looks fantastic. Especially the realistic shadows and light reflections. It's like night and day compared to the scenes without any raytracing. But with the framerate drop it will take many many years to be playable in games for people. Not everyone has a 4090 and even that is the barely minimum. Even my 4080 is to slow for that. My framerates aren't getting even near the 60fps with path tracing. That's for sure not a smooth gameplay. The rest of my system is like in this video but with faster RAMs. For consoles there is no chance to be implemented with their hardware specs. It's an interesting technology for the future. But for now it's only looking good in videos.

Yeah basically videos only at this point. The 4090 only gets like 20 fps in 4k native haha, DLSS is doing all the work right now.

5:47 Notice the contact shadow of the green building with the sidewalk. OD - there is no shadow at all, the building seems to be floating. RT - a shadow only on the building itself, but not under it and on the sidewalk. And only without RT the shadow is displayed realistically. The technology is only at the beginning of its journey, there are still some flaws. But so far I like what I see. Thanks for the great comparison!

Except there is a small shadow in that corner which makes sense since there's a white light above there. What doesn't make sense is the thick SSAO corner in both non Overdrive scenes... 🤔

RT is a real disapointment. Most of the time i cant even tell if it is aktivated in CP and i actually think to turn it of looks slightly better. HDR maks a big diffrence though.

The light effects are very good, but the animation of the people and the ground details on the bottles and cups still look CG-like. The light sources are good, but the low quality of the objects themselves is a bottleneck, and the overall look is poor. However, as I said before, the expression of light, such as divine rays and sunlight shadows, is beautiful. If this were done in GTA5, it would be indistinguishable from live action, which is a bit of a waste.

It's dark because there are shadows being cast in areas that typically video games don't have shadows due to limitations in rasterization.

OD its the true RT, the other one looks like an early stage feature that they released early so they can sell that gimmick.

that's exactly what it is, regular RT utilizes some real RT technology but mostly simulated effects while OD actually calculates light bounces up to 2 times within certain draw distance. Just imagine in another 10 years, where GPUs are powerful enough to handle light bouncing something like 5 times with a greater draw distance

the only thing that annoys me when playing is overexposure when leaving the room, it hits the eyes so hard =( I mean that in some moments there is not enough correct setting of light and shadow, because of which sometimes it is too dark and in a moment you are already blind

Like Deadpool would say, this overdrive thing is "too dark"! Jokes aside, it kinda looks more realistic I guess, but it does not justify the loss of 50% performance, not at all. Not so long ago when tessellation was the visual gimmick, I think that had more superficial impact tbh, how the textures improved dramatically. Shading and lighting are subjective, it all depends on the artstyle and so on... but for me, a realistic texture of cloth or something of the kind, it really grabbed my attention, textures in general, animations, AI, etc.. the videogame industry should focus on those instead of global illumination imo

@@eightleafgaming Lighting plays a role, but if you look at the most advanced games from the PS4 generation, Red Dead 2 and Last of Us 2, they are all about textures and animation. If the characters in Red Dead didn't looked "real" enough, it becomes harder to be hooked by the story

RT Overdrive is still far from perfect. We need a few orders of magnitude of performance to make it really great. It is still not much different at a distance, you can actually see the local area of affect that it mostly applies to as you move around. But it does make the world much more comfortable to play in...less distraction from things that seem to float without a shadow. Now its got shadows, but the shadows are artifacting and/or blur in and out in unnatural ways. But it still feels more acceptable, especially when performance is good. I doubt I can go back.

@@TheHalo14aus Yeah, it is a preview, but still a pretty impressive one. I didn't mean to imply the problem is with RT Overdrive. I guess the issue I am raising is that the hardware just isn't there yet, we need multiple orders of magnitude more, and that isn't a couple of cards in the future, its 30-40 years (and I think I am being optimistic). But it will be pretty good by then for native 4K I think. Should be pretty great in 50 years. We are right near the bottom, so ray/path tracing is going to be pretty average for a while. But every 5 years or so (~2 generations) we will see a pretty substantial improvement. Even more so in the coming 5 or so generations. I do love it though and we do have to push hard to get there as fast as we can. Path tracing is the future, and its available now in preview. But I still prefer it over rasterizing - I just don't think rasterizing with ray tracing adds enough for the performance hit, where I think we just need to push over to Path tracing ASAP. Backwards compatibility with older hardware is our problem for a while. AMD needs to get their finger our on RT hardware. They need to bring out something that trounces nVidia 😬

As for me this is cheating people. More bloom and fog when RT On? Fog is very slow with real raytracing. Maybe lets talk how badly implemented is rasterization in this game, a specially shadows? Raytracing is maybe easier for developers, but there is so many years after game release and no other game with overdrive effect. Is there any other game with overdrive? There were games with overdrive - but effect was opposite, a specially when rasterization lighting was in much better state.
