Hi Mark, I would have to say that this journey is right up there and I still think about it today. It's a tough ride to do but every view seems get better than the previous one. I was luck with weather and would love to do it again with a group. I also think it should be done over 10 days where you give yourself more time to absorb the scenery. Thanks for the comments.

Small world and all that, Mr DazP. I have been researching the NC500 with a view to doing it myself next year. spineshankdude Thanks for the comments, it was an amazing adventure and something I really enjoyed doing but also one of the toughest things I have ever undertaken Can I ask if you had a "Moment " between Bettyhill and Thurso because I did with the head wind. I edited it out but almost lost the plot ..lol. I will put more footage up in a play list on my channel - descents and outtakes etc.
@AllenBoardman
@AllenBoardman 6 жыл бұрын
Yep, I did, at Dunnet head was when I had the "moment" I actually couldn't get out of third gear and the granny ring because it was so so windy! I absolutely hated the Golspie - Inverness leg - even though all the vehicles on the A9 where good with me, I just didn't want to be on it any more! Your mileage was similar to what I done too. The climb on the A99 after the switchbacks past the graveyard up high on the left and the nice bay with the house on the left too where you are being followed by the support was a bloody great climb! I loved that one. I guess up to Betty Hill was my favourite part of the ride, I loved being in the middle of nowhere! Did you see the house on the left maybe 10 miles before you see the Ullapool sign? It was a scary shell of a house, with an upstairs you couldn't get to without a ladder, no windows, except the skylight which was a fresh installation and also double glazed!!
@MrDazP1adv3ntures
@MrDazP1adv3ntures 6 жыл бұрын
spineshankdude There were a lot of properties being renovated I noticed. Stopped near Ullapool at a private Bunk house near Braemore so must have seen it? Yes I agree about the middle of nowhere stuff too. Following the valley down to Durness with Cape wrath on the left and also the amazing Loch Eribol. The leg from Thurso to Wick was really hard with the wind but as soon as I tracked sw boy oh boy did the pace pick up.
@AllenBoardman
@AllenBoardman 6 жыл бұрын
I wasn't so lucky with the weather regarding the wind really....I had an amazing tail wind during the first 60 miles, managed an average of 18 mph! then after that was a head wind that greeted me around every corner! I'd do it again for sure! I loved every second of the western coast!

Hey dude. You inspired me to start gold panning. I've been traveling round the UK on my bicycle for 8 years working when needed as a chef and living oh natural setting up camps in nice locations. Been getting real fed up with working my arse off for nothing. Started watching your channel a few months ago. You inspired me to work less and start panning for gold. I've been panning unknown streams an rivers in Cornwall. Plenty of colour. Next year I'm going to start doing gold panning experience days for tourists. Just looking for somewhere I can set up a bell tent for a more permanent base. Starting my you tube channel very soon with a review of the Garret supper sluice kit. And panning vids to follow. Love cycling too bro. Happy panning. Planning a panning trip to the forest of dean next year maybe see you there.

Yes, but I’ll need quite a bit of time. So it’s a long way off. I watched in stages. I’ve visited the area car camping in 2009 it is wild and lovely. I think it’s more climbing per mile than the LEJOG or JOGLE and it’s intimidating. Just planned a cycle camping trip for next year; Heysham to Glenridding. Glenridding to Wray Castle. (Via St Johns in the vale, Grasmere) Wray Castle to Heysham. Mid summer planning to do a different C2C.

Fix the "relive"parts = its all over the place - it is showing you going east (left to right) when you are going west and south when you are going east. example glen carron section the map shows you going south when you are going west and the car footage shows you going north link the directions - when north is up it is easier to follow
@MrDazP1adv3ntures

Just watched it and I am at a loss as what you are referring to.The relive parts are spot on. The orientation is fine. It gives an excellent overview of the course travelled . I can't fix it because it's already been edited and uploaded. You just brought back a memory of maps written with the words upside down aimed at helping people who struggle to navigate and orientate maps, A to Z of the UK North to South version, but any extra dimensional inserts from platforms such as Relive really do help tell the story . Perhaps it's just me but it looks ok .

Hi There, We now have many my more riding around the five hundred and living on a bit of single track road that is a popular part of the tour I wonder what cyclist think about cars using the same roads. In the past I have driven slowly behind cyclists expecting once they are aware of me behind they would happy to allow me to overtake safely. Now I am told they no longer need to worry as legally they have the right to cycle up the middle of the track and do not need to bother to pull into passing places. I have always tooted a single toot well back from the cyclist and a louder one if it’s windy. Some cyclists raise a hand to tell me they know I am there and others give the finger. Personally I will continue giving a toot as I wear hearing aids in each ear and have to think the cyclist in his helmet would understand my actions. I understand observing the dreadful conditions of our single tracks with there eroded edges

First of all Lydia best of luck , this is an amazing experience and one which you will never forget. I did it in early April so there were no midges. A few days before this ride the Applecross pass was closed with snow so at one point the trip was on hold ! I have heard that Skin so soft is a good one to keep the blighters at bay but isn't sold as a repelent, it's just a moisturising cream. A word of advice though , keep your eyes on the tarmac - the road surfaces can be tough with lots of pick up and stones. I say this because every horizon has a better view than the previous one and you'll be looking at scenery constantly, it is breathtaking . Let me know how you got on. All the best Darren

Hi Chris. It's a very tough challenge on both your body and your bike but it's the absolutely breathtaking scenery that draws you in and makes it a proper adventure. JOGLE was different because you are never too far from somewhere. The NC 500 gives you that feeling of remoteness and feeling isolated, which isn't a bad thing. @MrDazP1adv3ntures
@MrDazP1adv3ntures 2 жыл бұрын
I wasn't as concerned on the NC500 about this in general. I have used a 4 digit combination steel wire lock on JOGLE and LEJOG which you can get from Halfords. They are a bit heavy but not too bad. Most places I stopped at over night let me keep the bike in either dedicated sheds or in closets. If not I tend to put the bike in a bush out of sight. As for shopping it's a case of taking the bike into the store if you can and asking the assistant if it is ok. Places like Lidl will let you put the bike inside whereas Tesco can be awkward. I had support on the 500 so kept the bike in the car and I also had a full cycling tool kit in the back with everything I would need just in case.

Hello Mathew and thanks for the comments and questions. I would be glad to help. First of all this is a truly fantastic journey and extremely tough for both the body and the bike. I did it over six days and I knew what my limits were from cycling long distances for many years and having the mindset to never give in. I guess it all comes down to how many miles you can ride comfortably and recover from each day. Only you will know what your limits are right now, but with some training you will get the benefits of getting fitter and gaining the confidence to challenge your self that bit more . I would look at the logistics of where there could be accommodation to fit in with your ride plan. i.e - if you planned 50 miles per day would it work out with places to stay give or take 10 miles either way. You may have to plan one big day to make it work out for you in the long run. If you have any specific questions please don't hesitate to ask and I will do my best to help. Cheers - Darren

Hello Tom, This is probably one of the greatest cycling trips the UK has to offer. The only other adventure that came near to it was the Way of the Roses in a day. But if you take on the NC 500 best of luck and be prepared to be in awe of the scenery. I stayed at the hostel just out side of Applecross on day 1 Hartfiled house hostel , Day 2 was the Forest way Bunk house, Day 3 was the Richonich hotel, Day 4 was the Park Hotel Thurso, Day 5 was the Golspie Inn. Hope this helps buddy, any advice just ask.

Living on a single track road that ends on at a nice beach I just wondered how we will get on with cyclist now? It seems the law is quite clear that cyclists can ride in the middle of the road if they wish to. What should be the procedure on our single tracks then. Formerly seeing a cyclist tackling our hills my habit was to toot my horn once, far enough behind just to let him know of my presence. Some cyclists raised their hand to acknowledge my single toot, some hastened to give me the finger. I was happy for either just knowing shelf the cyclist was aware. When a passing place appeared on the cyclists side I closed up expecting room to now pass safely. If the cyclist did not pull in my habit was to drop back and await his arrival at other passing on his left. After three failed attempts my toot was, shall we say more enquiring! This is now a no no as the cyclist could suggest I was assuming a right of way over his. Our single track started life as a cart track, it’s now the same cart track, but equipped with a disintegrating layer of tarmac and a limited selection of small passing places. It is occupied with motor homes a large part of the year driven mainly by drivers unused to such large vehicles. This leads to frustration unless they pull in to their passing places on the left to allow smaller vehicles to overtake simply because otherwise it starts to be a convoy. Two motor homes meeting with each both having convoys create chaos. Will we now have the same problems with cyclist who are often much slower than motor homes especial on our many steep hills? It is expected a motor home will pull in inside the passing places to keep traffic moving. The new laws seem make no account for cyclist to behave in this manner, so where do we go from here please???

Hello John, I totally appreciate your views on the matter. I guess we should always make our presence known with kindness and consideration to others and when the cyclists ignore you or they become abusive I guess it would be time to evoke the ' Up yours ' policy. The North Coast is one of them jewels in the British Isles, where it may well become a victim of it's own beauty and the locals will either suffer the consequences of tourist, campers and cyclists visiting or they may benefit from the income it generates at a local level. I too live in the countryside and often wonder how city folk manage to drive around the small idyllic lanes with their stereos blasting away as they speed past horses and drive through the tiny hamlets like it was dual carriageway . The world has changed and people live for the moment. They are inconsequential to their actions and care not about the environment.

Hi, they sometimes advise you to double wrap your handlebar tape for comfort. I use Pearl Izumi gloves usually but in June you shouldn't need full gloves. I can highly recommend Sealskin gloves from Halfords though about £40 and they work ok for me. I use them at the moment. It's always good to have micro layer glove to insert on very cold dry days. Some people also wear blue nitrile gloves underneath for wet cold days.

Hello Martin , thanks for the comments and watching the video. If you are going in May it could be warm so you might need a light weight body jacket with base layers. I use a great compact jacket from Decathlon which won't break the bank and does a good job. I would always think about Keeping your feet warm though with over shoes. No matter what, this ride is a tough one and the views will keep you going if the weather is good. Know your limits and keep your body fueled. Best of luck my friend.

I’m currently in the market for a hybrid (looking at the Giant Roam 0) but I’m also toying with the idea of a gravel bike with either flat or drop bars. Never owned a bike with drop bars. Would be interested in your thoughts and opinion on the two types of bike mentioned above. Hoping to make a decision and place my order next week. Maybe then I’ll contemplate the NC500 😉
@MrDazP1adv3ntures

Paul Rose It all comes down to the bike fit or how you feel with position it offers you. I love my flat bar hybrid because it is comfy and versatile. The bike you mentioned should be OK. Check what the gearing is too. Most gravel bikes tend to run a single chain ring nowadays so may be 1x11 , if you are touring you need to be mindful of the gear ratios and if it will take panniers. Raleigh do some descent gravel bikes. Hope this helps. Any advice just ask .

MrDazp1 thank you for your reply and advice. Much appreciated. I’m hoping to pop down to my local bike dealer early next week so I’ll try them out etc. I currently have a Specialized MTB which I’ll be keeping for when I want/need to do some heavy off-road but lately I’m tending to be heading out for ‘just a ride’ and doing a bit more road and cycle/dirt track riding. I’d like to start extending the distances traveled but don’t really fancy a dedicated road bike, at least not yet 😉 I was under the impression, rightly or wrongly, that a gravel bike would be more capable for off-road use than a hybrid. I’m not sure if that’s the case. Even if it is, I’m probably going to be using more on road than off. Confusing 😂
@MrDazP1adv3ntures
@MrDazP1adv3ntures 6 жыл бұрын
Paul Rose Yes you're right, if want a bike that offers you some off road ability and will be happy on the tarmac too then a gravel bike is the answer. They will also be a good all round winter bike. To be honest I got my hybrid because I fancied getting back out on the roads having mountain biked my self to death and the flat bars where the way to do it. I now have a couple of road bikes and oh boy they can shift. A bike also has to luck good too.....

MrDazp1 popped down to my local bike shop and had a chat. I’m leaning more towards the hybrid as I’ll be keeping my MTB. If I enjoy the road riding then I can maybe look at getting a road bike further down the line. I think the 2019 bikes are due out soon so I may wait until then. Thanks for your help and advice. I’m currently enjoying working my way through your videos. The MTB club looked like a great laugh 👍

Yes the mountain bike days were great. The 2019 bikes should be out Sept/Oct so you might get a good deal on a 2018 model. If you get a hybrid you won't be disappointed and then you can think what direction you want go in future .....road bike or gravel. Good luck and happy shopping.

If you went unsupported you might want to consider doing it over more days with shorter sections. Either way it is a very challenging ride which ever way you decide to take it on. I would advise doing 40 miles per day to take it all in though. It is out of this world.

I've done the NC 500 a few times in my campervan and it really is fantastic country, particularly the West coast. I've climbed nearly all of Scotland's Munros (2 to go) so know the country well. Being Scottish helps. I have to say that this was a tremendous achievement by bike. Some of the hills after Ullapool are fierce. Very well done indeed. @@MrDazP1adv3ntures
